Outside of the Classroom
Last month, I encouraged students to ask me for help even outside the classroom.
This month, I want to share some of the ways in which I already help some students
outside of the classroom.
ESS Club is a fun and relaxed atmosphere for practicing English. We talk about lots
of things. They help me understand Japanese culture and in return I tell them about
American culture. We also play word games like Scrabble, and games where we use
English to make funny sentences.
On a more serious note, I help the third years prepare for entrance exams. I help to
correct nearly all the practice essays that come through the English department. I also
spend a lot of time with students preparing for English interviews. They practice
speaking, and I help them to prepare thoughtful and meaningful answers to the typical
questions.
However, I don’t just help third year students. For students who study abroad, I help
them practice English before they leave and afterwards to keep their skills sharp.
Regular students come by with their friends for conversation practice when they have
time. Last year, I helped a student practice for a speech contest, and sometimes
students come to have me check their speeches before they present them in class.
As you can see, students come to me for a variety of purposes. Every student has
different needs, so I do a lot of different things. I really enjoy working with the students
outside of class, and I think they learn a lot from the experience.

先月私は、授業以外でどんどん私に助けを求めるよう生徒に呼びかけました。今月は、実際に
教室の外で私がどんなふうに生徒のお手伝いをしているのか少しご紹介したいと思います。
ESS では、愉しく、くつろいだ雰囲気で英語を練習しています。みんなでいろんなことを話
します。生徒は私が日本文化を理解できるよう助けてくれますし、私からはアメリカ文化につい
てお話します。また時には、Scrabble のような言葉遊びを楽しむゲームもしますし、英語でお
もしろい文を作るゲームなどもします。
学業面においては、3 年生の入試準備も手助けしています。英語科からまわってくる作文ほぼ
すべての添削をお手伝いするほか、かなりの時間を使って面接指導にも取り組んでいます。スピ
ーキング練習のなかで、よく問われる質問に対してどんなふうに答えたらより意味のある答えに
なるか生徒と一緒に考えていきます。
もちろん、私が指導しているのは 3 年生だけではありません。留学する生徒なら、行く前だ
けでなく、帰国後も英語力が落ちないように英語の練習につきあいます。特別な目的がない生徒
も時間のある時に友達と連れだって立ち寄っては、会話練習をしていきます。昨年は、スピーチ
コンテストに出る生徒の指導もお手伝いしました。授業の課題として出されたスピーチの原稿を
発表前にチェックして欲しいとやってくる生徒もいます。
このように、生徒はいろいろな目的をもって私のところにやってきます。生徒それぞれ、求め
るものがさまざまなので、私もいろいろなことをやることになります。こうして生徒と一緒に活
動することは本当に楽しいですし、生徒もこういう経験から多くのことを学んでいることと思い
ます。
