The attacks in Paris and Istanbul have shaken Europe to its
core. While stories of failed integration in places like the
Brussels borough of Molenbeek abound, there are also
stories of Muslim communities elsew here in Europe w here
radical Islamist view s have never gained foothold. What
are these communities doing right? What can civil society
do to help these communities flush out the poison of
radicalism? Is there a role for the European Union in
preventing radicalization?
Recently, in an effort to consolidate political pow er and to
maintain stability w ithin the country, the Turkish government
has enacted severe limitations on freedom of assembly and
freedom of expression, directly affecting the w ork of civil
society organizations and the media. How can civil society
organizations operate in such an environment? Where do
they see openings to advocate for change? How can
European institutions and organizations contribute to
strengthening civil society in Turkey?

At last w eek's Council meeting, British Prime Minister David
Cameron negotiated new conditions for the UK's
membership to the European Union and promptly scheduled
a referendum on EU membership for 23 June. In Britain the

ihre eigene Aufsichtsrolle erw eitern w ill. Künftig sollen
sämtliche zw ischenstaatliche Gasverträge vor

Klagerecht für EU-Bürger in Sachen
Datenschutz: US-Kongress bewilligt den
Judicial Redress Act
Im Rahmen der Aufklärung des Terroranschlages von San
Bernadino versucht das FBI auf das iPhone des Attentäters
zuzugreifen. Bei dem Attentat im Dezember 2015 w aren
insgesamt 14 Menschen getötet und 21 w eitere verletzt
w orden. Die Strafverfolger vermuten, dass sich auf dem
Diensthandy des Attentäters w ichtige Informationen
befinden. Doch Apple w eigert sich, dem FBI Zugang zum
iPhone zu verschaffen - nicht zuletzt, um die Privatsphäre
seiner Kunden zu schützen und die Schaffung eines
Präzedenzfalles zu verhindern.
In der vergangenen Woche bew illigte auch der US-Senat
die "Judicial Redress"-Gesetzesinitiative, nachdem das
Repräsentantenhaus bereits im Oktober 2015 den Entw urf
positiv beschieden hatte. Nun fehlt nur noch die
Unterschrift von Präsident Barack Obama. Der Judicial
Redress Act, übersetzt in etw a "Gesetz für gerichtliche
Wiedergutmachung", räumt Bürgern aus mit den USA
verbündeten Staaten ein Recht auf Rechtsbehelf ein.
Ausländern w ird es somit zukünftig möglich sein, gegen
US-Behörden zu klagen, w enn diese z.B. gegen
Datenschutzrichtlinien verstoßen.

The Arab Spring started in North Africa's smallest state, a
perennial tourist destination for sun-seeking Europeans,
Tunisia. Since the Tunisian dictator Ben-Ali fled the country
Tunis has become a beacon of hope in the aftermath of the
Arab Spring revolutions. Benefiting from a group of
Tunisian liberal politicians visiting FNF in Brussels, w e
invited stakeholders for an interactive discussion on the
future prospects of a Tunisia in transition. Their
conclusion? "Hardw are's in place, Softw are still under
construction."

Der Widerstand gegen die deutsche Asyl- und
Flüchtlingspolitik hat das Bündnis der Visegrad-Staaten
(Tschechien, Polen, Slow akei, Ungarn) zu neuem Leben
erw eckt. Lange Zeit galt die vor 25 Jahren gegründete
Allianz als tot, w eil die Interessenlage der vier
mittelosteuropäischen Länder in Bereichen w ie Energie
oder Landw irtschaft sehr unterschiedlich w ar. Vor allem
der Wahlsieg der nationalkonservativen Partei Recht und
Gerechtigkeit (PiS) im Oktober 2015 in Polen hat dem
Visegrad-Bündnis neuen Auftrieb und mehr Gew icht
innerhalb der EU verliehen.
