Registration of used vehicles
from the EU countries
 General information
Temporary stays
If you keep your normal residence from your Member State and you stay in Germany for less than 6
months, you do not have to register your car or pay any taxes here - it will remain registered in your
country of residence.
Stays over 6 months
If you move from another EU country to Germany and take your car with you, you have to register it in
Germany and have to pay the corresponding taxes. Registration must be made within 6 months.
Motor vehicles and their trailers must be accredited for participation in the public roads.
The car registration takes place in Hamburg by the State Office for transport (Landesbetrieb Verkehr
- LBV).
 Requirements


the main residence is in Hamburg
certificate of conformity - issued by the manufacturer - shows that the technical characteristics
of the vehicle meet safety and environmental standards. Can be either a European ( EC) or a
national certificate
 To register your car, you will have to submit the following documents:










valid identity card or passport in the original with the last registration card,
electronic insurance confirmation (please ask your insurance company),
proof of ownership (contract of purchase, bills)
previous foreign registration certificate
foreign registration plates, if the car still registered
certificate of conformity
valid certificate of roadworthiness testing (TÜV)
a power of attorney, if a representative makes the application himself (then the ID Card of the
representative and ID card copy of the vehicle owner is required),
for the payment of road tax a SEPA combi mandate for collection of motor vehicle tax by
direct debit
