Bekannte können Sie bedenkenlos mit einem “well done!” loben. “Congratulations!” und das Verb “congratulate” hingegen passen zu einem Lob jeder Förmlichkeitsstufe – da kommt es auf den Kontext an. Auch ein enthusiastischer Ausdruck kann angemessen sein, wenn jemand beispielsweise im letzten Moment die Lösung für ein schwieriges Problem findet oder eine wirklich außerordentliche Leistung vollbracht hat, zum Beispiel so: • • What a great idea! You just have to follow a few rules not to annoy someone or to break a cultural taboo. Insider tip from your British editor Maureen Brown The most important rules for business situations are: 1. Don’t pay someone a compliment on a bodily feature, e.g. his or her nose or feet. 2. Don’t compliment British men on their looks or clothing. 3. Don’t pay a man a compliment on his wife. You do have to be very careful not to be too familiar in the working environment. Apart from that you may and should consider paying compliments on the following features and qualities. Aussehen (looks) • That’s a nice shirt you’re wearing. Is it new? • I like/love your hairdo. • What a pretty dress! It really suits you. • You’re looking great/terrific today. Besitz (possessions) • I love this picture. • What a beautiful room! • What a fine briefcase! 2 Care should be taken at all times when giving compliments at work. You should use your discretion about when to make a compliment and take into account the situation (whether it is formal or social) and even more so the age of the person to whom you are directing the compliment. Older people may consider you too familiar. Tipp: Neither Americans nor the British consider compliments on possessions a taboo – contrary to many Germans. The best way to do that is to follow up your compliment with a question, e.g.: – That’s a nice shirt you’re wearing. Is it new? – What a beautiful couch!
