Happy New Year (and another baby!)
Happy New Year to
everyone connected
to TES. I probably
don’t tell you enough
how thankful I am
that you choose to
come to our school.
We hope that we can
continue to see you
all in 2015.
As you know, last
year saw daughters
being born to our exstaff members Nicole
and Sara, and the
third TES daughter of
2014 arrived on
December 19th. She
is the first child for
Yoko and I, and her
name is Mona. We
chose that name in
memory of my
mother, whose name
was Monica, but her
family all called her
Mona. The kanji for
the name was more
difficult to decide, but
after a lot of
searching by Yoko,
we came up with “萌
那”. Both Mona and
Yoko are doing very
well, and I am looking
forward to bringing
Mona in to see you
all, but probably when
the weather is better.
I’ll include some
photos of Mona with
this.
This month, we also
had 2 other, more
adult, new arrivals.
Heather Aplington
has arrived from
America to take over
from Sean, who is
now safely back in
Australia. Please
take some time to
talk to Heather and
make her feel
welcome, I think she
has been surprised
by all of the snow
that we have been
having! Also, while
Yoko is on maternity
leave, Mai Kumota is
here working in the
evenings. Welcome
to you both, I hope
you enjoy your time
here at TES.
Madoka will have the
usual events
information for the
upcoming few
months, including our
next TOEIC test date
here at TES. For
those of you who are
interested, TOEIC is
a great, and
challenging, way to
see how your English
is improving. If you
haven’t taken the test
before, why not give
it a try and challenge
yourself. If you have
taken it before, why
don’t you try to see
just how much your
English has
improved!
I’m sure I have much
more to tell you
about, but I’ve got
Mona on my mind, so
for the moment I will
leave it to everyone
else to give you all of
the information you
need.

Aplington 先生が 12 月から
TES のスタッフとして仲間入
りしました！Heather 先生は
アメリカ合衆国出身で、マーシ
ャ先生と同じオレゴン州の大学
にて日本語学科を卒業、在学中
には関西外国語大学にて留学の
経験もある、日本語の堪能な先
生です。もちろんレッスンは英
語で行いますが、分からなこと
などあれば、日本語で聞くこと
もできます。授業中はできるだ
け日本語を使わずレッスンを進
めていきたいと話していまし
た。私達と同じように、母国語
以外の学習経験がある彼女なら
ではのレッスンが期待できると
思います!
Hello everyone! I’m Heather! I’ve moved
all the way to Joetsu from Portland,
Oregon, USA! It’s always rainy back home
in Portland. I think it starts raining around
October and continues until June, so it
rains for about nine months. Our summer
is really nice, though. The temperature is
comfortable, the sun is always out, and
there’s always a pleasant breeze to keep
you cool. As much as I love the sun, all I
can remember about this time of the year
is the rain. That’s probably why I was so
surprised when I arrived in Joetsu on
December 6th when all the snow was
falling really hard! I’ve never lived in an
area with this much snow! I don’t even like
winter sports…! I guess I’ll just build little
snowmen everywhere.I’m going to do my
best here at TES! Don’t be afraid to come
to me if you have any questions!

初めまして！12 月に入社しました雲田真依です。出
身は妙高市です。趣味は旅行で学生時代に北はアラス
カ、南はニュージーランドまで様々な国を貧乏旅行し
てきました。スポーツはヨガとウォーキング、ランニ
ングが好きです。学生時代にはオーストラリアのメル
ボルンへ留学、社会人経験を経てからカナダ・バンク
ーバーでの就業経験など様々なところを転々としてき
ましたが、やっぱり地元が一番！と昨年生まれ故郷に
戻って参りました。
私の英語学習のきっかけは子どもの頃に NHK で放送
されていた海外ドラマの「フルハウス」を見ていて、
「いつか海外で生活してみたい！」と思ったのが始ま
りでした。それからご縁があり TES で働くようにな
りましたが、まだまだ自分の英語力不足を痛感する毎
日です。わたしも皆さんと目標に向かって頑張ってい
きたいと思いますので一緒に頑張っていきましょう！

にお越しいただき、ありがと
うございました。Sean 先生
の生徒さんからのご協力を得
て、素敵なサプライズビデオ
を先生にお見せすることもで
きましたことこの場を借りて
御礼申し上げます。また、こ
の機会に、Sean 先生のレッ
スンを引き継ぐべく、アメリ
カから来た Heather 先生、
そして陽子さんの産休に伴い
新しく仲間入りしてくれた真
依さんのご紹介もさせていた
だきました。
今年も色々なイベントを予
定し、生徒の皆さんと楽し
い時間をレッスン時間外で
も共有していきたいと思いま

New Years Eve in America
Another year has come and passed. 2014 was a
pretty good year for me. I moved a few times,
married my best friend, and started a whole new
adventure living in Japan. This year Nick and I
spent New Year’s Eve in Akakura at the hotel
where he works. It opened a few days before
Christmas and the first real rush of guests
arrived shortly after. There were people from
many English-speaking countries all gathered
together to celebrate the coming of the New
Year. It made me reflect on the various
traditions that are practiced around the world.

In America, New Years Eve is a big party
night. Many people from young to old dress
up and go out to a party, bar or club to ring
in the New Year with their friends. There is
typically a lot of drinking and sometimes
people go dancing. A big tradition in
America is to watch the live footage from
Times Square in New York City. People
gather in the famous landmark area and
wait for a giant glass ball to be
ceremoniously lowered down a spire. When
the ball reaches the bottom, it is midnight,
and the beginning of the New Year. It is
aired live on television so everyone across
the country can feel like they are
celebrating together. Another tradition is to
give someone a New Years kiss. This
person can be a romantic interest, or simply
a friend, but it is thought to bring good luck
for the year to come.
