The origins of the Chalandamarz festival can be traced back to the time when Switzerland was part of the Roman Empire and although the festival may have changed slightly over time it still continues to be held today. According to the Roman calendar the new year begins in March, which also coincides with the beginning of spring. Furthermore, in later times the town officials, who were elected in February, took up their offices on March 1st. As such the date of March 1st has always been significant. These days Chalandamarz is celebrated to mark the beginning of spring and to chase away evil spirits. The festival is especially fun for the children and in many villages preparations start weeks before the actual event. For example, in school children practice traditional Chalandamarz songs, while at home they craft flowers from coloured tissue paper later used as decorations, and practice cracking whips. The whips are made from long leather cords and the cracking sound is produced by whipping them at supersonic speed. The deafening cracks produced by the long whips are said to scare away the spirits Chalandamarz group on the steps of the Town Hall of winter. On the day of the festival the children wear traditional blue farmer Photo: Duri Zisler shirts, red neckerchiefs, red hats, and carry big cow bells with them. On the morning of March 1st the children walk through the village, singing Chalandamarz songs and ringing their cow bells. The children receive food and money from the villagers and the money is usually used for funding the next school trip. The festival varies slightly from village to village. For example in Zuoz only the boys participate in the procession through the village, while the girls prepare the ball in the evening. In Scuol there is a whipping contest which is also part of the festival. For the older boys the challenge is to produce the loudest cracks at a good rhythm while the younger boys compete over who is carrying the biggest bell. However, no matter which village you choose to visit for the festival, the children and viewers all enjoy themselves.
