天国の小さな隅っこに配置され、えびの高原が裏庭にあり、田

With the Ebino Plateau in my backyard, rice paddies and cotton candy skies, what more could one ask for,
being posted to my little corner of heaven. It is a little over a year now since I arrived in Ebino last
September. Coniferous trees and the landscape of the mountains lay out in front of me as I walk or drive
to school.
シンガポール出身でパリに数年間住んで、えびのでの暮らしが気分転換になることが分かりました。日
本の田舎の美しさと素朴さ、地域の人の温かさ、太陽、雲、星、高原。いつも高原に戻ります。高原は
私が訓練する場であり、運動する場です。韓国岳を登るのは
いつでも楽しいです。美味しい米から水の甘みまでえびのに
あるもの全ては自然そのままです。緑色の田んぼは無限に広
がっています。私はシンガポールの砂利道でのテンポの速い
生活からパリの玉石街路に、そして緑色の輝く田んぼに移動
しました。世界の片端からその正反対まで跳び越えるような、
えびのへの移住はジェットコースターのような大変爽快な
ものでありました。
Being from Singapore and having lived in Paris for a few
years, Ebino proved to be a refreshing change. The beauty
and simplicity of the Japanese countryside, the warmth of
the people in my community, the sun, the clouds, the stars,
the plateau, it always comes back to the plateau. It is my
training ground and my exercise corner. Climbing Mt Karakuni
is always a very pleasant experience. From the delicious rice
to the sweetness of the water, everything in Ebino is au
naturel. Patches of green rice paddies stretch out to infinity

spectrum to the other, it has proved to be a really
exhilarating roller coaster ride.
シンガポールは心地よい場所であり、友達と家族がいつも周
りにいる一方、個人主義の文化が盛んであるパリは程よい訓
練の場でありました。礼儀正しさを学び、“バラ色の人生”
みたいな華やかさが少し経験出来ました。フランスのワイン
と晩餐の文化、朝のパン屋から広がる焼き立てパンの香り、
それと同様に個性豊かな食文化がある国に来ることが出来、
非常に安心します。新鮮な刺身と寿司、有名なチキン南蛮と
豪華な宮崎牛、他の場所は考えられません。パリは個人主義
の文化ですが、日本は全てにコミュニティーに基づいていま
す。なんて並立と対立でしょう。私は二つの中でどれが好き
でしょうか。政治的に正しいように格好つけているわけでは
ありませんが、私は両方も好きです。全ての国と文化は異な
り、独特で、特有の美しさを保っています。適応、同化、そ
して、滞在期間に関わらず新しい場所を自分の新しい居場所
にさせるのは、自分の考え方次第です。
While Singapore is kind of a comfort zone, with my friends
and family all around, Paris proved to be a good training
ground, being of a more individualistic culture. I have learnt

the “savoir vivre” and experience a bit of “la vie en rose”. With the French wine and dine culture and the
fresh aroma of bread wafting in from the bakeries in the morning, it is with a great relief that I have
moved to another country with an equally strong food culture. With fresh sashimi and sushi, the famous
chicken nanban and the scrumptious Miyazaki beef, I cannot think of a better place to move to. While
Paris is individualistic, Japan is all about community. What a great juxtaposition and contrast. Which do I
prefer out of the two? Not trying to be politically correct, but I like them both. Every country and culture
is different, unique and beautiful in its own way. It is all about adaptation, integration and your mindset
about making a new place your new home no matter how long your stay is.
この平和で小さな街で、私はお気に入りの場所をようやく見つけました。古風のカフェから馬の公園と
山の頂上まで、自分の好きなこと全てを果たしてきました。登山、くつろぎ、そして乗馬。新しい場所
に着いた時にする経験は、場所よりも自分がどんな人なのかによって決まります。自分が環境とどのよ
うに触れ合い、どのように生活して、その中で成長するのか。ここえびのの人々はみんな友好的でやさ
しいので、ひとつになりやすいです。
I have managed to find my favorite hangouts in this little peaceful town. From quaint cafes to horse parks
and mountain tops, I have managed to do all the things that I love. Hiking, chilling and riding. It is not so
much the place but more the person you are when you arrived in a new place that determines the
experience that you are going to have. How you interact with the environment and how you live and grow
within it. Integration here is easy because the people here are just so welcoming and friendly.
県北には密かに海岸から離れ挟み込まれた美しさがあります。延岡の美しい公園と日向の素敵な馬ヶ背は宮
崎県北の魅力の一部です。海岸を沿っていくと、美しい鬼の洗濯岩戸共に青島があり、日南があり、続いて南
東部の先端に都井岬があります。太平洋を沿った海岸のドライブ、岬の坂で草をかんでいる野生の馬、岩にぶ
つかる波と共に草地に照らす日差し。何が気に入らないでしょうか。
The north of Miyazaki has beauty tucked secretly away on its coast. The very beautiful parks in Nobeoka
and the stunning Umagase in Hyuga are part of the northern Miyazaki charm. Going down the coast,
there’s Aoshima with the beautiful rock formations and then, there is Nichinan and subsequently Cape Toi
at the southeastern end. The coastal drive along the Pacific Ocean, the wild horses grazing on the slopes
of the Cape and the waves crashing against rocks with the sun rays shining down onto the grass, what’s
not to like?
全ての文化は異なります。自分とは違う母国語を話して様々な人生を送ってきた人々と友達になり、お
互いに触れ合いながら彼らの人生経験談を聞いてもらうのはとても素晴らしい経験です。えびのに来て
からずっと私の世話をしてくれた日本人の夫婦がいて、彼らはほとんど私の両親みたいです。私の両親
は彼らに出会ってすぐ好きになり、私は安心だと知って
います。えびのの人々に支えられ、ここによく馴染んで
いて、今私は第二の故郷がみつかった程です。
Every culture is different. Making friends with people
from all walks of life, with a first language different from
my own, interacting with them and gleaning from their
life experiences is such a wonderful experience. There is
a Japanese couple here who take such great care of me
since my arrival that they are almost like my parents. My
parents met them and like them immediately. They know
that I am in good hands. The people in Ebino have my
back, so integrated in the community that I am now, I
have found a home away from home.

Living in the mountains has taught me a great deal about
mountain people. Talking with the locals, it is said that
people living in the mountains are calm and even tempered. They speak quietly but articulately and are
immensely patient. People living by the sea are more hot blooded so to speak as they tend to be more
quick tempered, more exuberant despite having a warm heart all the same. This is so interesting to me
and I do hope that in living in Ebino, I have mellowed into a mountain girl with a calm disposition, leaving
the feisty Parisian traits behind in Paris for good.
今まで私は、私が過ごした全ての場所に自分の心の小さな一部を置いてきました。今私の心はこの場に
あります。段々愛しくなったこのすばらしい場所。ある日、もしこの場を去られざるを得ないとしたら、
きっと沢山の後悔が伴うでしょう。しかし、宮崎、特にえびのは、いつも私の心の特別な所にあるでし
ょう。
Every place I have lived in, I have left a little piece of my heart behind. Right now, my heart is in the here
and now. This wondrous place that I have grown to love. If ever, I have to leave one day, it would
certainly be with much regret. However, Miyazaki, especially Ebino, will always have a special place in my
heart.
