There are many theme parks in my hometown Shenzhen in China, so it’s a popular place for young people to spend New Year’s Eve. In ‘Happy Valley’, a theme park famous for extreme rides, a New Year’s countdown concert is held every year. Fans can simply enjoy the concert, or try out the attractions while listening to the music. In ‘Overseas Chinese Town East’, a big theme park covering a whole mountain, a northern European-style snow town is reproduced, so even in the southern part of China, you can celebrate New Year’s Day in the snow with your family and friends. All the theme parks set off fireworks at midnight. There are some people who visit the theme parks without entering just to watch the fireworks. (Yuqing Luo, China) In the United Kingdom, people usually spend New Year’s Eve at parties or gatherings with their friends. At these parties we toast the end of the year with champagne, and count down to midnight. As the clock strikes midnight, fireworks displays are held across the UK, with especially big ones in London. At the same time as the fireworks displays, people link arms and sing the New Year’s song ‘Auld Lang Syne’. The tune of Auld Lang Syne is the same as the Japanese ‘Hotaru no Hikari’, but in English the lyrics are about remembering old friends. If you have a partner or someone you like, it’s also traditional to kiss them at midnight. We only hold fireworks displays twice a year, on National Foundation day and Silvester, so fireworks are an important part of New Year’s Eve. The biggest fireworks display is held in Zurich and 200,000 people come to watch it every year. On 31st December, many food stands and live stages are set up around Lake Zurich, turning it into a big party venue. From 11:40pm to 11:58pm, all churches in Zurich ring bells to say goodbye to the old year. After the countdown, they ring bells again to welcome the new year. At the same time, all the buildings around Lake Zurich turn their lights off and fireworks are shot above the lake for 20 minutes.
