Understanding well-being, emotions and people’s occupation of the built environment is essential.” A Partner since 2008, Ellen has played a crucial role in the design of a diverse range of project types from the TU Delft Mekelpark Campus Master Plan to the Hilton Hotel, Schiphol many of these recipients of critical acclaim. She spear heads the healthcare ambitions of Mecanoo and is lead design architect of complex multifunctional projects such as: The headquarters of Eurojust (Agency of the European Union), The Hague (2015) and the renovation and extension of the Rijndam Rehabilitation Centre in Rotterdam. Ellen was Lead Design Architect for the award-winning Amsterdam University College. The success of these projects is largely due to a design approach defined by the accommodation of end-user interests in the design process. This approach has been applied in the realisation of educational, healthcare and commercial buildings alike. The process of asking the right questions and involving users, clients and other stakeholders in the early design stages enhances both the process and the final outcome. Projects she leads are both well-researched and truly serve their occupants both in terms of physical experience, long term flexibility and efficiency. A hallmark of her user-oriented design sensitivity is the LEAN Design driven project and Zaans Medical Centre and adjoining Care Boulevard, Zaandam (2016).
