Research Doctoral seminar Safety assessment of Nanoparticles

Research Doctoral seminar Safety assessment of Nanoparticles October, 27th 2014, 14 – 15.30h Venue: HP3, O&N2, Campus Gasthuisberg, Leuven Models to study fate and behaviour of nanoparticles after oral exposure Hans Bouwmeester, PhD. RIKILT, Wageningen UR Toxicology & Bioassays, Wageningen, NL Respiratory toxicity of high aspect ratio nanomaterials Sybille van den Brûle, PhD. Université Catholique de Louvain Institute of Experimental and Clinical Research (IREC) Louvain‐La‐Neuve, BE Background: Nanotechnology is a term that might sound abstract and high‐tech but, contradictory to what most people might think, it is not a distant reality. We encounter it daily when we brush our teeth, use sunscreen to protect our skin from sunburn, listen to music through our iPods or ride a modern, light bicycle. The many advantages and promising new applications and products that nanotechnology provides also raise safety concerns. Therefore, a separate branch of toxicology arose, nanotoxicology, which studies the toxicological properties resulting from the exposure to NPs. The two talks of this seminar will put some light on two (small) aspects of nanotoxicology. At 17.00 Katrien Luyts will present her doctoral thesis “Toxicity of nanoparticles after pulmonary exposure, effects on the lung‐blood barrier and beyond” at 17.00 (Auditorium van het Kasteel van Arenberg, Kasteekpark Arenberg 1, Heverlee) No registration needed.
