The Bonnefantenmuseum has been presenting the
Bonnefanten Award for Contemporary Art (BACA) every two years
since 2000. The award is a tribute to a living artist with an exceptional
oeuvre and a demonstrable influence on other artists – a real artists’
artist. The BACA consists of a sum of 50,000 Euros, a publication and
a solo exhibition in the Bonnefantenmuseum.
The BACA 2014 was awarded unanimously to the Brazilian
artist Laura Lima by the international selection committee for the
2014 edition, comprising: Alfred Pacquement (Honorary Director of
the Centre Pompidou, Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris), Cristiana
Tejo (independent curator, Recife), Ivo Mesquita (director of the
Pinacoteca do Estado, São Paulo) Victoria Noorthoorn (director of the
Museo de Arte Moderno Buenos Aires) and Stijn Huijts (director of the
Bonnefantenmuseum).
L AU R A L I M A
Laura Lima (1971, Governador Valadares, Brazil - Rio de
Janeiro) studied art at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage and
philosophy at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. In her
installations, Lima creates a new world and challenges the viewer to
give a new interpretation and explanation of concepts like exhibition,
action, gesture, philosophy, world and art. The artist forces us to look
in a different way, so that we enter a new relationship with what we
see, and find words to name the experience she presents us with.
‘Poetry, reason, meaning, madness, language, existence and
power’ are the keywords Lima uses herself to describe her art. She
manipulates the bodies of people and animals with her ornamental
philosophy - decorating the bodies as it were, and thus giving them
another meaning, which is often experienced as strange, absurd,
amusing, curious and sometimes monstrous.[1]
The opening of the exhibition the fifth floor by BACA laureate Laura
Lima will take place on 26 September from 18.00 to 20.00 in the
Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht. Everyone is welcome!
the fifth floor will be on view until 11.01.2015 in the
Bonnefantenmuseum and will then travel to the Museo de Arte
Moderno Buenos Aires in Argentina.

Contemporary artists treat the
urban context in very different
ways. Ranging from the creation
of autonomous, artistic images of
the city, to querying the current
socio-ecological or economic
situation, to the use of the
urban context as the base of an
artistic, participatory process.
The polarization between city as
' subject ' and the city as ' object
direct ' formed the basis for the
choice of works of art in the
project in CIAP.

received a arts PhD at StLucas Genth in 2011, with
his research ‘the unguarded

of control in drawing’. Ronny
Delrue wonders whether, in this
present technological world, the
drawing is still the ideal means
of depicting the turning point

as the perfect way of portraying
the interaction between chance

CIAP is an independent association for contemporary art. CIAP was founded in 1976 and its
operating methods are very comparable to the German model of the Kunstverrein, a model that is
not well known in Flanders. CIAP aims to respond to the local art scene in a two-way direction, on
the one hand by presenting from within the local context towards a larger (eu)regional public and
on the other hand by boosting the local artists, art-professionals and public by showing innovative
international artistic developments.

Solo exhibition of the German
artist David Lieske.
NAK. Neuer Aachener Kunstverein is one of the youngest institutions of it’s kind in Germany; a private non-profit association for contemporary art in the tradition of the German Kunstverein model.
NAK was founded in 1986 as a late echo of the 1964 Fluxus festival, with Joseph Beuys and Wolf
Vostell as center protagonist at the local university in Aachen. The spirit of this moment has since
been source of commitment to contemporary art.

Do you want to be
moved by art?
Contemporary—Art—Bustours Routes
Art does not need a common language,
it is international by itself.
The association of thirteen institutions in the Meuse-Rhine
Region is therefore as contemporary as the art they present. Within
a radius of 100 km, the border region of Belgium, the Netherlands
and Germany offers a large diversity of exhibitions and events many
of which can be visited in one day. The locations each have a very
individual approach and present art in the most appealing way:
direct and inspirational, reflective and in a special atmosphere. This
brochure wants to increase the awareness of what this region has to
offer in terms of visual arts. It is published twice per year and gives an
overview of exhibitions and events.
