Unique tradeshow boosts sector of surface treatment
Materia’s Future Skins also at Surface 2014
The preparations for the biggest trade event for surface treatment in the Netherlands and Belgium are going well.
The amount of preregistrations for a free visit are increasing fast and there are only some standspaces left. Surface
2014 wants to give the turnover of the sector in general and from its exhibitors in particular an extra boost. The
trade fair is an initiative of ION, the Dutch Association for Industrial Surface Treatment. Surface provides insight into
the added value of surface treatment of materials and applied technologies, and has inspiring, high-profile
exhibitions and activities to achieve this.
The trade fair will be opened by Guido Landheer, Director of Leading Sectors & Industrial Policy, Ministry of
Economic Affairs. Materia, the leading global network in the field of innovative materials, has put together the
“Future Skins” exhibition specially for Surface. It will show innovative materials that will inspire buyers, architects
and product developers. You can read more about the innovations, the large (international) list of participants, the
unique exhibitions, the Surface Lab, the informative presentations in this newsletter and your changes to increase
your market.
Special focus on cleansing important
At the Cleansing Plaza, cleansing will get the attention it deserves. Cleansing enhances the quality of the surface
treatment and the supplied product. Both pre-treatment and aftercare will be demonstrated. Visitors can also get all
the information about innovations, best practices, the advantages and the applications of cleansing. Participants are
for example Kemet Europe B.V. with ultrasonic cleansing, P-Laser with laser cleansing, Metalas Cleaning Systems
BV with spray cleansing, Kluthe Benelux with liquids and Enso Ontlakking with spray varnish removal.
Surface Lab increases
appreciation for the sector
A unique element is the Lab, where experts with
measuring equipment provide visitors insight into
the options for measuring quality in a “neutral”
environment. The lab attracted a lot of interest
at the edition of 2012. Traits such as roughness,
layer thickness, material analysis, porosity, colour,
scratch resistance, shine, hardness, elasticity
and wear resistance are measured in the lab. This
undoubtedly leads to even more appreciation for the
applicator’s craftsmanship and a further demand for
quality. Visitors can also bring their own samples for
assessment. Companies like ATP Engineering B.V.,
Helmut Fischer Meettechniek B.V., TQM Systems
and TQC participate in the Lab.
Future Skins exhibition
Super performance by surface treatment
Materia has put together an exhibition specially for Surface 2014, showing new innovative surface materials, special
objects and the interactive “Material Discovery”. Thanks to innovation, the performance of the surface - the skin
of each product - continues to improve. A product in the building industry, for example, must be able to withstand
rain and wind, scratches, chemicals, air pollution, UV-radiation, cleaning agents, and wear and tear. Furthermore,
the surface is increasingly able to perform interactively, for example absorb CO2, store or generate energy, change
colour, absorb noise and vibrations, neutralise odour and on top of that be environmentally friendly.
The technological developments seem endless. The latest ones will be shown at the Future Skins exhibition, which
makes it unique. It will feature 2.5D print, a structure created by means of the “2.5D printing technology”, and
MetaFuse, a nanocrystalline metal/polymer hybrid which is very strong and lightweight. And also Sibuglas, a PMMA
with a very decorative shiny appearance, the 3D-printed structures of Elkeslasi, and of course the photochromic,
electrochromic and thermochromic coatings that respond to the changing environment.
In addition to the material samples, special objects will be showed as well as the interactive “Material Discovery”,
where the visitor can investigate his/her favourite materials in detail on a screen with a macro camera. Materia
is the leading global network in the field of innovative materials. It encourages innovation in order to achieve a
more attractive and more sustainable high-quality built environment. Based on
its collection of more than 2,000 materials, Materia brings together creative
professionals and the industry by means of Materia.nl, international exhibitions,
lectures and the biennial event MaterialXperience. More info: www.materia.nl
Colour theme at Surface 2014
We all know that our environment influences how we
feel and behave. At Surface, colour will be the centre of
attention at the Colour Experience Exhibition. Presentations will take place in the theatre, which specifically answer questions about the effect of colour on people, how
we experience colour in a room, the concept of colour
accuracy, and the standards and permitted tolerances
for colours. Colour has become an indispensable design
tool, but unfortunately there are still many misunderstandings about colour. The Dutch
Colour Centre, along with guest
speakers such as Tata Steel, will
reveal some interesting facts
about colour.

Exhibition Surface Solutions for
an ideal orientation
This exhibition at the entrance of Surface gives an
overview of solutions per theme by means of samples
made by surface treatment. Subjects are sterility, heat
resistance, sustainability, structure, low maintenance,
hardness, corrosion, hygienic. An ideal starting point
for buyers, architects, constructors en product developers for specific orientation.
Knowledge sharing and meeting in the theatre
International list of participants
A varied programme of informative presentations about best practices and innovative technologies will take place at
the Surface 2014 theatre. Knowledge sharing and meeting are the elements that generate a lot of appreciation for
the theatre.
Nowhere else in the Netherlands and Belgium has such
a broad, comprehensive range of surface treatments
been brought together. Surface 2014 offers everything
for the surface treatment of materials such as metal,
stainless steel, wood, plastic, glass, aluminium,
ceramics, concrete and textile. From the latest
technologies, production resources, ancillary resources
and ingredients to a broad range of specialist surface
treatment experts. A selection from the long list of 175
exhibitors:
From improved laser-clad coatings to chain optimisation
The Materials innovation institute M2i will give a
presentation on improved laser-clad coatings for
extreme conditions. These coatings are hard and durable
by nature. However, under extremely corrosive conditions
and as a consequence of rough treatment they can get
damaged. M2i has successfully developed improved laserclad coatings for hydraulic cylinders for the maritime
industry, where such conditions may occur. They are harder
and have better shock resistance, and are also more
resistant against corrosion and wear. Dr Hemmati will give
a presentation on 9 October.
More info: Derk Bol, M2i
Program Manager,
[email protected].
The 5C concept of Cut it, Clean it, Coat it, Conserve it
and Clear it is chain optimisation at its best, as will
be discussed by Barry Groeneveld from Kluthe Benelux
at the theatre. This concept makes life easier for the
customer and leads to significant cost reductions: “If you
don’t add it, you don’t have to remove it.” The 5C concept
is not only being introduced in integrated companies, but
it also encourages supplying companies, applicators and
customers to consult with each other
at an early stage about the process to
be followed. The realistically possible
cost savings are made transparent.
Robin Sommers of Van Beek Ingenieurs
will give presentations on the options for
reducing energy costs that are specific to
the sector.
Productieprogramma
Michael Baas of Aldor will hold a practicebased presentation on anodisation
for researchers, product developers,
designers and aluminium workers. It will
deal with new aluminium applications
made possible by innovative surface
treatment. The functional properties of
the aluminium oxide coating are strongly
influenced by the design and alloy.
The end product can be given
additional functionalities by means
of (electrochemical) process
modifications and by impregnating
the pores with additives (colour,
lubricants and oxidation inhibitors).
Innovations from participants
Radiographic dead man’s handle
Amitech from Harderwijk introduces THE REMO, a dead man’s handle for
blasting machines, in replacement of the existing control air hoses and/or
electric cables, which are liable to leak or break. The handle does not have
to be physically powered, which often leads to sabotage. The blasting
process is started and halted by means of a belt with transmitter and key
with anti-drop cord. The REMO has a range of 80 metres and has been CE
certified. More info: www.amitech.nl
Prevention of galling
Lubotechnics from Kortgene will present its environmentally-friendly
coating as a solution for galling on stainless-steel screw threads. The
coating consists of 100% natural ingredients and complies with the
FDA standard. This means it is extremely suitable for the food sector. In
addition to its unique effect, the use of this coating on screw threads will
increase efficiency and therefore reduce the costs.

Easy method for de-rusting stainless
steel
Acid rain, steel particles, sea air and other ambient
factors affect the surface of stainless steel. They cause
corrosion and make the surface dull and dirty. Cibo,
producer of abrasive, grinding and polishing products in
Tildonk (BE) offers a revolutionary solution for corrosion,
tea stains and other impurities on stainless steel with

Laser cladding, weld cladding without
distortion
Revamo from Meppel uses thermal spraying to apply a
broad variety of coatings and so control wear and tear.
Laser cladding is a new method. It makes it possible
to apply a layer of a very high quality with minimum
mixing in of the basic material. The limited heat input
means that in most parts there is no distortion either,
and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) is kept to a minimum.
The minimum mixing in of basic material also means
that the quality of the cladding layer is guaranteed.

New solution for cleaning welding
joints
Mijlpaal Produkten from Maasland will show the revolutionary welding joints cleaner with the latest technology, based on the use of carbon fibre brushes, at
Surface 2014. This device can quickly and easily remove
the discolouration on welding joints and passivate stainless steel in one single movement, without the use of
aggressive agents. Leaving no traces like white stains
or colour differences, no further treatment is required,
which makes it very time efficient.

Revolutionary new zinc coating
Over the past few decades, the emphasis in electrolytic
galvanising has been increasingly on quality. As quality mainly translates as corrosion resistance, this has
been given a lot of attention at GTO Plating in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Based on the traditional yellow and blue
passivations, the so-called Dunnschicht (96 hours WR)
and Dickschicht (200 hours WR) passivations have been
added to the production options. The current development is the revolutionary new zinc coating, which even
after 2000 hours does not show any white rust.

Improved adhesion with new lowpressure plasma system
Sinvacon bvba from Gavere (BE) has added a low-cost
RIE plasma system to its range, the ZEPTO RIE Top
loader, specifically developed for treating 6” wafers.
This is a low-pressure plasma system which can clean
and etch very efficiently with a precisely aimed plasma.
The ZEPTO – W6 is a low-pressure plasma system,
suitable for deep cleaning parts, resulting in a strong
increase in the surface energy. This considerably
improves the adhesion for coatings.

Metallisation of plastic products
In addition to metal surface treatments, Multinal
Group is now also offering the metallisation of ABS/
ABS blends of plastic by means of POP. Plating
on Plastics stands for the high-grade metallisation
of plastic. Multinal Group applies this by means
of the galvanic surface treatments of coppering,
nickelling and chroming, with the aim to enhance the
decorative and/or functional properties of plastic. The
galvanised cover layer guarantees the durability and
attractive look of the ABS plastic product. It can be
used for domestic, sanitary and automotive products
as well as technical parts.

Energy-efficient purification of return
air by means of concentrations of
solvents
It has been possible to significantly reduce the use of
organic solvents (VOCs) for material coatings over the
past few years. However, complete replacement in the
future is not an option. It is therefore very important to

Laser structures of metal and ceramic
surfaces
Surfaces can be given a quick, dry, solvent-free treatment by means of lasers. ECN has the expertise and
resources to treat materials such as ceramics, metal
and plastic with laser. It can write very fine patterns in
surfaces, and structure surfaces, including those of brittle materials, to create a different look. By applying submicron structures onto the surface of solar collectors,
reflection is reduced and efficiency is improved. The
treatment of brittle materials is difficult, because they
break quickly. By using a laser with a very short pulse,
it makes it possible to treat the surface of brittle materials. With this technique it is possible to give ceramic
materials a different ‘look’. More info: www.ecn.nl
