1. GENERAL PRESS RELEASE
Press release - Kortrijk, 3 November 2014
The indoor top event for the professionals of the potato, vegetable and fruit sector keeps on
growing. INTERPOM | PRIMEURS: 23-24-25 november 2014 in Kortrijk Xpo
The 17th edition of INTERPOM | PRIMEURS will take place between Sunday 23 and Tuesday 25 November
2014 at Kortrijk Xpo (Belgium). INTERPOM | PRIMEURS, the most specialised indoor trade fair in Europe for
the potato, vegetable and fruit sector, has broken a new record number with 270 exhibitors. This year it will be
taking up the whole of the whole Kortrijk Xpo fair complex and representing the whole chain of the sector from
growing to processing and marketing. In a market that is characterised by extremes with record high prices last
season and anticipated very low prices for the season ahead, INTERPOM | PRIMEURS is without a shadow of
doubt the specialist platform par excellence for keeping abreast of all the latest developments taking place in the
market. It is no coincidence that INTERPOM | PRIMEURS has grown over the years into the leading forum that
attracts the presence of almost 18,000 professionals each time. At the fair, they discover an impressive
assortment of products and innovations for their different sectors and meet up with colleagues and suppliers
from here at home as well as abroad. In the comfort of an extremely refined and professional ambiance.
INTERPOM | PRIMEURS 2014 guarantees its visitors professional, specialist information and hospitality so that
they are guaranteed an interesting and enjoyable visit!
Anticipating the next trends
Everybody is fully aware that the potato market is often subject to considerable fluctuations, but nobody could
have imagined that it would be subject to such extreme fluctuations as it has been over the past three years.
After record high prices in the open market during the 2012-2013 season, and the roller coaster ride during the
2013-2014 season, we are seeing prices hitting rock bottom at the start of the 2014-2015 season. High yields of
crops grown on an increasing surface area throughout the whole of the European potato growing areas is the
reason behind this. We should not lose sight of the fact that there has been a sharp increase in the share of
contractual production for the fresh market as well as for the processing market in recent years which means
that the impact of the volatile open market on the global potato situation in the Benelux has not been too drastic.
There is a long way to go until the end of the season and we will not be able to make a final assessment of the
situation until June. Although a lot of visitors and exhibitors at INTERPOM | PRIMEURS are already busy
forecasting the contractual market trends for the forthcoming season.
INTERPOM | PRIMEURS 2014 takes over the whole Kortrijk Xpo complex.
INTERPOM | PRIMEURS – a manifestation of uninterrupted growth. Yet again this year, our trade fair can boast
growth in both the number of exhibitors as well as the surface area of the trade fair: 270 exhibitors (+ 4.6%) from
15 countries showcasing products and services on an indoor surface area of 31,500m² (+ 12.6%) which covers
all six halls of the Kortrijk Xpo trade fair complex. This trade fair plays an important role as a meeting platform
and source of innovation for innovative technologies for the potato, vegetable and fruit sector chain, and is the
ideal location for exchanging information. Thanks to the complete range of products and services, the strong
specialisation, the professional character and the friendly ambiance at the fair, the potato, vegetable and fruit
sector chooses Kortrijk Xpo for its biannual rendezvous time after time. INTERPOM | PRIMEURS is can count
on the great numbers of loyal visitors that include growers, employees, processers, packers, purchasers and
traders of fresh and processed potatoes, vegetables and fruit from all over Europe and also increasingly from
other continents. The last edition opened its doors to a total of 17,678 visitors (+25.7% compared to 2010) from
36 countries around the world. And the organisers are expecting large crowds of visitors again this year.
‘TOGETHER FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH’ is the theme of the event
A large number of projects have been set up in the potato and vegetable sector around ‘sustainability’. This is
crucial if we want to provide good quality, tasty products for the next generation. The organizers of INTERPOM |
PRIMEURS are aiming to raise awareness of what sustainable growth entails by presenting concrete case
studies of companies in the sector. Under the banner of the event’s theme of ‘together for sustainable growth’,
exhibitors can present what their company has done with respect to one or more of the 3 pillars of sustainability:
‘People, Planet & Profit’. These companies’ projects will be incorporated in a ‘sustainability route’ on the
exhibition floor, underlining the importance of new insights and innovations to ensure sustainable growth in the
sector. Walking this route will undoubtedly yield a wealth of inspiration for your own projects.
INNO POTATO AWARD 2014: prizes presented during the fair
The third edition of the Inno Potato Award is a competition designed to reward the introduction of innovations in
agricultural businesses. For their colleagues in the sector, three Flemish and three Walloon potato growers
present the innovations they have developed and applied in their own enterprises. During INTERPOM |
PRIMEURS, the project are presented through interviews and video reports. A professional jury has already
awarded 50% of the total number of marks to be given, and visitors at INTERPOM | PRIMEURS will decide the
remaining 50% during the first two days of the event. Prizes will be presented in Hall 6 at Kortrijk Xpo at 12pm on
Tuesday 25 November, in the presence of the regional Ministers of Agriculture Mrs. Joke Schauvliege and Mr.
René Collin.

Three seminars on Monday 24 November
In addition to a broad range of exhibitors from different sectors and the innumerable networking opportunities,
INTERPOM | PRIMEURS also proposes three interesting and varied seminars that will be held on Monday 24
November. Dr. Annette Förschler (QS), Brigitta Wolf (Vegaplan) and Ir. Bert Waterink (VVA/VVAK) will discuss
quality systems that can be exchanged among the potato, vegetables and fruit sector for instance. Fedepom &
Belgapom will also be holding a panel discussion with Sascha Siegel (Eurex) and Edwin Burgers (DCA) on the
theme of ‘is the futures market an instrument for spreading risk in trading and processing ?’. Another theme to be
covered will be ‘Generic promotion of potatoes and potato products’ that will be presented by Katrien De Nul
(Vlam) and Luc Roisin (Apaq-W). Kate Cox of the British Potato Council (the British equivalent of Vlam & ApaqW) will also present her own British promotional campaign and explain the impact it has had. And finally, Romain
Cools (Belgapom) will present the brand new promotional campaign ‘Belgian potato products from the land of
the ‘frite’. The Belgian potato processing sector has recently become the biggest exporter of frozen chips in the
world. Belgian potato products are reaching an increasing number of consumers on all five continents.
The seminars will take place in the Kortrijk Xpo Meeting Centre (adjoining Hall 6) and there is no admission fee
for visitors to the trade fair or for exhibitors and there is no need to register in advance.
Dynamic meeting platform for a growth market
With its home base in Kortrijk (Xpo), INTERPOM | PRIMEURS is held in the heart of a dynamic and expanding
potato, vegetable and fruit market. This is the perfect place to make new contacts and reinforce links with
colleagues and suppliers in Belgium and abroad, to exchange ideas and share information in a sector with a
rosy future. Note the date in your diary straight away!
INTERPOM PRIMEURS is an initiative of Belgapom, the official trade association of the Belgian potato growers
and processors. The practical organisation is in the capable hands of Kortrijk Xpo.

17.678 TRADE VISITORS
Since the first edition of INTERPOM in Kortrijk, the number of visitors has grown steadily, and the event has
achieved a real international breakthrough. At the last INTERPOM | PRIMEURS event in 2012, 17 678
professionals from 36 different countries visited the trade fair. This was a spectacular increase of 25.7%
compared to 2010. 2012–13 was a challenging and surprising season for the potato sector and together with the
high prices, this was an extra reason to visit INTERPOM | PRIMEURS two years ago.

PROGRAM

EQUIVALENCE OF QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR POTATO, VEGETABLE AND FRUIT GROWERS
Speakers: Dr. Annette Förschler (QS) – Mrs. Brigitta Wolf (Vegaplan) – ir. Bert Waterink (VVA/VVAK)
For more than a decade, the Belgian horticultural sector has been deploying its Vegaplan, a quality system for
food and plant safety and environmental protection that is recognised by both the authorities and users. A
striking feature is the ‘bottom-up’ approach whereby the primary sector works together with purchasers to
develop the system further. In 2014 the Vegaplan standard expanded to include sustainability and integrated
pest management (IPM). Certification under the Vegaplan thus became a pioneer in guaranteeing sustainability
and health safety in the growing and processing of fruit and vegetables. But potatoes and vegetables move
beyond national frontiers and this is why our quality control system and those of our main neighbours have to be
interchangeable. Consequently, the Dutch Food Safety Certificate for Potatoes and Arable Farming, the German
QS and the Belgian Vegaplan are all recognised as equivalent.
Structural consultation has been launched between the partners to this end. An international seminar on how
this international cooperation should evolve will be held on
12:00 - 13:00
THE FUTURES MARKET: AN INSTRUMENT FOR SPREADING RISKS IN TRADING AND PROCESSING?
Speakers: Mrs. Sascha Siegel (Eurex) – Edwin Burgers (DCA) - Organization: Fedepom & Belgapom
Potato growers have already been using the futures market for some time but as yet, not many people are using
this instrument in the trading and processing sectors. Fedepom, the French association for the potato trade, and
Belgapom, the Belgian association for potato traders and processors, are working together to offer their
members an afternoon seminar introducing them to how the futures market works and the possibilities it offers
for their businesses.
Eurex, which covers the potato trading futures market, and a broker will be here to answer your questions. The
presentation will be in English, with simultaneous translation into French.
14:00 - 15:30
GENERIC PROMOTION OF POTATOES AND POTATO PRODUCTS
Speakers: Katrien De Nul (Vlam) – Luc Roisin (Apaq-W) – Kate Cox (British Potato Council) & Romain Cools
(Belgapom)
Both in Flanders and Wallonia, the potato sector has built up extensive experience of promoting fresh potatoes
on the domestic market and as an export. Promotional campaigns are set up in conjunction with Vlam and ApaqW to stimulate potato consumption among consumers in general. Vlam and Apaq-W will be presenting a seminar
detailing how these campaigns are set up and the concrete results they have yielded. The British Potato Council,
the British equivalent of Vlam / Apaq-W, will also present its own campaign and the impact it has had.
In addition, the new Belgian campaign for the promotion of processed potatoes will also be unveiled. Belgian
potato processors have recently established themselves as the largest exporters of frozen chips in the world:
Belgian potato products are reaching more and more customers in all continents. Real ‘Belgian chips’ can be
distinguished from similar products from other producers on the basis of taste, all-round enjoyment and
authenticity and this will be the basis of the new promotional campaign: ‘Belgian potato products from the land of
the potato chip’.
3.2 TOGETHER FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH
With the great number of challenges facing the potato sector today, the organisers
decided on the theme of sustainability as the ideal mainstay for this edition of
INTERPOM | PRIMEURS.
th
The 17 edition of INTERPOM | PRIMEURS has been designed around the theme of
sustainable growth therefore, a facet that will be highly visible thanks to the slogan
‘Together for sustainable growth’. The aim of INTERPOM | PRIMEURS is to promote
awareness about sustainable growth and it has laid out a ‘Sustainability Route’ along the floor of the trade fair.
This walk guides visitors to discover specific projects and provides them with information about how the
exhibitors approach to the three main pillars of sustainability: ‘People, Planet, Profit’. These projects underline
the importance of new insights and innovations required in order to guarantee sustainable growth in the sector.
The Sustainability Route
All exhibitors have been given the opportunity to present a specific and educational case story. The material that
was submitted has been judged by an independent jury. The projects that are selected then form part of a
‘Sustainability route’ on the floor of the trade fair. The exhibitors that are included in the route are all clearly
identified on wobblers at the edge of the stands and a floor sticker right in front of the stands.
Here are a few examples of the submissions that have been selected
A number of different exhibitors have already obtained a Sustainable Enterprise Charter that is awarded by the
provinces in Belgium. There are also a number of companies who draw up their own Sustainability Plan or
Charter that is adapted specifically for their own companies.
VDH Concept has created a foil made with 30% recycled material that can be used with food. This may seem
like a simple concept, but when it comes to food the challenge is a bit more complicated because food cannot
come into direct contact with the recycled part of any packaging.
Kiremko, in partnership with Ecofrost, the processing company, has worked intensively on reducing steam and
odour emissions. One result of this is also a reduction in water and energy consumption and a reduction in the
amount of frying oil used.
Deroo Constructie sent in a submission outlining its automatic covering system for transport vehicles. Not only
does this reduce traffic accidents considerably, it also reduces losses during loading and it means that different
requirements regarding specifications are also covered.
By ensuring advanced water purification, Van Antwerpen Milieutechniek is able to increase the use of recycled
water by up to 95%. All the clay, sand, bacteria, pesticides and the breakdown products are all completely
removed from the water. In addition to the considerable reduction in water consumption there are also
considerable financial gains to be made.
The potato processing company Mydibel works with the Green Factory concept. Examples of this approach are
cleaning during the working week when the price demand and price of energy is higher, fermenting potato
residue in its organic gas-driven engine, using fewer pesticides, optimising working conditions, ensuring
wellbeing in the workplace.
In addition to the examples shown here, there is also a wide range of other projects that deserve your attention.
All of the projects are presented on the INTERPOM PRIMEURS website under the section ‘Together for
sustainable growth’.
Each company is presented on an individual sheet.
The catalogue for the trade fair also offers a total listing of the companies that have been included in the
Sustainability Route.

Tourism: spend a day in the city of Kortrijk!
Kortrijk is the historical central town of one of the most dynamic regions in Flanders. The town looks back on a
gripping historical past. Over seven centuries ago, Kortrijk was the setting for the Battle of the Golden Spurs, one
of the key symbols of the Flemish struggle for emancipation. More recently, the flax industry, leaving a myriad of
economic imprints on the region, served to lend the town its solid international reputation. Today, Kortrijk stands
proud as a multifaceted modern town, intensively investing in its future. Melding tradition and innovation, Kortrijk
combines a due sense of history and a forward-looking vision of the future ….
