OUR
SUSTAINABILITY
STORY
SUSTAINABLE SOURCES
Sustainability for Smurfit Kappa implies
a clear commitment to the three important
sustainability principles:
All the fibre that we produce and purchase comes
from a sustainable or non-controversial origin.
This ensures that the fibre resources we use are
responsibly managed.

TRANSPARENCY IN OUR PROCESSES
Our supply chain is Chain of Custody certified
under FSC, PEFC or SFI. This provides full
transparency and traceability for the complete
fibre flow throughout our business.
CHAIN OF CUSTODY CERTIFIED
An important goal is to ensure that substantially
all of our paper-based packaging can be Chain
of Custody certified under FSC®, PEFC™ or SFI®.
This guarantees that the paper and packaging which
we supply to our customers is sustainably produced.
PROMOTING RENEWABLE ENERGY
Decreasing our fossil CO2 emissions contributes to a
less carbon-intensive economy. We promote the use of
renewable energy sources where economically feasible.
MANAGING OUR
PRECIOUS RESOURCES
ENGAGING WITH
OUR SUPPLIERS
Water is a vital element in
our manufacturing process
and we recognise that fresh
water availability is a growing
global concern. Our objective
is to minimise the impact
of our water usage on the
environment and improve the
quality of our water discharge.
Our commitment is to
promote sustainable
practices throughout
the entire supply chain
by actively engaging
with our suppliers. This
helps our processes and
products to become
more sustainable.
EVERYONE BENEFITS
Reducing waste is a win-win for our environmental
impact and our operational efficiency.
SUPPORTING
COMMUNITIES
Our people are at the heart of our business –
they are proud and passionate about their work.
Providing healthy and safe working conditions for
our employees is one of our core values.
Community involvement is
a fundamental corporate
social responsibility. The
Smurfit Kappa Foundation
and our local operations
support activities and
community programmes
focusing on health and
education.
CONSTANTLY IMPROVING
We have invested and will continue to make investments
that will further decrease the environmental impact of our
operations. Sustainable production taking into account
local conditions is an important pillar of our business.
INNOVATION IS KEY
PROVIDING SUPPORT
SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS
Recovered paper is a base raw material for us
and is a major contributor to the environmental
and social benefits of recycling.
We actively support the
work of NGOs and similar
organisations that focus on
the environment and social
issues: UN Global Compact,
FSC, PEFC, SFI, CDP, Water
Footprint Network, Sedex,
BITCI, etc.
Designing and supplying
innovative sustainable
packaging solutions to
our customers is our
key business. Our goal
is to help our customers
to optimise their supply
chain, support their
sustainability efforts
and reduce the carbon
footprint of the product
cycle.
ONGOING
COMMITMENT
PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT
Conservation and biodiversity are the main principles
in managing our forests. Significant parts of our
forests are natural protected areas where we provide
habitat for a variety of rare and endangered species.
We believe sustainability
increasingly forms
part of investors’
considerations.
Our commitment
to sustainability will
enable us to broaden
our potential investor
base to include those
with a preference for
sustainable companies.
