laboratory for local plastic up-cycling (2014)
s
WASTED proposes to open a new window on
aspects of everyone’s life that are so ordinary
that we almost forget about them: a grocery
bag, an empty water bottle, the wrapping of your
lunch or the box around your take-away. What
happens with it after you dispose of it?
WASTED is a community laboratory for smallscale reprocessing of plastic waste located in the
Noorderpark in Amsterdam Noord. Its main goal
is to work with the local community to up-cycle
plastic waste collected from the neighbourhood
into products for the neighbourhood.

Kinectic reprocessing machines
To use as little electricity as possible,
the plastic processing machines are
designed to use kinetic energy. The
plastic processing machines will
become a playful fitness facility where
to combine sport/leisure and plastic
processing while socializing.
WASTED economy
After the laboratory has been running for 6
months the goal is to esthablish a business
model to have a lasting impact on the
neighbourhood. Residents will have learned
how to reprocess the plastic and the material
and products made in the laboratory can
be sold to different organisations and
businesses around the city and country.

WASTED summer programme
When the laboratory is running, people
from the neighbourhood and the rest of
the city will be invited to participate in
a program of plastic related events. This
program will showcase the products
created in the WASTED laboratory and
aims to educate people about ways to
fight the waste of plastic.
Community plastic collection
Neighbourhood
residents,
local
businesses and schools will separate
their plastic waste and bring it to the
laboratory. Next to the laboratory, a
container will be situated to collect
plastic waste and track the amount of
waste collected and a plastic waste
pick-up service will be set up.

text and diagrams on economics (2014)
Even though we engage in economic activities
on a daily basis, ordinary citizens usualy have no
understanding of the system. Since the global
crisis there has been a lot of publications on the
failures of capitalism and how we could repair,
improve, and perhaps replace it. But before
thinking about what could be changed, we
have to understand how our current economic
system actually works. In an attempt to facilitate
an assessment, I try to clarify some of the main
principles in the current economic system
in a series of essays. Each of these essays
is accompanied by one or more explanatory
diagrams.

Surplus value
The image above illustrates the general
principle of capital accumulation.
Reading from left to right, we see the
following process: in order to produce
any commodity, labour (1) has to meet
with materials (2), including means of
production, in a productive environment
(3). At this point something extraordinary
happens: surplus value (4) is created. When
we look at the final price of the product
just produced, it consists of the price of
production (5), which includes material
resources, labour, means of production,
and profit (6). It is important to stress that
the price of production already includes a
fee for the producer, which means profit is
3
equal to the surplus value that came falling
from the sky before. But once this profit
has been generated, where does it lead to?
Profit is used to invest (7) in new means of
production, expanding production capacity
or research and development. Regardless
of its direct application, the final goal is to
apply this profit to generate more profit:
accumulation for accumulation’s sake.

Exchange
This word is so common to us that we
tend to stop questioning its meaning.
The question in this essay is: what is
different between economic (left) and
social exchange (right)? Relationships
among friends and neighbours are
usually based on reciprocity rather
than on an exchange of equal values.
This relationship is very flexible, and
allows for the exchange of values over
a long period of time. Attempting to
“settle the debt” would be like ending
the friendship. At the same time,
deviating too much from a point of
balance is not acceptable either.

Kustkwaliteit
safety and identity of coastal towns (2011)
The Dutch coast loses its competitive edge
as a touristic destination, economic hub,
and defensive structure against the sea. In
collaboration with Provincie Noord-Holland,
Deltares, TU Delft and FABRIC, alternatives for
future development of the coastal areas have
been designed.
Workshops with local government officials and
watermanagement-engineers allowed for an
exhange in knowledge between disciplines and
resulted in a series of development strategies.
These strategies combine coastal defense with
urban program and spatial quality, resulting in
a revitalised local economy and tourism sector
and an increased level of water-safety. Each
of these strategies consists of coastal defense
measures, an animation of the resulting coastal
developments, a programmatic design for the
region, and the design of an examplary urban
tissue.

To acquire an understanding of who the
applicants to their resident programme are, the
Rijksakademie commisioned a report based on 5
years of data. The dataset contains information
about the nationality and education of applicants,
but also lists what discipline they work in and if
they submitted recommendation letters along
with their application.
While the analysis of the data has been done
by a researcher, the visualisations are done by
me. The challenge has been to compress a lot
of information in a single graph while keeping
its appearance neat and clean. Moreover, each
topic focuses on three stages: applicants,
interviewees and selected students. Because
the Rijksakademie wants to understand how
successul their selection process is, the relation
between the different stages had to be made
explicit.

Q-BRIXX manual
manual for an innovative building material (2014)
Construction company De Mobiele Fabriek
(DMF) developed a NEN certified process to upcylce debris into a new construction material:
the Q-BRIXX system. The first application of
this system is to build housing for low-income
groups in Haïti, to be designed by Rotterdam
based architectural firm XCOOP. The goal of
the project is to provide affordable and durable
housing that can be constructed locally. In order
to facilitate the construction the design of a
manual is required. My commision was to design
a few different housing typologies and prepare a
document that shows the different steps in the
construction of the house, similar to a manual.

Nylân
neighbourhood revitalisation Leeuwarden (2012)
kinderboerderij
As part of the masterplan for the revitalisation
of the neighbourhood Nylân in the city of
Leeuwarden the flow of resources through the
area has been reconsidered. After the initial
analysis a range of flows has been chose to
redesign.
Apart from an investment in local production
aided by a local currency things like the
maintenance of public green, the use of WIFI
networks and the recycling of waste water have
been reconfigured. The intention is to make
the neighbourhood less dependend on external
resources, and strengthen the local economy.
In order to draft a cohesive plan, all possiblities
had to be quantified through a thorough research.
Ultimately, my findings were communicated
through a series of infographics.
