De ebola-epidemie eist steeds meer levens en maakt een ravage van
Liberia, Guinee en Sierra Leone. Ook de West-Afrikaanse gemeenschap
in Amsterdam Zuidoost maakt zich grote zorgen. Wat zou iedereen
moeten weten over de besmettelijke ziekte ebola? We geven antwoord
aan het publiek. Op vrijdagavond 14 november (19-23 uur) vindt het
Ebola Diaspora plaats in Amsterdam Zuidoost.
Buurtambassadeurs Bijlmer Centrum en Migrants Consortium Against Ebola organiseren het ‘EBOLA DIASPORA’ in Podium ZO!.

Er zijn presentaties over ebola, armoede en gezondheid, stigmatisering en
motivatie. Er is een informatiemarkt, een tombola, je kunt proeven van Afrikaans-Surinaamse gerechten en genieten van een concert van de
Shain Band, reggae en afrobeat van de
legendarische artiest Amara Kabba uit Sierra Leone.

Ook is er een CD-verkoop voor blinden en slechtzienden in Sierra Leone. Zij worden door
de ebola-crisis extra zwaar getroffen. In West-Afrika
zijn blinden voor hun mobiliteit en communicatie afhankelijk van lichamelijk contact met anderen.
Dat isonmogelijk volgens het ebola-ABC
‘Avoid Body Contact’. Hoe overleven zij deze strijd?
Bezoekers krijgen tijdens de ebola-avond antwoord op de volgende vragen:
• Kun je op dit moment nog gewoon naar West-Afrika te vliegen? En als
je het overweegt, waar moet je rekening mee houden en hoe vermijd je
besmetting?
• Wat betekent Ebola daar eigenlijk voor ons hier? Stigmatisering voor
mensen uit West-Afrika ligt op de loer. En wat zou daarop een antwoord
op kunnen zijn?
• Wat kun je doen om op een of andere manier een bijdrage te leveren aan
het stoppen van de epidemie, die zich momenteel manifesteert als een
humanitaire ramp?

ACTION
The aim of Shain foundation is to improve the social positions of musicians in
Sierra Leone and positively influence the music industry. This is essential in a
country which is recovering from one of Africas most destructive civil wars and
is now struggling with the most devastating ebola-epidemic ever.
The Shain foundation finds it very important to use music as a medium to
tackle social issues and reach out to the public in Sierra Leone and abroad.
Vision for the Blind is an ambitious group of blind musicians from Sierra
Leone, who produced their debut album Salone go bete (the day will come
that Sierra Leone will be prosperous) with the Shain foundation. To them the
meaning of this album is not only a long cherished dream, but also a means of
fundraising for their welfare organization, Vision for the Blind, which among
others sets up vocational training projects and small-scale industries for the
blind and visually impaired.
At a time like this, of an unprecedented ebola-outbreak causing chaos in
Sierra Leone, Vision for the Blind is crying out for help. Blind people are
especially prone to the virus. The Ebola-ABC “Avoid Body Contact” is largely
counterproductive. It confirms with no modicum of doubt their extreme
vulnerability since their livelihood is inextricably linked to body contact and
interaction.

As most Ebola prevention messages put out are pictorial and visual, there
are limited messages on Ebola prevention the blind and visually impaired can
access. As such, special needs Ebola messages for them should be designed
if the holistic objective of ridding the whole nation of the dreadful disease is to
be achieved.
