The first King’s Day celebration amongst it. The report will be published in the June issue of the Echo. Our Entertainment Manager, Annie van der Dussen will be on her way home again. (Thank goodness!!!!!) although I must say our assistant E.M., Jose Nijstad, has been absolutely marvellous. Her only problem is she moans more than Annie. Oops.......just joking, Jose! There is no entertainment report this month but you will find everything that is going to happen in May clearly published in this Echo. I like to say how much the children loved our fabulous Easter Bunny this year. Didn’t he look marvellous with his cute round bunny tummy? Yes, he was marvellous and I hope we can depend on him next Easter! For those who are interested: My foot is a lot better and the crutches are going back on Monday because I can walk very well without them! The ‘moonslipper’ I still have to wear but it is looking very glamourous. My dear friend Isabel van den Berg has come out in sympathy with me and also has a sore foot but she has gone ‘overboard’ and is now getting around in a wheelchair. I am happy to see Mr Dick Smit has submitted another episode of his Indonesian sojourn “Echoings”. Dick has been in hospital. If you like some more information you can ring his wife Linda at 942 9547. Sad to see that quite a few of our members have had to travel unexpected to the Netherlands to spend with sick elderly parents. It seems to happen more and more when you near 50 years of age that you have to make these sudden journeys back to the home country. I wish all you travellers lots of strength. Yoka Saris ECHO MARINA WIJLAARS PRESIDENT’s REPORT As some of you will be aware the house in front of the NSC in Marshland Road has been demolished and soon we will have a smoother drive way access to the clubrooms. Also the dance-floor has had a face lift and is shining and smooth. This has been a dusty job and thanks must go to Janice and Arie Geerlofs for doing an amazing job cleaning all the dust away. Now all we need is some people to organise some dances. Who would come to attend an afternoon dance? Do you want to organise such an event? There are two events in the pipeline which need your attention: 50th Jubilee of the Netherlands Society Christchurch. This will happen next year and there is need of a subcommittee to plan the celebration. We would like the event to take place in October 2015. If you have ideas or want to support this initiative, please, phone Olga at 325 2724. Afternoon tea for ex committee members. The committee would like to bring past committee members together for an afternoon. We realise that some people may no longer be a member or their contact details are no longer valid therefore we need your help to check your network and inform us to ensure all these people can be contacted. Royal Netherlands Embassy His Excellency, the Ambassador, Mr Arie van der Wiel and his wife, Mrs Mathilde van der Wiel-van Heugten, are leaving New Zealand. The NSC will organise an afternoon to give the NSC members a chance to say goodbye. More information regarding this event in this Echo. Please do not forget to forward nominations for new committee members and/or any remits, you might want tabled during the AGM, before 20 May 2014. ____________ SHARP DROP IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENT DEATHS IN THE NETHERLANDS In total 570 people died in traffic accidents last year, a drop of 80 from 2012, the national statistics office CBS announced on April 24 last. Fewer car passengers, cyclists and pedestrians were killed but there was a rise in the death rate among moped and mobile scooter users. The number of road accident deaths has almost halved since in the beginning of this century, when the total was around 1,100, news agency ANP said. Chocolate eggs were hidden by the Bunny but the children managed to find them all! Lovely colouring-in pictures were rewarded with some more chocolate prizes. First prize for the 3 - 6 year olds went to Nikita First prize for the 7 - 10 year olds was picked up by Kate First prize for the 11-12 year olds was awarded to Jack The Easter Bunny was very impressed with all entries (12) but a bit disappointed that not more pictures had been received. A very special prize for the smallest entrant went to ‘nearly’ 2 year old Sophia Next Easter there will be many more, we have promised him. All children who did sent in a picture received a prize. Photographs were supplied by Sharon Alabaster Page 6 May 2014 ECHO LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Farewell to a bridge club After eight years being involved with the Bridge Club I have decided to resign. I took over (or was talked into it) from Jan van Dijk. Jan was already very ill and could not carry on. He passed away while still a committee member of the NSC. While in the committee of the Bridge Club I was in charge of the social side, which I did with pleasure; I did the financial business and took the responsibility to lock up the Clubrooms after the game. I could not have done al these things without the help of my loyal partner, Jean Blik, the playing director; my husband, Carsten, who is in charge of all Bridge matters and Marius Wunderink helped me with the dishes. Many more gave a hand to make things run smoothly. I like to thank the NSC for the use of the hall and its facilities therefore we could survive on only $2.00 table fees. The Bridge Club’s true gentleman Johnny Kieft donated $500.00 towards the last Christmas break up. With the amount we had left over we could have an Easter party on 11 April. Thank you so much on behalf of the members, Johnny! And then there is Henk Roelink, our baker friend, who donated many times nice afternoon-tea delicacies! But now the time has come for me to say goodbye. I have some lovely memories from my time with the Bridge Club. I really hope that the people who take over from me will have the same support. I wish you all well! Regards, Truus Ouwerkerk ___________ It is an unfortunate fact that changes do take place over a period of time of which no one has control. So also with our Bridge Club. We do have a few problems: One of which is the traffic on Marshland Road. It is almost impossible and very dangerous to make a right-hand turn leaving the Everglades from 4 o’clock onwards. It has got to the point where people do not like to come anymore. Being a small club we can’t afford to loose any members. To make matters worse winter is approaching. Some members will spend time on the Gold Coast or in Fiji also causing a dwindling membership. Truus Ouwerkerk has resigned after many years of looking after social matters and organising afternoon tea. At this point Marius Wunderink and I have decided to box on and see what happens. To come back to Marshland Road: What options do we have? One suggestion was to start early, at 10.30am but then we encroach on the Rummycuppers. Someone else suggested Sunday afternoon. A third person mentioned Monday starting at 10.30am to beat the traffic. Any other suggestions? Whatever we come up with it has to tie in with the activities of the other users of the premises. Our group of volunteers have become very small with only four active members at the moment. Currently we visit 9 people on a regular basis. Voor al het genot dat Piet bezorgd heeft aan de voetbal- en muziekliefhebbers en de vele videos die hij deelde met de leden van de NSC verdient hij zeker een plaatsje in onze Echo. Het was nooit teveel voor hem en hij straalde zelf van geluk als hij iedereen zag genieten. De aanwezigheid van zo vele leden op zijn uitvaart getuigde van hun dankbaarheid. Moge hij rusten in vrede. Going through the official papers I noticed that my battalion (434) was at last departing for New Guinea. Before leaving, the battalion would parade through Padang. This was my chance for a secret farewell! (By reading through all this official mail you got to know these kind of things.) The last day arrived, there they were marching along. In front of the troops was the jeep with the OC with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. All important military men were standing on a viewing platform. The OC of U Brigade (Padang) took the salute. The troops got closer and the Battalion Commander got ready to leave the jeep to present the troops to the Brigadier. However in his exitement he had forgotten that a jeep has got a lip of metal on the inside, which hooks on your boots. As I had found out many times before if you forget it makes you fall flat on your face. So there was my ex-boss laying sprawled on the street of Padang. What a thing to remember! Farewell!!! My OC told me one day that he would show some Siliwangi officers what would be left and would be theirs after we pulled out. It would cost them nothing and I had to come along to take notes. Even I was quite amazed what I saw. There was a hall full of steel helmets. The OC told the Indonesians that those helmets would be far too large. But that did not have to be a problem for all they had to do was drill two holes in the helmets and they would still be able to see. The OC thought this was a hell of a joke (and so did I) but not in the eyes of the Dutch Commission, who had organised the hand-over. So the OC got into serious trouble for making this remark, I heard later. Keep your powder dry! Het Dutch ‘n’ Deli Team Page 10 May 2014 ECHO KLAVERJAS CLUB ‘ONS GENOEGEN’ Pasen is weer voorbij en het Easter Tournament is ook weer goed afgelopen, iedereen tevreden en daar gaat het toch maar om, nietwaar? Twee en dertig spelers, zo’n acht tafels en er was natuurlijk een score-keeper, een voornaam persoon, die zorgt voor de eind puntenstand en ook nog eens kan inspringen als er iemand uitvalt. De stand was als volgt: 1. Theo van Vuuren, 10,584; 2. Jan van de Splinter, 10,079; 3. Wim Slot, 10,030. De Paas Haas bracht nog even een zakje snoep voor iedereen en zo gingen we weer heel tevreden naar huis. Het volgende tournament vindt plaats op Zaterdag, 31 Mei, Queens Birthday Weekend. Laat het ons weten als je ook weer van de partij wilt zijn. Afgelopen 1 April mochten we niet op de dansvloer van de Everglades lopen, er waren stoelen rond de houten dansvloer gezet. Het was maar goed dat de vernis al droog was anders waren er toch wel wat voetstapjes te zien geweest. Want ja, het bloed kruipt nu eenmaal waar het niet gaan kan, daar zijn we mensen voor. Wie probeerde vroeger nou niet een bankje uit waarop stond ‘natte verf’? Er werd nog even ‘Lang Zal Ze Leven’ voor Beb van Polanen gezongen en als dank kregen we een lekker stukje taart. De uitslagen op 1 April waren: 1. Wim de Winter, 5,457; 2. Leni Nelis, 5,243; Hermien van Lieshout, 5,156. En op 15 April was de stand als volgt: 1. Koos van Nieuwkerk, 5,287; 2. Richard van Lindt, 5,207; 3. Henk Ritstier, 5,045. Alle Klaverjassers krijgen de hartelijke groeten van Anna Fekkes, die op vakantie is in Auckland. Dit is het dan weer, blijf gezond en veel plezier met het spel van het leven! Wim YOUTH OF YESTERDAY On 11 April the YOY gathering had to move to the Golfers’ hall as the dancefloor had been sanded and varnished. Dust for miles and the smell of wet varnish was very strong so we were lucky we were allowed to use the other room. There was a great crowd that day and we had a visit of the Easter Bunny, who brought sweets for everyone. On Friday, 18 April, we were quite surprised that in spite of the bad weather there were still 15 people in attendance. The Easter Bunny was there again and found some more Easter eggs to hand out to everyone. So you see you don’t have to be bored just come and join us! The coffee is always hot!!! Tini May 2014 Page 11 ECHO The continuation of Tonny van der Velden’s epic journey on ss ‘Zuiderkruis’ to New Zealand taking place from 10 December 1953 - 17 January 1954. Dinsdag, 15 december: Vandaag mijn zusje Jo’s verjaardag. De eerste die ik moet missen van de familie. De gebruikelijke mis om 8 uur; daarna de Engelse lessen en verder niet veel meer dan van het boven-dek naar beneden, van voor naar achter en omgekeerd. Wat kaart gespeeld, kaarten en brieven geschreven met veel moeite om er iets behoorlijks van te maken vanwege het steeds maar schokken en dreunen van de boot, waarschijnlijk de motoren van het schip. We passeren Algiers in Afrika; bergen rook en pijpjes te zien, waarschijnlijk vanuit de hutjes die tegen de berghellingen gebouwd zijn; ik kan ze niet zien. Ook passeren wij op afstand de eerste Nederlandse boot van de Maatschappij Nederland. De vlag werd gehesen ten teken van een groet, maar denkelijk zijn we niet opgevallen. Onder het genot van een glaasje sherry, ter ere van mijn zuster’s verjaardag, ga ik naar bed en is er weer een dag om. Woensdag, 16 december Kon niet goed uit mijn bed komen vanmorgen vanwege een onrustige nacht, heel slecht geslapen. Aag kwam me al halen voor de kerk, maar ik sliep nog rustig. Moest me ontzettend haasten om nog op tijd aan tafel te komen. Na de Engelse les hadden we sloepen oefening en moesten we met onze zwemvesten aan op het dek verschijnen bij onze sloep (met het geluksnummer zeven). Binnen vijf minuten waren we weer terug in onze hut, heel even kijken of onze zwemvesten goed vast zaten en klaar. Daarna een kleine vergadering voor het een en ander te doen met Kerstmis. Ben benieuwd wat het worden zal. Het gebruikelijke officiers petje en slaapwandelen is mijn bijdrage voor die avond. In de middag niet veel gedaan, alleen voel ik me een beetje akelig, duizelig, 100 procent ben je niet zo gauw aan boord. Nog vlug even een rok en blouse gestreken voor de komende dansavond. Het dansen ging vrij goed, was reuze leuk. Precies elf uur ging het tapijt weer op de vloer en was het afgelopen met de danspret. Nog wat nagekaart en toen onder de wol. We voeren vandaag voorbij Pantelleria, Tunesia en Malta. Voor het eerst de klok een half uur vooruit gezet om twaalf uur ‘s-nachts. Donderdag, 17 december Er is een storm opgestoken vannacht, vreselijk en daarna weer zeeziekte. Tot een uur of een op bed gelegen en toen zo gammel mogelijk proberen op te staan en het vol te houden. De hele middag verder maar gezeten in de frisse lucht buiten en wat gelezen. Om half zeven onder het eten weer vlug weg moeten hollen, het was al weer mis. Om een uur of negen er nog even uitgekropen om me aan te kleden. Aag kwam me halen, ben op een holletje met haar naar de bar gelopen om een glaasje te drinken (als medicijn tegen de zeeziekte) en daarna weer vlug naar bed. De klok weer een half uur vooruit gezet, dat gaat nu wel regelmatig door, denk ik. Vandaag voeren we in de Middelandse Zee. Vrijdag, 18 december Slecht geslapen vanwege de kou. Een Middelandse Zee klimaat....maar ik lag te rillen in mijn bed. Mijn vest bracht uitkomst en zodoende sliep ik toch nog wat. Maar weer eens een keer in bed moeten blijven tot een uur of een, op droog brood en een appel. Heerlijke reis, zoiets is om nooit meer te vergeten! ‘s-Middags weer eens geprobeerd en ja wel hoor: Het ging, al viel het niet mee. ‘s-Avonds aan tafel weer hollen om weg te komen en was net op tijd om de buit in mijn hut te brengen. Vandaag stoomden we verder door de Middelandse Zee tot op de hoogte van Kreta. Zaterdag, 19 december Port Said in zicht. Hutten afsluiten voor de Arabieren, die met hun koopwaren aan boord komen. Machtig gezicht en een heerlijk gevoel in het vooruitzicht als je zo staat te popelen om weer eens vaste grond onder je voeten te voelen. Er komt een loods aan boord en het duurt nog even voordat we aan wal mogen. Paspoorten inleveren, die we tegen afgifte van het daarvoor gekregen bewijsje ‘s-avonds weer terug kunnen krijgen. We krijgen verlof van 1 uur tot 10 uur ‘s-avonds en vliegen de boot af. Arm Port Said! Het begint al met regen. Vies, vuil, modderig en smerig ziet alles er uit, zowel de huizen als de mensen. Van alle kanten schreeuwen en lopen ze je na. Page 12 May 2014 ECHO “Kopen, kopen....alles voor niets.....schinkie voor schinkie” Het laatste betekent ruilen voor sigaretten. Op den duur wordt je er gek van, de een is nog niet weg of de andere komt er weer aan. Ons hele groepje van Limburgers; Brabanders en Amsterdammers (Aag) blijft bij elkaar. Hoe de mensen er bij lopen is niet voor te stellen, allerlei vodden, zwart, wit en allerhande kleuren maar eigenlijk is alles zwart. Ook zagen we nog gesluierde vrouwen, met een of twee ogen bedekt en soms met iets op de neus bengelend, naar gelang getrouwd of verloofd. Aan boord gingen wij een kop koffie drinken want 60 cent voor een klein kopje koffie vonden de arme emigranten wat te veel. Ik was allang blij want had het niet begrepen op die koffie, waar het water misschien niet eens goed gekookt van was. Toen we daarna gegeten hadden gingen we onze vrije tijd weer benutten en dus de wal weer op. Ik heb nog een paar souveniers gekocht en onder bewaking van politie agenten gingen we weer terug naar ons drijvend hotel. Deze bewaking hebben we trouwens de hele middag gehad en tevens waarschuwingen om bepaalde stads gedeeltes niet in te gaan. Kinderen mochten niet op de foto, die werden dan door een of andere kerel weg gejaagd of uit elkaar gedreven. Het was een rare beweging. Over het algemeen zag je niets dan vies uitziende mannen in de diverse kroegen of krotten, practisch geen vrouwen. Toen we terug aan boord gingen waren we doodmoe van het slenteren. Gelukkig dat die politie agenten er waren om ons te bewaken anders waren we misschien helemaal niet meer terug gekomen. Jammer dat de boot ‘s-avonds in het donker weg voer zodoende zagen we niet veel meer van de omstreken van Port Said. Zondag, 20 december Heb me vanmorgen eens netjes aangekleed en had daarbij dus weer eens een echt ‘zondags gevoel’. Om half tien naar de hoogmis geweest. ‘s-MIddags eerst wat aan dek gezeten en een kaartje gelegd, waar de middag mee gevuld was. ‘s-Avonds klassieke muziek, waar we allemaal, het hele stel, ernstig naar hebben zitten luisteren. Daarna nog een half uurtje nakaarten en het is weer tijd om naar de hut te trekken en in bed te duiken. Vandaag voeren we door het Suez Kanaal en passeerden dus Suez. Om te zien een geweldige stad, prachtig om zo te zien. Jammer dat we niet aan wal konden. Voor het eerst zagen we op een afstand de kamelen in de woestijn vandaag. Aan boord ss ‘Zuiderkruis’ “Full speed ahead!” door Tonny van der Velden May 2014 Page 13 ECHO LETTERS TO THE MEMBERS VIA THE EDITOR When the Society first started in Christchurch the membership grew rapidly due to the large numbers of immigrants, especially in the 1950’s and ‘60’s, since those years and more recently the numbers have rapidly decreased as the years pass by. The age base of our membership has naturally matured somewhat with many in the 70’s and beyond. Our children and grandchildren have now grown up as Kiwi’s and have less of a need or desire to be active in the Society. This coupled with very few new immigrants it has become increasingly difficult to attract new and younger members. I therefore believe we have to be mindful of the future of our Netherlands Society in Christchurch over the mid and long term. We have amassed considerable assets if the Society were ever to cease functioning. At present I believe that at least 80% of the current membership has no knowledge of what the position may be. Could I therefore, please, ask the committee to have available for the next Annual General Meeting a copy of any recorded detail of what has been set down. Even though this may not occur in our time but perhaps at some time in the future, as the current committee and acting as prudent managers of our assets, I believe that it is important that a plan is in place and documented accordingly. Leo van ‘t Veen ____________ PRESIDENT’S RESPONSE The question of how the asset will be managed in the event of the dissolution of the NSC has been raised in the past. In 2006 the constitution was brought up to date. In this process a discussion paper presented to a special meeting in March and this question was raised, in June at a Special General Meeting an additional clause was added to the Objects of the Society, 3.1 (g) Without in any way limiting the power of the Society to manage its assets in the best way possible at any particular time, and to maintain and, if possible retain, the Everglades as a memorial to the early Dutch migrants who worked hard to establish the valuable asset that the Everglades now represents. We have other Objects in this part of our constitution e.g. to keep alive Dutch traditions, maintain cultural ties, foster feelings of friendship and good understanding between persons of Dutch descent and all nationalities, organise meetings, socials and events for members and support affiliated bodies, etc. This is important as in 2009 our winding-up clause was replaced with 18.2 ‘If any property must be used to further the purpose of the organisation and in accordance with its rules.’ The rules can be changed via way of a remit to an Annual General Meeting or a Special General Meeting. At this stage there is an Object of the Society, that the Everglades be retained as a memorial, in 2006 this decision was not unanimous. To ensure that the asset remains as a permanent memorial other options for the property were explored, as far as I am aware none of these options were put forward to an AGM as a remit for discussion and a decision. I welcome suggestions and support on how to achieve more clarity and certainty and other thoughts people have.
