The Body as Subject
En tus manos tienes una trinchera construida por 12
imágenes de mujeres bolivianas. Mujeres que a través del
lente de la fotógrafa Wara Vargas han transformado su
corporalidad reivindicando el cuerpo femenino como sujeto
de sus propios deseos y placeres.
In your hands you have a collection made up of 12 images
of Bolivian women. Women, who, through the lens of
photographer Wara Vargas, have transformed their
corporeality into a political space, reclaiming the female body
as the subject of their own desires and pleasures.
La mujer artista, la andina, la transgénero; la afroboliviana,
la madre, la que se niega a seguir los cánones impuestos
al cuerpo femenino… Una diversidad de identidades se
plasman en este calendario que va a contramano de las
prácticas cotidianas que banalizan, cosifican y condenan a la
mujer a representar estándares de belleza marcados por los
deseos y consumos masculinos.
The woman artist, the Andean, the transgendered; the AfroBolivian, the mother who refuses to follow the rules imposed
on the female body... A diversity of identities are reflected
in this calendar that runs counter to the daily practices that
trivialize, objectify and condemn women to represent beauty
standards set by male desires and consumption.
Cada imagen plasmada en este calendario ha sido parte de
un proceso que ha requerido que las 12 mujeres retratadas
realicen una exploración personal y colectiva sobre la
autonomía de su propio cuerpo, sus placeres y deseos.
El resultado de esas reflexiones se refuerza en los textos que
acompañan cada imagen y que han sido escritos por cada
una de ellas.
Desde la oficina regional de Hivos en Sud América hemos
encontrado en las expresiones artísticas una herramienta
fundamental para impulsar la reflexión en torno a estas
temáticas. El 2013 publicamos un calendario que celebra
la emancipación de las diversidades sexuales y de género.
Fotógrafas y fotógrafos, escritoras y escritores de distintos
puntos del planeta sumaron su talento en defensa de los
movimientos LGBT.
Para este 2014 queremos invitarte a celebrar cada día del
año los cuerpos-políticos de las mujeres que se reúsan a ser
objeto sexual de otros expresando su corporalidad.
Each image captured in this calendar has been part of a
process that required the 12 women portrayed to make a
personal and collective exploration of the autonomy of their
own bodies, their pleasures and desires. The result of these
reflections is reinforced in the texts that accompany each
image, written by each of them.
Here at Hivos’ regional office in South America, we have
found, in these artistic expressions, a fundamental tool to
promote reflection on these themes. In 2013 we published a
calendar that celebrates the emancipation of sexual diversity
and gender. Photographers and writers, both male and
female, from across the world joined their talents in defense
of the LGBT movement.
In 2014 we invite you to celebrate the political-bodies of
women, who refuse to be others’ sexual objects, expressing
their corporeality - every day of the year.

La fotógrafa
Wara Vargas fue ganadora en tres años consecutivos del
fondo concursadle de periodismo de investigación de la
Fundación UNIR. Expuso, entre otros, en la Fotoausstellung
Indigene Gestalten Stadte Neu (Alemania). Ganó el
segundo lugar en la categoría Fotoperiodismo, del Premio
Latinoamericano de Fotografía.
Actualmente trabaja en el periódico boliviano
La Razón.
The photographer
Wara Vargas has won the Concursable Fund for
Investigative Journalism from the UNIR Foundation for
three consecutive years. Presented, among others, in Neu
Stadte Fotoausstellung Gestalts Indigene (Germany). She
won second place in the photojournalism category of the
Latin American Photography Awards. She currently works
for the Bolivian newspaper, “La Razón”.
