Cyclists are allowed to use the Rosokutai (side strips) only when they do not get in the way of pedestrians. (Note 2) Cyclists are permitted to use side walks only when any of the followings apply. (1) Street signs indicate that the sidewalk is for both pedestrians and cyclists. (2) Cyclists are children less than 13 years old/senior citizens 70 years or older/have physical disabilities. (3) Road conditions such as construction, etc. make it necessary for cyclists to use the sidewalk. *Rosokutai refers to the area separated by white line from the road either with or without sidewalks.
