
Reported Speech



Speech that is reported without using the
exact words of the speaker. Sometimes
called ‘indirect speech.’
e.g. Tom said that he was feeling sick.
Direct Speech


Speech that is written using the exact words
of the speaker, without any changes.
e.g. Tom said, “I’m feeling sick.”
Exercise 1
(1) Liz (said/talked/told), “I will do that
job.”
⇒ said
(2) I (said/talked/asked) him to open the
door.
⇒ asked
(3) Our boss (said/told/talked) us to
reach the goal.
⇒ told
Exercise 2
(1) 彼は私に言った。「今、何時ですか」

⇒ He said to me, “What time is it now?”
(2) ガリレオ・ガリレイは地球が太陽の周りを回っ
ていると言った。
Galileo [the earth the sun around goes that
said].
⇒ Galileo Galilei said that the earth goes
round the sun.
(3) 審判は選手にその場から退場するように命じ
た。
The umpire [the player the filed to leave
ordered].
⇒ The umpire ordered the player to leave
the field.
(4) チャールズはダイアナに言った。「どうか結婚
してほしい」
Charles [Diana to said please me marry].”
⇒ Charles said to Diana, “Please marry
me.”
(5) リサのお父さんがリサに、次の日曜日は暇か
どうか尋ねた。
Her father [Lisa the next Sunday free if would
be asked she].
⇒ Her father asked Lisa if she would be
free the next Sunday.
(6) 手品師が観客に箱の中には何が入っている
か尋ねた。
The magician [the audience the box in what
was asked].
⇒ The magician asked the audience what
was in the box.
What Did He Say?
A: I forgot to tell you. Marvin called
yesterday.
B: Really? What did he say?
A: He said (that)* he thought he was
falling in love with me.
