Brittany Sharnsky ha sido nombrada la directora del Centro de
Negocios para Mujeres de LiftFund, la organización sin fines
de lucro que proporciona crédito
y servicios a pequeños negocios

Celebrate Music SA! gives local musicians a voice

Celebrate Music SA! kicks off
this May with a citywide initiative
that puts the spotlight on the unsung
heroes of local music in the San
Antonio community.
Whether you’re a mariachi who
serenades locals and tourists along
the River Walk, a music educator
for school bands, or even part of a
local drum circle- this month is all
about you. The campaign overlaps
with San Antonio’s Local Music
Week (May 17-23), confirming the
importance of music education and
recognition of local artists.
“We’re basically here to tell the
story of the fabric that makes up our
musical community,” Ray Colao, the
initiative’s co-creator said. “People
may be more familiar with the people
who play rock live music venues,
but in reality the music community
is made up of the people you hardly
ever see.”
The initiative has already created
an online calendar of events and
chance to give back to their community by donating to music education
non-profits like the Youth Orchestras
of San Antonio, the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio and the Network
for Young Artists.
The campaign also serves as a
precursor to future citywide music
events, including the first San Antonio Music Conference this October.
“This campaign is meant as a first
step in that direction,” Colao said.
“All those folks that participate now
will be part of the audience this fall.”
The conference will give the San
Antonio music community access
to panelists, publishers and industry
members they wouldn’t usually
interact with. Colao hopes that the
programs will help aspiring and
professional artists develop their
craft and receive recognition for their
hard work.

Summer Youth Program registration for
recreation-themed activities and more!

Children are invited to participate in the Parks and Recreation
Department’s Summer Youth
Program which offers eight weeks
of recreation-themed activities,
enrichment activities and the opportunity to make new friends.
Parents may register their children
on Saturday, May 2, and Saturday,
May 9. The program will be offered
at more than 35 school sites and at
the Woodlawn Lake Park Gym.
The Summer Youth Program
keeps participants active by en-
gaging them in a variety of safe,
supervised, age appropriate activities such as traditional sports,
craft projects, active games, art
exploration, fitness and nutrition, as
well as reading, math and science
enrichment activities. Youth, ages
six to 12, are invited to attend at
school sites. The Summer Youth
Program runs June 15 through
August 7, Monday through Friday,
from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Lunch
and an afternoon snack are included
through the Summer Food Service
Program.
School site registration will be
held from 8 a.m. to noon on Satur-
day, May 2, at Hamilton Community Center, 10700 Nacogdoches;
Melendrez Community Center,
5919 W. Commerce; and South
Side Lions Community Center,
3100 Hiawatha. On May 9, registration will be held from 8 a.m.
to noon at Ron Darner Parks and
Recreation Headquarters, 5800
Old Hwy. 90 W.; Ramirez Community Center, 1011 Gillette; and
Copernicus Community Center,
5003 Lord Rd. The park curfew of
11 p.m. to 5 a.m. will be enforced
for patron safety.

la nueva batalla feminista de EE.UU.

dólar de Estados Unidos, donde
se ha declarado una animada
batalla feminista para acabar con
esa desigualdad de género tan
pecuniaria.
Los siete billetes de curso
legal en el país muestran en su
anverso a los presidentes George
Washington (1 dólar), Thomas
Jefferson (2 dólares), Abraham
Lincoln (5 dólares), Andrew
Jackson (20 dólares) y Ulysses
S. Grant (50 dólares), así como
al primer secretario del Tesoro,
Alexander Hamilton (10 dólares)
y uno de los padres fundadores
de EE.UU., Benjamin Franklin
(100 dólares).
Sin embargo, ninguna de las
grandes mujeres que también
ha dado Estados Unidos logra
reunir, a ojos del Departamento
del Tesoro, méritos suficientes
para que su retrato figure en los
billetes.
Quizás no venga mal recordar
que el Tesoro, institución responsable de la emisión de moneda,
ha estado siempre dirigido por
un hombre en sus 225 años de
historia.
Contra el agravio comparativo
de los dólares, la empresaria
neoyorquina Barbara Ortiz fundó
en 2014 la organización feminis
ta “Women on 20’s” (“Mujeres
en los billetes de veinte”), para
poder convencer al presidente,
Barack Obama de que “ha llegado la hora de poner la cara de
una mujer en el papel moneda”
del país.
Con pocos recursos pero mucho
entusiasmo, la organización ha
lanzado este año una campaña en
Internet para elegir a una mujer
que sustituya a Andrew Jackson en el billete de 20 dólares,
pendient e de rediseño como
requisito técnico para combatir
las falsificaciones.
“Women on 20’s” cree también
que Jackson, séptimo presidente
de EE.UU., debe abandonar el
“twenty”, denominación popular
de su billete, porque firmó la ley
de 1830 que provocó la muerte
de miles de nativos americanos
en su traslado forzoso al oeste
del país, en una traumática odisea
conocida como “El sendero de las
lágrimas”.
A favor de Jackson -fundador
del Partido Demócrata- tampoco
juega la contradicción entre su
presencia en el “twenty”, donde
aparece en un retrato con pelo
algo alborotado desde 1928, y su
vehemente oposición a la circulación del papel moneda.
Con fin, pues, de reemplazar a
Andrew Jackson, la organización
propone escoger a una de las
cuatro mujeres preseleccionadas
como candidatas, de modo que
se alcancen los 100,000 votos
necesarios, como mínimo, para
formular una petición popular a

Teens who regularly play soccer are more focused
EFE - A direct correlation
was found between teens who
play soccer and their ability to
maintain focus, the Catholic
University of Valencia and the
Granada Center for Brain, Mind
and Behavior Research, or Cimcyc, revealed in a recent study.
The University of Granada,
which oversees Cimcyc, announced on Tuesday the findings
of a study that sampled 75 male
and female adolescents, half of
whom played soccer regularly.
The subjects took questionnaires and performed tests to
determine their aerobic fitness,
in addition to undergoing a task
specifically designed to assess
alertness and sustained attention.
The results showed that the
soccer players had better aerobic
fitness than those who did not
play, unsurprisingly, but more
importantly, they had better reaction times in the alertness task,
“which shows a better ability
to maintain focused attention,”
Daniel Sanabria, a Cimcyc researcher and co-author of the
study, discussed.

uniéndonos al “otro” con lazos
que hermanan sin distinciones ni
prejuicios, poniendo en práctica
la asertividad que hace que la comunicación fluya, construyendo
puentes por los que circulan las
emociones”.
“Hay situaciones en las que un
abrazo dice más que mil palabras,
aquellas en las que la carga emocional es muy intensa. Para expresar
una gran alegría, compartir una
celebración, consolar a una persona
doliente, transmitir un estímulo de
aliento, los abrazos resultan muy
locuaces”, indica Barbery.
Consejos para abrazarnos
mejor
Sobre cómo dar un abrazo de
forma natural y desinhibida, la
experta indica: “es un proceso
gradual que comienza en nuestro
interior, escuchándonos, viéndonos y percibiéndonos como seres
únicos, irrepetibles, merecedores
de respeto, capaces y dispuestos
al intercambio de afecto”.
Barbery dice que, para abrazar
mejor “hay que prestar atención
al lenguaje del diálogo interior,
sustituir los “debo y tengo que”,
por los más eficientes “quiero,
decido y elijo” e invitarnos a nosotros mismos gentilmente a vivir
una experiencia gratificante, y a
reivindicar el poder terapéutico de
los abrazos”.
Barbery sugiere practicar estos
ejercicios “para abrazar mejor”:
1. Es conveniente aflojar el cuer
po de forma consciente llevando la
atención a cada una de sus partes,
lenta y pausadamente, aflojándolas
y relajándolas, especialmente las
zonas del cuello, espalda, brazos
y caderas.
2. Sonriente, vaya acompañando
este proceso con ejercicios de
respiración, con inhalaciones profundas y exhalaciones lentamente
reguladas.
3. Disponer de una música suave
y un perfume ambientador le
ayudarán a sintonizar con las emociones y sentimientos que experimenta abrazando.
4. Visualice en su mente un lugar
ideal que le proporcione bienestar,
por ejemplo un espacio abierto en
contacto con la naturaleza, dote a
esta visualización de una potente
carga sensorial haciéndola lo más
vívida posible y, desde allí, dispóngase a experimentar los beneficios
terapéuticos del abrazo.
5. Si está a solas, procure rodearse a sí mismo con los brazos, y
apoyar la cabeza sobre un hombro,
para dejarse “fluir”.
6. Si está en compañía de alguien, el respeto, el consentimiento
mutuo y disposición del grupo
son imprescindibles. Un buen comienzo para llegar al abrazo puede
ser el contacto visual y pasar de la
mirada al reconocimiento del otro,
procurando ponerse emocionalmente en su lugar y verlo como una
parte integral de nosotros mismos.

Countdown to the May 9 elections is underway

the largest number of votes cast
at the Wonderland of the Americas at Crossroads. The total votes
cast were 335.
Over the next six days or

precincts in Bexar County, 53
political subdivisions, 20 Independent School Districts, 29
Cities and four Military Installations (Lackland AFB, Ft. Sam
Houston, Brooks City-Base, and
Randolph AFB).
Early Voting began Monday,
April 27, and ends Tuesday, May
5. There are a total of 36 voting
sites across Bexar County and
polls are open from 8 a.m. to 6
p.m. through Friday.
Beginning Saturday, May 2,
and continuing Monday, May 4
and Tuesday May 5, those sites
will be opened 12 hours, from 8
a.m. to 8 p.m.
The ballot is a big one. The
Harlandale, Judson, Northside,
San Antonio and Southside Independent School Districts are on
it. While most deal with the election of trustees, Harlandale has
a bond proposal of almost $65
million for its voters to consider.
The major ballot items are the
San Antonio City Council elections and the question of whether
council members and the mayor
will receive a yearly salary. If
the pay issue is approved, council members would receive a salary of $45,722 a year. The mayor
would be paid $61,725 annually.
Another item for consideration
is whether the city charter should
be amended to allow the public
to vote on any light rail or street
car proposal.
Callanen suggests that you

they will run a design competition among the most prominent

“I think you’re going to see a
really exciting shape to this new
building, one that you’re not going to forget,” Weston said. “I’m
confident it’s something we will all
be proud of.”
He added that ideally it will be
the tallest building downtown, but
not a requirement for the design
selected.
Evans mentioned it doesn’t
necessarily have to be the tallest
building to be iconic.
“Our building in Austin is not
the tallest building but it is still the
most recognized with many buildings being much taller, so when we
talk about iconic, let’s not forget
that,” Evans added.
A public hearing on the proposal
is scheduled for May 28 at 9 a.m.

to know how we are revitalizing

my two years on city council
and the focus of my campaign,

choose to attack and lie about

is spreading a lie about funding for the Witte Museum. He
says that I took $9 million away
from streets and sidewalks and
gave it to the museum, but
that couldn’t be more untrue.
Not one dollar from the city’s
general fund has been spent on
the Witte, and we have over
$100 million in infrastructure
projects underway or scheduled
in District 3. He’s counting on
you not to know that he is lying.
I am counting on you to know
the truth.
What candidates who attack
and lie are really doing is hiding
their own problems. They hope
that if they can confuse voters
enough, you won’t be able to
tell a fact from a lie. In the case
of this same opponent who is
attacking me now, the truth is
much more interesting than his
made up stories. He hopes that
you won’t notice that he is only
23 years old and that he worked
for me and was fired for not
showing up for work.
If you ask me, that explains
the lies and negative campaigning that he has engaged in. You
have an important decision to
make regarding the direction
we take as a community. As
you think about who to support in the election, think about
what kind of person you want
working for you at City Hall.
Do you want someone who
was fired from a job where he
could help residents but didn’t
bother to show up? Do you
want someone who is spreading
lies, and trying to divide us?
Someone who is deliberately
trying to confuse you to hide the
facts? Or do you want someone
who focus on this issues, bring
people together, and make your
neighborhood an even better
place to live?

Cardinal Óscar Rodríguez Maradiaga, the progressive archbishop of
Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and a top
advisor to Pope Francis, visited San
Antonio on Monday to honor the
centennial of Assumption Seminary,
which has produced priests for 100
years.
Cardinal Rodriguez also used the
visit to introduce some of the biggest
issues facing the Catholic Church in
the 21st century, including migration
and the drug and gang violence facing
Central America.
“I am convinced that the big flood
you got last year was not an innocent
flood,” Rodriguez said of the 2014
migrant surge to the United States. “I
am convinced that this was organized
by the drug lords.”
Rodriguez said that the number
of smugglers distracted law enforcement, allowing traffickers to move
drugs over the border.
During the news briefing, Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller discussed the strong working relation-
ship between Tegucigalpa and San
Antonio that has existed since Hurricane Mitch struck Honduras in 1998.
Poverty still influences the large
numbers of families and young people
who leave their countries in search of
a better life, but it is also influenced
by the rise of gangs, or maras in
countries like Honduras, where people
face gang retaliation when they don’t
follow orders.
Rodriguez acknowledged the universal struggles of migrants throughout the world who put themselves and
their children in harm’s way for the
promise of a better life, but instead
find pain, loss or even death.
“We must not be indifferent,”
Cardinal Rodriguez said. “We must
not tolerate the globalization of indifference.”
The cardinal said Pope Francis
would shed more light on migration
issues and gang violence this fall,
when he visits the United States to
speak before Congress.
In 2013, Rodriguez was named
leader of the eight members who
make up the Council of Cardinals,
who advise Pope Francis on the reformation of the Roman Curia (an as-
sembly who helps the Pope carry out
his global duties), and modernization
of the church itself.
The council has already tackled
issues including the importance of
family units, healthcare, and peace.
The cardinal said he was confident
in the Pope’s ability to handle the
pressing issues facing the church and
Christians throughout the world.

Edgewood ISD teaches ballroom dancing

Remember when you were in
elementary school and you were
selected to be part of a school
program that featured a dancing
segment? In my case, I was in
the fourth grade; and I was part
of a group that was taught square
dancing. Not only was I supposed
to learn how to square dance, I
also had to touch a boy’s hand –
Yuck! Anyway, week after week,
we practiced the different dance
movements until the big day arrived. Somehow, the four couples
selected to perform before our
parents, teachers and student body
survived the ordeal - and we were
not scarred for life.
Fast forward to today’s school
programs, in San Antonio the Edgewood Independent School District
is the only school district currently
teaching ballroom dancing to thirdgraders in six of its elementary
schools. Can you imagine being
nine years old and learning how
to dance the tango and merengue?
Many of us, as adults, can only
dream of trying to learn how to
execute the intricate steps of the
tango and to move our hips to the
merengue beat.
The program, Dancing with
the Children, is responsible for
ballroom dancing in the school
district, and has been in existence
in Edgewood ISD for several years
with Jorge Alonso Perez as its Executive Director.
The two dance directors who
dedicate their time to teach the
Edgewood elementary students are
Adriana Araujo Bruton and Robert
Ramirez. Ms. Bruton teaches at
Roy Cisneros, Gardendale, Henry
B. Gonzalez, Loma Park, and
Stafford Elementary Schools. Mr.
Ramirez teaches at Las Palmas
Elementary School.
If you wonder about the expertise in ballroom dancing that these
two instructors have to teach such
a program, both are professional
ballroom dancers who taught and
competed for major dance studios.
While Ms. Bruton still maintains
an independent dance business,
Mr. Ramirez retired from dance to
practice law full-time and is still
considered one of the best ballroom
dancers in San Antonio.
To participate in the dance program, students are nominated by
counselors and teachers with their
parents’ consent. Two dances are
taught each school year. The students meet one hour a week for their
dance lessons and are taught proper
dance form (dance posture and
frame), dance patterns, timing, etc.
An average of 30 students per
school participated in the dance
program for a total enrollment of
182 students this year. The group
is comprised of third graders, although there are some second and
fourth graders. Their ages range
from eight to 11 years.
This school year the dances being taught are tango and merengue.
The dances are selected by the Executive Director and the two dance
directors who determine a standard
curriculum at the beginning of the
year to ensure that all students are
taught the same material. Among
the dances that have been taught in
past years are salsa, cha-cha-cha
and swing to name a few.
Near the end of the school year,
competitions are held during the
first week of May at the participating six elementary schools with six
couples per school advancing to
the district-level competition The
elementary school competitions are
not open to the public; however, the
district-level competition is open to
the public. This year, it will be held
on Saturday, May 23, at 8:30 a.m.
at The Neighborhood Place, 3014
Rivas Street.
Students are evaluated on their
performance in the two dances and
receive a cumulative score on both
dances. They are judged on dance
posture and frame, execution of
dance patterns, timing, partnership
(leading and following), footwork,
and interpretation.
Community leaders judge the
competition and select first, second, and third place winners with
winners being awarded trophies
and gift certificates. Certificates of
participation and smaller trophies
are given to all competitors. In addition, the school of the first-place
winners gets to display the large
district championship trophy for
the coming school year.
Whereas one might question the
significance of teaching ballroom
dancing to elementary students,
the benefits of participation in such
programs go far beyond merely
learning how to dance. Dancing
classes include activities designed
to promote ease in public speaking,
express creativity, teach social responsibility, and plant the seed for
college and career plans.
As a result of participation in
these dance programs, parents and
teachers have seen marked improvement in the students’ school
attendance; self-esteem; sense of
self; discipline; pride in one’s appearance, posture, and demeanor;
greater participation and expression
in school activities; an expanded
vocabulary; and an appreciation for
teamwork.
Students interviewed for this
article say that they have a greater
appreciation for attending school
and the many benefits derived from
participating in the dance program.
This reporter was especially impressed with these students’ selfconfidence and their ability of self-
expression at such a young age.
Many of the attributes the students gain in the dancing classes
are valuable assets that will remain
with them throughout their lives.
What other school program can
offer such benefits?
The beginning of the new school
year sees new students being admitted to the dance program; and
the process is repeated again.

nos tenemos que enfocar en salir
adelante allá en Los Ángeles, por
lo que tenemos que hacer nuestro
mejor partido en los tiros al aro, así
como en la defensiva y ofensiva
lo cual nos falló durante el cuarto
partido en el que nuestro plan de
juego no resultó favorable. Se
cometieron costosos errores y no
queda más que reponernos”, afirmó
Tim Duncan, capitán y alero titular
de los Spurs.
El visitante Clippers de Los
Ángeles, en el tercer partido de la
serie a ganar 4 de 7 juegos en el
AT&T Center (viernes 24 de abril),
fue superado por San Antonio con
marcador de 100 a 73, con lo que
dieron paso a que el pentacampeón
tomara ventaja con 2 victorias por
1 derrota.
El domingo 26, Los Ángeles
cambiaron de uniforme usando el
