INFORMATION
PARCC ASSESSMENT
This spring, third through eighth
grade students across School
District 21 will take the PARCC
standardized
assessment
in
both
English/
Language Arts and Math. Both tests
will be administered to these
students in March and again in May.
The PARCC test replaces the former
assessment used throughout Illinois,
ISAT. One noticeable difference is
that this test is computer-based. This
assessment is entirely new to
students, teachers and staff, and the
state, and undoubtedly will require
patience as the new system unfolds.
NEW ADMINISTRATORS
The Board of Education approved
the hiring of Mary Werling as the
Assistant Superintendent for Finance
and Carlie
Owens as the Director of Student
Services. Both Ms. Werling and Ms.
Owens will begin in their new
positions on July 1, 2015.

Assistant
Superintendent

Business Services in Glenview
School District 34 and has previously
worked in Palatine School District
15. Ms. Owens currently serves as

psychologist in Skokie.
Both administrators will bring a
diverse set of experiences and wide
range of knowledge to their new
roles in School District 21.

Promotion 2015
Our eighth grade promotion ceremony, held at Wheeling High School,
has been rescheduled to take place on Thursday, June 4, at 6:30 PM.
Parents of eighth graders will receive specific information about
promotion exercises in a special April mailing.

Holmes Summer School Information
6th Grade Orientation!
This summer, District 21 will offer a variety of enrichment courses that
span the curriculum. Usually these classes are held at Holmes Middle
School; however, due to summer construction work at Holmes, summer
school classes will be held at London Middle School in Wheeling. The
classes that will be offered are designed for students who are currently
enrolled in grades 5, 6 and 7. June sessions will run June 12 – July 2 (912:00 PM); August sessions will run August 3 - August 14 (9 - 12:00 PM.).

In addition to the summer enrichment program, we at Holmes are very
excited to offer a summer school program funded entirely by Title I. As a
result, students selected to participate in the Title I summer school
program will attend at no cost to families. Again, due to construction at
Holmes, these classes will be offered at London Middle School. The June
session will run June 15 - July 3 (8:30 – 12:00 PM) and the August
session will run from August 3 – August 14 (8:30 – 12:00 PM). The June
Title I program will focus on supporting students in reading or math. All
students participating in this program will also participate in a wellness
component. The August session, called “Jump Start to Holmes” will be
offered to incoming 6th grade students. Students selected to participate in
either Title I program will be mailed more specific enrollment materials.

HMS Jazz Ensemble Performs in Peoria!
On January 29th, the HMS Jazz Ensemble took a trip down to Peoria,
Illinois, to perform at the 2015 Illinois Music Education Conference.
As one of only three middle school jazz bands from the entire state
selected, the Jazz Ensemble put on an outstanding performance in
front of over 150 music educators from throughout Illinois. After their
performance, many well-respected directors complimented them on
their wonderful performance, highlighting their musical maturity and
professionalism! We at Holmes are very proud of the Jazz Ensemble
for representing our school, district, and community at such a high
level! Congratulations to those students!
El 29 de enero, la HMS Jazz Ensemble fué de paseo a Peoria,
Illinois, para presentarse en la Conferencia de Educación Musical de
Illinois (IMEC). Como una de las tres bandas de jazz elegidas de todo
el estado, la Jazz Ensemble tuvo una exitosa presentación frente a
más de 150 profesores de música de Illinois. Después de la
presentación, muchos Directores de música reconocidos los
felicitaron por su excelente presentación, exaltando su madurez
musical y su profesionalismo. Nosotros en Holmes estamos muy
orgullosos de la Jazz Ensemble por representar a nuestra escuela,

EXÁMENES PARCC
Esta primavera, los estudiantes
de tercero a octavo grado en
todo el Distrito Escolar 21
tomarán la evaluación
standarizada PARCC en
Inglés/Artes del Lenguaje y en
Matemáticas. Ambas pruebas
se administrarán a estos
estudiantes en marzo y
nuevamente en mayo. La
prueba PARCC sustituye a la
anterior evaluación utilizada en
todo el Estado de Illinois, ISAT.
Una diferencia notable es que
esta prueba se realiza en la
computadora. Esta evaluación
es totalmente nueva para los
estudiantes, los profesores y el
personal y para el Estado y, sin
duda, requerirá paciencia a
medida que se desarrolla el
nuevo sistema.
NUEVAS ADMINISTRADORAS
La Junta de Educación aprobó
la contratación de Mary Werling
como Superintendente Adjunta
de Finanzas y de Carlie Owens
como Directora de Servicios
Estudiantiles. Tanto la Sra.
Werling como la Sra. Owens
comenzarán en sus nuevos
cargos el 1 de julio de 2015.
Actualmente la Sra. Werling
trabaja como Ayudante del
Superintendente de Servicios
Financieros en el Distrito
Escolar 34 en Glenview y ha
trabajado anteriormente en el
Distrito Escolar 15 en Palatine.
La Sra. Owens es actualmente
la Directora de Educación
Especial y Servicios
Estudiantiles en Diamond Lake
y anteriormente fue
psicóloga escolar en Skokie.
Ambas administradoras
aportarán diversas experiencias
y una amplia gama de
conocimientos a sus nuevos
roles en el Distrito Escolar 21.
