Reflections on the Readings Is Jesus out of sight and out of mind? We can easily be hooked on the appeal of the present moment. We witness the expansion of human ingenuity in all areas. We feel inclined to revere the present and reject the past. Today’s readings focus on this tension between yesterday and today. We are right to respect this current moment in time, but we must also retain a sense of continuity. They urge us to see that Jesus is as dynamic a force in the twenty first century as he was in the first. In finding a replacement for Judas, Peter is concerned with continuity. The Church must be rooted in the experience of Jesus. Thus the criterion for their new member is that he must have been in the company of Jesus from the time of his baptism by John, and he must have been a witness of the Resurrection. Matthias is thus seen, because of his experiences of Jesus, as a unique proclaimer of the Word and the Spirit. The author of First John sees Jesus, especially in his selfgiving, as the link between God and the disciples. The love that God manifested in sending the Son reaches perfection in the mutual love of Christians. Such love, therefore, preserves the supreme example of genuine love. The excerpt from John’s gospel is part of Jesus’ high priestly prayer. The author highlights the predicament of the disciples. Although they do not belong to the world, Jesus sends them into the world to provoke a faith response. Jesus prays that God might protect them with the divine Word. This same Word consecrates both Jesus and his followers. The modern Christian’s mandate is to make Jesus’ presence just as prevalent in the world today as he has ever been. To forgive is to enliven the reconciling Jesus; to inspire the depressed is to introduce the hope of Jesus. Most of all, when we love without counting the cost, the world knows the self-giving Jesus. We affirm that Jesus is neither out of sight nor out of mind. Our Mexican Festival was such a success we were able to make 2 principal payments on the Mortgage! Teresa coordinadora (910-200-9209) Vll DOMINGO DE PASCUA DE RESURRECCION.
