Winding River Ocean Isle Calabash Lakes Reflections on the Readings “Blood is thicker than water.” We recognize that family relationships imply family loyalty. Common history and common origins mean that we share a common bond. Today’s readings focus on the obligations and relationships formed because of blood bond. To share a common history is to live a common life. In the passage from Exodus, Moses returns from the mountain and reports God’s demands for a covenant relationship with the Chosen People. Moses obtains the people’s commitment and then symbolizes that bond linking Israel with Yahweh. He writes the terms of the relationship and erects an altar and twelve pillars. Only after reading the terms does Moses sprinkle the people with blood. The end result is the creation of a new family. The only day on which the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies of the Jerusalem Temple was the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). The high priest atoned for the sins of his household by using the blood of a bullock. He atoned for the sins of the people by sprinkling the blood of both the bullock and a goat in the Holy of Holies, thus keeping alive the bond between God and Israel. The author of Hebrews sees Good Friday as the Day of Atonement. Jesus’ own blood makes possible our entrance into the heavenly sanctuary. Today’s gospel links Jesus’ death with Israel’s great feast of liberation, the Passover. At the first Passover, the blood on the doorpost prevented the death of the firstborn. The bread broken at the Last Supper symbolizes the disciples’ sharing in Jesus’ self-offering. Drinking from the cup of his blood creates a new and dynamic common bond. The Eucharist is a precious experience. Its very nature implies a bond with God and with the community. Our destinies are intertwined. We cannot be loners for blood is a common bond. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we approach the anniversary of our nation’s independence, we express our thanksgiving to God for the blessings of our religious liberty, which guarantees that we may freely exercise our religious convictions. We do so joining other people of faith in our nation, who provide many contributions which are essential to the common good of our society. In witnessing to this priceless gift of faith, I invite you to join me for the celebration of Mass in honor of the Fortnight for Freedom on Thursday, June 25, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Raleigh, beginning at 6pm, followed by a picnic on the parish grounds hosted by the Knights of Columbus. Lo que celebramos hoy en esta fiesta del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús es un “memorial” de todo lo que dijo e hizo Jesús, la Presencia perpetua de Dios-connosotros. No es solamente un recuerdo, es la realidad de su muerte y resurrección, Este cuerpo de Jesús es un cuerpo roto por los sufrimientos de la cruz, pero es también un cuerpo resucitado y glorioso. La Sangre de Cristo es sangre derramada por nosotros Cada vez que participamos en la misa, escuchamos las palabras, “Tomen: esto es mi cuerpo” y “Esta es mi sangre, sangre de la alianza, que se derrama por todos.” Debemos tomar en serio esta invitación de Cristo. Su Cuerpo y Sangre no es un premio que se da a los mejores. Es alimento para el viaje de la vida. La Eucaristía no es el dominio de una clase privilegiada. Es la comida que se ofrece a todos los invitados. La Eucaristía no es un don reservado para los perfectos. Es la misma vida de Jesús que es una expresión del amor infinito del Padre. A veces hay gente que se cree incapaz de recibir la santa comunión. Pero hoy recordamos que nuestro Dios es capaz de amar, de perdonar y de recibir a todos en su mesa. Este don de Dios es demasiado importante para descuidarlo. Somos un pueblo en marcha hacia el Reino de Dios. Somos un pueblo alimentado por el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Dios.
