Carta de apoyo y reconocimiento a los trabajos
del Doctor Medardo Ávila Vazquez y de su equipo

Somos académicos, funcionarios y responsables científicos de doce países,
desempeñados en tareas de investigación sobre la seguridad alimentaria y las
biotecnologías, reunidos en el marco de varias redes y encuentros internacionales, entre
ellos el Foro internacional de seguridad alimentaria y agricultura sustentable
coordinado desde la Universidad del Yunnan en China.
Queremos manifestar por la presente nuestro apoyo y reconocimiento científico
respecto a los trabajos e iniciativas del Dr. Medardo Ávila Vazquez y de su equipo,
actualmente cuestionados desde la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba en Argentina por
haber llevado adelante un estudio de salud ambiental sobre la población de la localidad
de Monte Maíz (provincia de Córdoba), estudio solicitado por el alcalde de la misma
localidad y acompañado por otros grupos académicos de la Universidad Nacional de
Córdoba y de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata.
Además de las consecuencias positivas que generó el estudio para que el municipio de
Monte Maíz emprenda medidas de remediación y de prevención, afirmamos el
carácter de alto interés público y de relevancia internacional que conlleva este tipo
de estudios ambientales en el campo de la seguridad alimentaria y de la salud ambiental.
Manifestamos nuestra inquietud sobre el rechazo de parte de cualquier autoridad
académica sobre esta investigación y otros estudios co-producidos junto a la
comunidad, hoy muy necesarios frente a un creciente riesgo sanitario y tecnológico en
nuestras sociedades industriales. Como académicos, nuestra tarea y nuestras
instituciones deben estar más que nunca vinculadas al derecho de informar, de
investigar y de construir nuevas responsabilidades colectivas.

of Doctor Medardo Ávila Vazquez and his team

As academics, institution officials, scientific authorities and social leaders from twelve
countries who are engaged in research work into the question of food security and
biotechnologies, we meet at various different international conferences and networks,
such as the international food security Forum coordinated by Yunnan University in
China.
We hereby wish to express our support for, and recognition of the scientific work
and endeavours of Dr. Medardo Ávila Vazquez and his team, currently called into
question by the National University of Córdoba in Argentina for carrying out a study on
environmental health among the population of Monte Maíz (a small town in the
province of Córdoba, Argentina). This study was requested by the mayor of the town
and was accompanied by other academic groups from the National University of
Córdoba and the National University of La Plata.
In addition to the positive consequences of the study, which led the council of Monte
Maíz to implement remedial and prevention measures, we assert that this kind of
environmental study in the field of food security and environmental health is of both
great public interest and international significance. We express our concern at the
rejection by any academic authority of this investigation and of other studies
undertaken with the collaboration of the community, which, in the face of a growing
sanitary and technological risk in our industrial societies, are increasingly necessary. As
academics, our work and our institutions must, more than ever, be linked to the right
to inform, to investigate and to create new collective responsibilities.
