Pentecost Sunday
Pentecost Sunday is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church, (Acts of the Apostles 20:16 and St. Paul's First Letter to the
Corinthians 16:8). Pentecost is the 50th day after Easter (if we count both Easter and Pentecost), and it supplants the Jewish feast
of Pentecost (Shavuot), which took place 50 days after the Passover and celebrated the sealing of the Old Covenant on Mount
Sinai.
Top Ten Things to Know about Pentecost
1. Pentecost Sunday marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and disciples.
2. Pentecost Sunday occurs 50 days after Easter.
3. The Bible records the Pentecost in Acts 2:1-13.
4. Pentecost comes 10 days after the Ascension (Thursday) of Jesus.
5. Pentecost is also known as the birthday of the Church.
6. Pentecost fulfills Jesus’ promise to send the “Counselor” and “Spirit of Truth” in John 16:5-15.
7. Pentecost launches the large-scale spreading of the Gospel after Jesus’ ascension. Acts 2:41 records that after Peter spoke to
the crowd after receiving the Holy Spirit, some 3,000 people were baptized.
8. The Pentecostal movement derives its name from the New Testament event in Acts 2.
9. Jews also celebrate Pentecost, but not for the same reason as Christians. The celebration by the Jews of Pentecost is to observe
God giving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai 50 days after the Exodus. Jews also call this feast, Shavuot, meaning
“weeks.” Today for the Jews it is a celebration of the Torah (law), education, & actively choosing to participate in Jewish life.
10. In Western Churches, Pentecost is usually represented with the color red, which symbolizes the fire of the Holy Spirit.
Diocesan Priesthood
This time of year there are many anniversaries of priesthood celebrated. In fact, I was ordained on May 22, 1993. This year I
celebrated 22 years of priesthood. This Friday, Fr. Philip Wilhite pastor of Sacred Heart in Conroe will celebrate his 25th
anniversary. His actual anniversary is May 19. The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston will celebrate the
Sacrament of Holy Orders (ordinations) on Saturday, June 6 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown
Houston at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome. If you have never attended an ordination, it is truly one of the most
beautiful celebrations of our Church. Also please continue your prayers for whoever the Holy Spirit is sending us
as our new Parochial Vicar, hopefully, in July.

Finally, let us all remember those who lost their lives
defending ours as a part of the military and armed services.

DOMINGO DE PENTECOSTES
El domingo de Pentecostés
Domingo de Pentecostés es una de las fiestas más antiguas de la iglesia, mencionado en los hechos de los apóstoles (20:16) y primera carta
de St. Pablo a los Corintios (16:8). Es el quincuagésimo día después de la Pascua (si contamos tanto Pascua y Pentecostés), y sustituye a la
fiesta judía de Pentecostés, que ocurrió 50 días después de la Pascua y celebraban el sello de la antigua Alianza en el Monte Sinaí.
Diez cosas que debe saber acerca de Pentecostés
1. Domingo de Pentecostés marca el día en que el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre los Apóstoles.
2. Domingo de Pentecostés se produce 50 días después de la Pascua de Resurrección.
3. La Biblia registra el Pentecostés en Hechos 2:1-13.
4. Pentecostés tiene lugar 10 días después de la Ascensión de Jesús.

Sacerdocio Diocesano

a las 10am. Todos son bienvenidos. Si usted nunca ha asistido a una ordenación, es verdaderamente una de las más bellas celebraciones de
nuestra Iglesia.

Thinking about life as a Priest, Sister or Brother? Come to
Life Awareness, a weekend of discerning about a religious
vocation.
 The program is open to single Catholics ages 18 to 45.
 The Life Awareness Weekend will be held at Holy Name
Retreat Center (HNRC), Friday evening through S

part-time positions opened. MondayFriday, 3:15pm-5:15pm form August
2015 to May 2016. Applicants must be 21 years of age or
older, who enjoys working with children. Applicants must
understand the importance of maintaining a structured
environment and enforcing program rules for the safety of
all children. Openings require applicants to be Virtus
trained and undergo a background check.
