By supporting the Appeal, we demonstrate our unity in Christ as we reach out in faith to love one another in Jesus’ name. It is a meaningful way of expressing our gratitude to God for His many blessings and ful illing our stewardship responsibility. There are a number of priorities facing our diocesan Church that no parish alone can address. Some require the strength and resolve of the entire Catholic community working and sacri icing together as One Body. That is why every parish participates in the Appeal, so that we – through our collective efforts – can continue to build the Father’s Kingdom by advancing the work of the Church. While we cannot always be the one to comfort the grieving, feed the hungry, teach the young and minister to those in need, we can – through our generosity – ensure that our diocesan Church is strong, vibrant, and able to answer the call of those who look to us for help. Next weekend is Commitment Weekend for the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal. The campaign theme, “He Reveals Himself in the Breaking of the Bread”, is taken from the Gospel of St. Luke to be read next week, the Third Sunday of Easter. The act of breaking bread or sharing a meal is a simple daily routine which brings a sense of togetherness to a family or to a community. As Catholics we are called to bear witness to our faith and open our minds and hearts to bring those less fortunate closer to God’s table. I ask that you come to Mass next weekend prepared to support the Annual Catholic Appeal. I further ask that you re lect upon God’s blessings in your life and I urge you to reach out to others by giving as generously as your means allow. With the conclusion of the Paschal Triduum the Church embarks on a fifty day celebration of Easter that culminates with the feast of Pentecost. During this time we are called to reflect on the power of Christ’s resurrection as it is made real in our own lives through the Easter sacraments. The Church, through Her liturgy, guides us in our reflections. Our attention to the readings and ritual prayers each Sunday provide the framework for this period which is known as the period of mystagogy or post-baptismal catechesis and reflection. The primary symbols of Easter (the assembly, light, oil, water, Word, food/drink) figure prominently during this time. May the Holy Spirit guide each of us—and all of us as a community of believers—and bring us to a deeper understanding of the new life offered us. The Rhythm of the Easter Season The Octave: The first eight days of the Easter Season (from Easter Sunday to the Sunday following, inclusive) we celebrate the Octave of Easter. These eight days are celebrated as one great Sunday. Today marks the conclusion of the Octave of Easter. Days Nine to Forty Nine: The first reading of Mass continues to be taken, not from the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) but from the Acts of the Apostles. This second volume by Luke begins with the Ascension and unfolds the life of the early Church. This provides much material for the neophytes to ponder as they become accustomed to their “new life in Christ.” To all who assisted with the liturgies of the Sacred Triduum and Easter Sunday I would like to extend my sincere gratitude. By sharing your time and talent as liturgical ministers you truly helped our parish pray well these holy days and nights. I am very much aware of the demands and sacrifices and the arranging (and rearranging of schedules) you so joyfully undertake for our parish. A special note of gratitude to those who are responsible for the Art and Environment that is necessary for our liturgies. In many ways you folks are the unseen—and often unsung—heroes of liturgy. From sewing at home to ordering, watering and upkeep of the flowers (and everything in between), those who are responsible for our liturgical environment put in many hours, setting the right tone for worship. Most certainly along the same line, I realize the countless hours all of our musicians put in to prepare for these most festive days; and how all of those hours came to fruition as you helped us make a truly joyful sound raised to God in praise. I would be remiss if I did not also extend my most sincere appreciation to your family members who sacrificed as well by your absence at home. I know that each of you ministers because you love the Church and your parish. Thank you for being an example to us all. Fr. Grasing Day Fifty: The Feast of Pentecost closes the Easter Season by celebrating the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the first disciples. At the same time we celebrate the coming of the Spirit into our lives, first on the day of our baptism, and then over and over again throughout our lives compelling us to witness to our faith. Rejoice O Mother Church! MUSIC MINISTRY If you are interested in joining any area of music ministry please contact Rosemary Hadland, 302-3785800, ext. 105, or [email protected]. MASS AT ST. FRANCIS XAVIER SHRINE OLD BOHEMIA Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier in Warwick, Maryland next Sunday, April 19 at 4:00 PM. If you have not had the opportunity to visit this historic church, consider joining us for this liturgy. You’ll be glad you did! The Word in Our Lives: Readings for April 19, 2015 Third Sunday of Easter La Palabra en Nuestra Vidas: 19 de Abril de 2015 III Domingo de Pascua First Reading: Acts 3:13-15, 17-19 Peter said to the people: “The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied in Pilate’s presence when he had decided to release him. You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses. Now I know, brothers, that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did; but God has thus brought to fulfillment what he had announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer. Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away.” Primera Lectura: Hechos 3:13-15, 17-19 Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 4:2, 4, 7-8, 9 Segunda Lectura: 1 Juan 2:1-5a Second Reading: 1 John 2:1-5a My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one. He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world. The way we may be sure that we know him is to keep his commandments. Those who say, “I know him,” but do not keep his commandments are liars, and the truth is not in them. But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. Gospel: Luke 24:35-48 The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way, and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.” HELP SAVE TRANSPORTATION STIPENDS FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOL FAMILIES Each year, parents who send their children to Catholic schools in Delaware save the State an estimated $150 million while supporting Delaware's public schools with their taxes. Catholic school parents pay the same taxes that neighboring public school parents pay, without the benefit. In return, the State gives these families a minimal stipend to reimburse them for a small percentage of their annual transportation costs. For the second consecutive year, Governor Jack Markell is trying to unfairly eliminate this modest stipend. Last year, the Delaware General Assembly Joint Finance Committee, at the urging of Catholic school families and supporters, restored funding for the stipend in the FY 2015 budget. Once again, we need your help to tell members of the Joint Finance Committee that families who sacrifice to send their children to Catholic schools deserve to keep their transportation reimbursement stipend. Even if you sent an email to your representative in the past, we are asking you to do it again. Go to www.cdow.org, click on the school bus photo and follow the easy steps to let your voice be heard.
