EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR
At the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre,
we are tasked with a tremendous responsibility.
Each day, we are reminded of the heritage and
culture that needs to be passionately nurtured,
protected, and experienced. Our community
elders and founders have worked hard to ensure
that the NNMCC stands as a beacon of a vibrant culture for generations
to come.
Our Museum not only tells the stories of past injustices, but it also celebrates the Nikkei
community’s successes in making Canada a better country. Moreover, it carries the
responsibility of archiving our community’s rich history – a duty that is not taken lightly. And
of course, our Cultural Centre is more than just a brick-and-mortar facility – it is a vibrant place
where youth can explore the uniqueness of what it means to be Nikkei, where seniors can
enjoy cultural activities, and finally, a gathering place for all cultures to enjoy. Each and every
day, the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre serves as a reminder that we must always
honour the past, celebrate the present, and educate the future of all Nikkei in Canada.
We hope you to take time to review this edition of Nikkei Network as it encompasses
programming for all to enjoy, no matter what your interest is. In addition, we are dependent
on our members for their support, and we would like to encourage you to extend yours so
that we can continue to offer the programs that have made NNMCC a welcome place for

Magic Hour

The Instant Coffee Collective takes an
unexpected and innovative look at the
gems from our collection. Magic Hour is the
name of that time just before sunrise or just
after sunset, and we are excited to tease
out the magic in our archives. The Instant
Coffee Collective is a group of artists known
for their collaborative, interactive, and
often mischievous approach. The exhibit
will showcase items from our permanent
collection with a twist and change through
the course of the show. A series of events
will demand interaction and intervention
from the community.

Japanese Performing Arts Before Kabuki
Talk by Yayoi Hirano
Saturday, February 21, 2pm
Long before the emergence of kabuki, there
was already a long-established tradition
of different performing art styles in Japan
including gagaku, sarugaku, and kagura.
With a grant from the Canadian Council for
the Arts, dancer Yayoi Hirano conducted
research into Japan’s dance history from
800-1800 and traveled along the Japan
Sea coast to meet dancers and watch
performances. She will share the fruits of
her research in this fascinating talk.

Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society News
The Nikkei Garden pathway has been vastly improved through a grant from New Horizons.
Over summer, our volunteers and contractors created a walkable path between Nikkei Centre
and Nikkei Home, and re-surfaced and expanded the path around the Nikkei Garden. Today,
it is barrier free, for all to enjoy. Our most sincere appreciation to Sam Yamamoto and Nick
Sueyoshi who coordinated, designed, and led the effort. Over the winter, with the assistance
of Nikkei National Museum, the Garden will have signage to highlight some of the plants and
the importance of gardens in Japanese culture.
In September, we started Iki Iki programs with members of the Nikkei Seniors Alliance (Nikkei
Seniors Health Care & Housing Society, Steveston Japanese Canadian Cultural Center, and
Tonari Gumi). Iki Iki welcomed new participants and volunteers and we hope all participants
are enjoying not only the program activities, but also being part of the community.
We are looking forward to your participation in the following two programs.

Keeping active and engaged is a wonderful way for seniors to stay
healthy and independent. Join this once-a-week program for a

日系ガーデンの歩道がNewHorizonsforSeniorsProgramの補助金により大幅に改善されまし
た。夏にボランティアの皆さんと建築業者が、
日系センターと日系ホームを結ぶ道と、
日系ガーデンの
周りの道を拡張、再舗装しました。現在、舗装された道路はバリアフリーになっており皆さんにご利用
頂けます。
コーディネート、設計およびリーダーシップをとったサム・ヤマモト氏、ニック・スエヨシ氏
に心からの感謝を申し上げます。冬には日系博物館の支援により、庭園には植物や日本文化におけ
る重要性を記した標記が取り付けられます。
9月に日系シニアグループ（日系シニアヘルスケア住宅協会、
スティーブストン日加文化センター、
隣組）のメンバーで、いきいきプログラムを始めました。
「いきいき」は新規の参加者やボランティア
を迎えました。私たちの願いは参加者がプログラムだけでなくコミュニティの一員として楽しんでい

伝統的な臼と杵を使った餅つきのデモンストレーション、つきたてのお餅の賞味、そして、お
餅とお饅頭の販売もします。杵を持って餅つきに挑戦してみませんか。日本の年末恒例の伝統行
事にぜひご家族でご参加ください。子供たちは着物姿で来てみてはいかがですか。このイベント
は NNMCC 活動補助グループ主催、日系ガーデナーズ協会の協力で行われます。

インスタントコーヒー集団が意外性と斬新さをもってカナダ日系博物館の所蔵品を見つめま
す。「マジックアワー」とは日の出直前あるいは日没直後の事を指し、当コレクションに眠るマ
ジックを解き放ちます。インスタントコーヒー集団は共同製作、観客との対話、そして遊び心
のあるアプローチで知られる芸術家グループです。当館の所蔵品にひねりを加えて紹介し、期
間中に展示が変化していきます。イベントではコミュニティとの対話と参加を促します。

日系文化センター・博物館は、これまで日系文化を育み、維持し、後世
に伝えるべく大きな役割を担ってきました。日系コミュニティーの先人や
本組織の設立者は、次世代に向けた文化の指針であるよう努めてきました。
本博物館は、過去の不正義だけに関わらず、日系コミュニティーがカナダ
での発展に貢献してきたことも讃えております。また、日系コミュニティー
の豊富なこれまでの歴史の記録および保存の責務を果たしています。
また、文化センターは施設だけではなく、若い方々には日系への理解と認知を促し、高齢者
の方々には様々な文化活動を提供する役割を担っています。日系文化センター・博物館は常に
歴史と向き合い、現在を謳歌し、カナダにおける日系の未来の啓発を担っていきます。
