BAM Quick Facts

Fact Sheet
What: BAM Labs’ Touch-free Life Care™ (TLC) under mattress sensor and HIPAA compliant cloud
monitoring platform transforms any bed into a smart bed. The TLC smart bed solution provides
touch-free biometric monitoring of vital sign trends and motion during rest resulting in
significant reduction in pressure sore wounds, fall prevention, medication compliance, and early
detection of sleep disorders. The FDA registered TLC smart bed system is powered by BAM Labs
proprietary cloud computing platform which enables healthcare professionals and caregivers to
monitor essential health information wirelessly anytime and from anywhere.
Why:
In the new age of connected care, smart bed technology expands the realm of informed health
management and enables healthcare professionals and caregivers to provide more efficient and
affordable care regardless of setting.
Where: The BAM Labs TLC Smart Bed System was designed for
use by professional caregivers in various healthcare
settings including Hospitals, Long Term Care, Sub-Acute
and Rehab, Assisted Living, and Home Health.
How:
The BAM Labs TLC biometric sensor mat placed under
any bed mattress continuously detects trends in heart
and breathing rate, motion and presence. Bio-signal
U.S. PATENT NO. 8,287,452 and 8,444,558
data is wirelessly transmitted to BAM Labs’ HIPAA
compliant TLC analysis cloud platform. Caregivers receive health data and alerts on their PC or
mobile devices such as smart phones, iPods, and iPads. Using the BAM Labs TLC System,
healthcare professionals and caregivers can monitor a group of people at all times while
performing their daily duties. They can also review long term trend data for sleep patterns,
resting heart and breathing rate and sleep quality to identify adverse changes in health for early
intervention.
Who:
BAM Labs was founded in Silicon Valley in 2006 by former Apple product development
professionals Steve Young and Richard Rifredi. The BAM Labs team includes experts in bio-signal
analysis, scalable web services and embedded software development, and healthcare
distribution. The BAM Labs medical advisory board is chaired by Dr. Jed Black, former director of
the Stanford Medical Center’s Sleep Disorders Clinic, and includes researchers and medical
professionals from UCLA, University of Pennsylvania, and The Johns Hopkins Hospital. BAM Labs
has partnered with Goodmark Medical and Home Technology Systems for distribution to
hospitals, post-acute, senior living, and home health settings in the United States, and with
Advanced Health Care Products in Canada.
When: The BAM Labs TLC Smart Bed System was made commercially available in the United States in
2012. The TLC System has been used by US based University researchers since September 2009
and has been used in long term pilot programs in Japan and the US since 2010 for aging in place
applications. Customers using the TLC Smart Bed System include Top 100 Long Term Care

Applications
Heart Rate Monitoring
Monitor resting heart rate and track long-term trends to
proactively identify health issues and the impact of new
medications.
Breathing Rate Monitoring
Monitor resting breathing rate and compare to long-term
averages to identify potential health issues and the impact of
new medications.
In and Out of Bed Monitoring
Track in and out of bed events and provide immediate alerts to
caregivers, so that caregivers can provide assistance and
reduce falls.
Sleep Analysis
Monitor nightly sleep quality by comparing sleep duration,
restlessness, nightly heart rate and breathing rate to long-term
trends and medical standards. A nightly sleep score of 1 (poor)
to 100 (best) provides an easy to understand interpretation of
sleep quality.
Bed Sore Management
Automated messages are generated to remind caregivers
when to turn the patient based on duration of time since last
motion event.
