The pride of Switzerland
D
as Dokudrama «Der Kreis» erzählt eine Liebesgeschichte,
die mit einem unerwarteten Erfolg verknüpft ist. Das
gleichnamige Schweizer Schwulenmagazin wurde
zwischen 1932 und 1967 veröffentlicht. Angesichts der Unterdrückung durch die Nazis florierte es im Untergrund, und es
wurden sogar Ausgaben in unterschiedlichen Sprachen veröffentlicht. Regisseur und Co-Autor Stefan Haupt präsentiert eine
Kombination aus nachgestellten Szenen und Interviews mit dem
Paar Ernst Ostertag und Röbi Rapp, deren Beziehung eng mit der
Geschichte des Magazins verbunden ist.
Bislang gewann «Der Kreis» sechs Auszeichnungen bei Filmfestivals, darunter den Teddy Award für den besten Dokumentarfilm bei der Berlinale 2014. Zudem war der Film der offizielle
Beitrag der Schweiz für die diesjährigen Oscars.
«Statt auf Unterschiede, sollten wir uns auf das konzentrieren,
was wir gemein haben. Wir suchen alle nach Liebe und wollen
geliebt werden», so Haupt. «Ich spreche in der Regel nicht über
Filme mit einer Botschaft, aber diese Botschaft möchte ich in
meinem Film vermitteln.»

A
docudrama revisiting the real-life love story at the heart
of an unlikely success, “Der Kreis” takes its name from the
Swiss gay magazine published between 1932 and 1967.
In the face of oppression from the Nazis, the magazine flourished
via underground circulation, even spawning editions in different
languages. Director and co-writer Stefan Haupt utilises a mix of
re-enactment and real-life interviews with Ernst Ostertag and
Röbi Rapp, the couple whose relationship is entwined with the
history of the magazine.
A winner of six awards at film festivals so far, including
the Teddy Award for Best Documentary at the 2014 Berlin Film
Festival, “Der Kreis” was also Switzerland’s official submission for
this year’s Oscars.
“It’s not about focusing on the differences, but emphasising the
things humans share – that we all want to love and be loved,” says
Haupt. “I don’t usually talk about films with messages, but I want
this message to come across in my film.”

and daring,” says Streep of the
project, her first musical role since
2008’s “Mamma Mia”. “This
is a musical with a brain. It’s

superhuman, or extraordinary. He just

Rewriting history
In der romantischen Komödie «The Rewrite»
spielt Hugh Grant einen Drehbuchautor, der sich

ls Samwise Gamgee in der letzten Szene
von «The Lord of the Rings: The Return of
the King» seine runde, gelbe Tür schloss,
gingen die meisten von uns davon aus, dass wir
Mittelerde für immer verlassen hatten. Nicht zuletzt
Regisseur Peter Jackson. «Ich dachte, dass ich das
nun hinter mir lassen würde», erinnert er sich.
«Aber Stück für Stück stellte ich fest, dass
‹The Hobbit› mir die Gelegenheit bot, etwas anderes als das ‹Rings›-Projekt zu unternehmen. Diese
Geschichte hat viel mehr Charme und Humor.»
Letztlich erfasste den mit mehreren Oscars ausgezeichneten Regisseur eine solche Begeisterung
für das Projekt, dass er den Roman von JRR Tolkien
in drei epische Filme umwandelte. In «An Unexpected Journey» macht sich der gemütliche Hobbit Bilbo Baggins auf, um 13 Zwergen bei der Rückeroberung ihres Heimatlands zu helfen. «The Desolation
of Smaug» erzählt die Geschichte des Kampfs gegen einen riesigen feuerspeienden Drachen. Und in
«The Battle of the Five Armies» übertraf sich
Jackson schliesslich selbst und lieferte ein unglaubliches Spektakel voller gruseliger Orks, Kampfschweine und riesenhafter Vampir-Fledermäuse.
Die «The Hobbit»-Trilogie bietet ein gelungenes
Zusammenspiel neuer und vertrauter Elemente,
darunter bekannte Figuren wie Sir Ian McKellen
als gütiger Magier Gandalf und der Drehort
Hobbingen. Die auffälligsten neuen Charaktere sind
wohl der wandlungsfähige Bärenmensch Beorn

hat unterdessen das Tempo angehoben und einen

Ist es nun vorbei? Auf die Frage, ob er nun
Tolkiens «The Silmarillion» verfilmen würde, antwortete Jackson kürzlich: «Es könnte sein, dass es eine
Verfilmung geben wird, aber ich werde am Strand
von Fidschi liegen und mich darauf freuen, sie auf
meinem iPhone anzusehen.» McKellen ist sich da
nicht so sicher. «2001 sagte mir Peter, dass
nun alles vorbei sei», so der Schauspieler.
«Und dann kam es ganz anders. Ich glaube
also nicht unbedingt, dass dies das Ende
der Reise ist.»

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
W
hen Samwise Gamgee closed his round
yellow door in the final shot of “The Lord of
the Rings: The Return of the King”, most
people assumed we’d seen the last of Middle-earth.
Especially director Peter Jackson. “I thought I was
leaving it behind,” he remembers. “But gradually
I realised ‘The Hobbit’ was an opportunity to do
something a little different to ‘Rings’. There’s a lot
more charm and humour in the story.”
Ultimately, the multi-Oscar-winner became
so enthused about the project that he ended up
splitting JRR Tolkien’s novel into three epic movies.
“An Unexpected Journey” sets homely hobbit Bilbo
Baggins on his quest to help 13 dwarves reclaim
their homeland. “The Desolation of Smaug” sees the
company go face-to-jaws with a gigantic, firespewing dragon. And “The Battle of the Five Armies”
sees Jackson outdo himself, with a mega-melee
involving grisly orcs, battle-pigs and oversized
vampire bats.
“The Hobbit” trilogy has turned out to be
a winning mixture of the new and the familiar, from
returning characters like Sir Ian McKellen’s kindly
sorcerer Gandalf to stunning locations like Hobbiton.
The most striking additions, perhaps, are
shapeshifting bear-man Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt)
and hook-handed albino orc Azog (Manu Bennett),
who’s only mentioned by name once in Tolkien’s
book. Meanwhile, Jackson pumps up the set-pieces
to blockbuster level: a sequence involving dwarves in
barrels is one of the wildest movie action sequences
in years.
But is this the end? When asked if he’d adapt
Tolkien’s “The Silmarillion”, Jackson recently
laughed, “It may well get made, but I’ll be on a
beach in Fiji, looking forward to watching it on my
iPhone.” McKellen is not so sure. “I was told by Peter
in 2001 that it was all over,” says the actor. “But here
we are. So I don’t believe necessarily that this is the
end of the journey.”

hat es Sherlock Holmes, der berühmteste Detektiv der
Literaturgeschichte, mit einem legendären «Höllenhund»
zu tun. Angeblich lastet auf der wohlhabenden Familie Baskerville
ein Fluch. Es wird von einem furchterregenden Hund berichtet,
der in der Moorlandschaft von Devonshire seine Opfer tötet.
Holmes und sein Partner Dr. Watson wollen herausfinden, wer
oder was hinter der Mordserie steckt.
Geschaffen wurde die literarische Figur des Sherlock Holmes
gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts von dem schottischen Autor

he most iconic case investigated by literature’s most
famous detective, “The Hound of the Baskervilles”
pits Sherlock Holmes against a legendary “hellhound”.
Part of a supposed curse against the wealthy Baskerville family,
the fearsome dog is reportedly appearing on the Devonshire
moors, claiming the lives of its victims. Sherlock and his sidekick
Dr. Watson set out to discover who – or what – is responsible for
the deaths.
Created by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle in the late 19th century, Sherlock Holmes was allegedly
inspired by Joseph Bell, a surgeon Doyle had worked for as a clerk,
although Bell insisted Holmes’ trademark behaviour – particularly
his quick and astute powers of deductions – were based on Doyle’s
own mannerisms.
“The Hound of the Baskervilles” is the third of four full-length
novels Doyle wrote about Holmes, first serialised in “The Strand
Magazine” before being published as a book in 1902. Its canine
antagonist is possibly inspired by a real-life Devonshire legend
known as the “Yeth hound” or Welsh legend the “Hounds of
Black Vaughan”. Doyle was friends with the real-life Baskerville
family, whose Baskerville Hall home is now a hotel in Hay-on-Wye
in Wales.
Doyle also wrote 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories between
1892 and 1927. “The Hound of the Baskervilles” remains the most
popular, though. It has been adapted for stage, radio, film and TV
more than 20 times in total.
In the audiobook version playing on board this month, Sherlock
Holmes is brought to life by Nicholas Briggs, who also provides the
voice of the Cybermen in the TV adventures of another very British
hero, Doctor Who. Briggs has starred as Holmes on stage and in
six Sherlock Holmes audiobooks to date. It’s the latest chapter in
a case that keeps being reopened to meet with the public demand
to hear a classic story retold.
