Identity and the Place
Shereen Al-Ouran
Identität und der Ort - das Öffentliche und das
Private, das Andere und das Selbst: Mit ihren
einzigartigen Bildern tritt die jordanische Künstlerin Shereen Al-Ouran in einen künstlerischen Dialog mit sich selbst: “Durch meine
Kunst konstruiere ich mein Selbst, wer ich bin,
wohin ich gehöre. In meinen Bildern hinterfrage
ich Klischees und Konventionen.” Ein Anspruch,
der sich auch in Shereen Al-Ouran’s Malstil widerspiegelt: Frei von künstlerischen Konventionen und kunsthistorischen Kriterien,
entwickelt sie einen intuitiven Zugang zur
Malerei, experimentiert mit Öl und Acrylfarben,
eleganter Kalligraphie und Collagetechniken. In
ihrer Solo-Ausstellung “Identity and the Place”
kombiniert sie nun lebhafte Darstellungen
öffentlicher Orte mit intimen, selbstbewußten
Porträts von Weiblichkeit und kreiert so ein
Spannungsfeld von Öffentlichem und Privatem,
in dem der Betrachter eingeladen ist, herkömmliche Konventionen von Identität zu
durchbrechen.
Geboren 1975 in Jordanien, studierte die Künstlerin Shereen Al-Ouran
zunächst Architektur an
der University of Jordan
in Amman. Mit ihrem
Mann, einem Diplomaten, zog sie für einige
Jahre nach Marokko. Dort entschloss sie sich,
ihrer langjährigen Leidenschaft
für die Kunst nachzugehen und
am Institut of Art in Rabat Malerei zu studieren. Nach ihrem Aufenthalt in Marokko zog Shereen
Al-Ouran mit ihrem Mann nach
Kuwait, wo sie ihren unverwechselbaren, lebhaften Malstil weiterentwickelte.
Shereen Al-Ouran lebt und arbeitet zurzeit in
Berlin. Sie hat schon an zahlreichen Ausstellungen in Marokko und Kuwait teilgenommen.
Identity and the Place – the public and the private, the other and the self: with her unique
paintings, Jordanian artist Shereen Al-Ouran
enters into an artistic dialogue with herself: “I
construct a sense of who I am, where I belong
to”, she describes this artistic process. “Through
my art, I question stereotypes and conventions.” A claim that is also reflected in her style
of painting: unfettered by artistic conventions
and art historical criteria, she develops an intuitive approach to painting, experimenting with
oil and acrylic colours, elegant calligraphy and
collage. In her solo-exhibition “Identity and the
Place” she combines vibrant depictions of public
places with intimate, self-confident portrayals
of femininity, thus creating an area of interaction between the public and the private and
inviting the viewer to challenge stereotypical
conventions of identity.
Born 1975 in Jordan, the artist Shereen AlOuran studied architectural engineering at the
University of Jordan. With her
husband, a diplomat, she moved
to Morocco. During her stay in
Morocco, she decided to follow
her lifelong passion for art and
study painting at the Institut of
Art in Rabat. In the following
years, she moved to Kuwait where she continued to develop her unique vibrant style of painting. Shereen Al-Ouran now lives and works in
Berlin, Germany. She has taken part in various
exhibitions in Morocco and Kuwait.
