An Invitation from Cardinal O’Malley to those who have been away from the Church
Some of you have drifted away from the Church and have been waiting for a good time to return. I pray that you will consider this the time to
join us on our faith journey toward Heaven. The sacred teachings of the Church offer guidance, direction and meaning in a world where so
many cannot find their way. Our faith points us to Jesus, who is “the Way, the Truth and the Life.” Some of you have made a choice to stop
coming to Church because you have been hurt by the actions of someone in the Church or because of a difficulty with a Church teaching.
From my first day as archbishop of Boston and perhaps for the rest of my days, I will always be asking the forgiveness of all those who have
been hurt by the actions, or inaction, of people and leaders in the Church. Please do not let those experiences and memories separate you
from the love of Christ and of our Catholic family and prevent you from receiving the grace of the sacraments.
A reporter [once] asked me what I would say to Catholics who do not attend Mass because they disagree with, or have questions about,
Church teaching. I answered that our teaching does not change because people disagree with it; our faith comes from Christ’s own teaching
in the Scriptures and through the teaching authority of the Church throughout the ages. We recognize, however, that many struggle to
reconcile Church teaching with social norms in American society today; to them, we say that we want to engage in a meaningful
conversation with you. We want you to know that you are part of our family. We want to assure you that God loves you and waits for you at
Sunday Mass. The best place to begin a conversation is by gathering with the family of believers in the worshiping community. To those
who consider themselves unwelcome at Mass because of some irregularity or moral struggle, please know that you are always loved by
God and the Catholic community desires your presence with us. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ. An inability to fulfill all aspects of
Christian worship or to receive Communion should not keep you from Mass. In fact, the habit of being faithful to the Sunday obligation can
provide the actual grace, if you cooperate with it, to give you the strength to overcome current obstacles and find paths of reconciliation. We
stand ready to help you.

Fourth Sunday of Advent

From Fr. Garcia
Parish Gifts for December
A rappeler

4th Sunday of Advent
It’s amazing how much we can do when we get a surprise call that
unexpected company is coming, or parents are stopping by or the
kids are bringing home a friend from school. With little notice, we
can prepare for our guests. A quick run of the vacuum, a fast trip to
the store and a few moments to clean up gets us ready in a hurry for
whoever is coming to visit. Whether we are motivated by pride, love
or necessity, the job gets done.

Readings
2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8-11, 16
Psalm 89:2-5, 27, 29
Romans 16:25-27
Luke 1:26-38 (see also "The Angel and Mary")
What is announced to Mary in today's Gospel is the revelation of all
that the prophets had spoken. It is, as Paul declares in today's
Epistle, the mystery kept secret since before the foundation of the
world (see Ephesians 1:9; 3:3-9).
Special Thanks to:
Mary is the virgin prophesied to bear a son of the house of David
(see Isaiah 7:13-14). And nearly every word the angel speaks to her
today evokes and echoes the long history of salvation recorded in
the Bible.
♦
Mary is hailed as the daughter Jerusalem, called to rejoice that her
king, the Lord God, has come into her midst as a mighty savior (see
Zephaniah 3:14-17).
♦
♦
♦
The One whom Mary is to bear will be Son of "the Most High" - an
ancient divine title first used to describe the God of the priest-king
Melchizedek, who brought out bread and wine to bless Abraham at
the dawn of salvation history (see Genesis 14:18-19).
He will fulfill the covenant God makes with His chosen one, David, in
today's First Reading. As we sing in today's Psalm, He will reign
forever as highest of the kings of the earth, and He will call God,
"my Father." As Daniel saw the Most High grant everlasting
dominion to the Son of Man (see Daniel 4:14; 7:14), His kingdom
will have no end.
The 7th and 8th graders from Our Lady of Lourdes would like to
thank all the parishioners that came to their Pancake Breakfast or
gave donations. They raised close to $500 that will use to support
St. Vincent de Paul at St. Edith Stein.
Thank you also to Amy Harkins who made and organized the
Giving Tree tags, and decorated the tree at Our Lady of Lourdes
with other parents. Many thanks to all the parishioners who helped
fulfill 350 tags gifts for My Brother’s Keeper Christmas Assistance
program.
Special Thanks to all those who generously supported Officer
Rosie Brown and her Christmas Toy Drive at St. Edith Stein.
Thanks to the students of West Middle School for their annual
Food Drive for St. Vincent de Paul. The food collected will feed
many hungry families this winter.

He is to rule over the house of Jacob - the title God used in making
His covenant with Israel at Sinai (see Exodus 19:3), and again used
in promising that all nations would worship the God of Jacob (see
Isaiah 2:1-5).
Jesus has been made known, Paul says today, to bring all nations
to the obedience of faith. We are called with Mary today, to marvel
at all that the Lord has done throughout the ages for our salvation.
And we too, must respond to this annunciation with humble
obedience - that His will be done, that our lives be lived according to
His word.
