Merry Christmas!!
Thank you to everyone who has worked diligently and tirelessly
throughout the year. It is needless to say that it has been a big year with
many challenges however there have also been many accomplishments
that we should celebrate and highlight:










The development and endorsement of the Mental Health Clinical
Services Plan (Strategic Plan) which outlines clear strategic
direction for HNEMHS.
Development of the Operational Plan with all leaders having a 90
Day Action Plan. This further imbeds an accountability framework
for MHS.
The continued introduction and imbedding of Excellence tools and
tactics. Many teams have truly embraced excellence and we have
started to see the real benefits in having a framework that supports
person centred practice and therapeutic relationships with the
people we serve as well as increased engagement with staff
across the service. Well Done!
Mental Health Services is ensuring that we operate within the
funding provided.
We have been able to commit to the purchase of a range of items
across Mental Health Services including but not limited to a new
ECT machine, new fencing at Kaoriki, 6 vehicles and a bus for
Morisset Hospital.
The Local Health District has also invested money into Mental
Health Services. We have had $568,000 worth of refurbishments
(kitchens, bathrooms, observation area), 88 beds replaced with
electronic beds and comfortable mattresses, and have had flooring
approved.
Many people across the service have been heavily involved in the
CAMHS planning process which will see great improvements and
changes for the vital service we provide children and adolescents
within Mental Health Services.
The implementation of a governance framework that will continue
to evolve - that being the Quality, Patient and Care framework.
Well done to all teams who have embraced this framework.
Respectful workplace implementation with all teams having
developed their standards of behaviour and many teams having
been involved in speaking up sessions and individual workplace
workshops.
Further engagement with the non-government sector through
holding forums across the District and ongoing work with the
Collaborative Care Committee which will see even further work
taking shape in 2015.

All services now have the appropriate Sorry Statement, flags, artwork, posters and acknowledgment of
country signs to ensure that people from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community feel
comfortable in accessing our service. Staff have also increased their compliance in completing the
Aboriginal Identification training.
More positions within Mental Health Services have been targeted positions this year increasing the
number of Aboriginal employees. 3.5% of our workforce are now Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
Inpatient programming has been redeveloped with a range of resources to better support units to ensure
that quality and consistent programming is taking place.
Carer rounding in the month of October – with some great feedback to support continuous improvement
of the service.
Mental Health Month celebrations across the District – well done to all involved! It was a great effort.
National Disability Insurance Scheme structure within Mental Health to support our staff and the people
we serve through this important reform.

Managers and Leaders from every service are currently working together to ensure that each criterion for
all National Standards can be met.
Inaugural “Yarn with the GM” day which was a great success with feedback to better improve the support
we provide to our Aboriginal Employees.
Review of our KPI’s which will be released shortly for all to monitor our performance on Smart Viewer.
We are positioned well for 2015 where we will continue to move forward in achieving a number of key
initiatives. During the next year the focus will continue on the following:







Further embracing and imbedding the Accountability Framework, Excellence tools and tactics, Quality,
Patient and Care Framework and the National Standards.
Positive leadership, care, compassion and connecting all employees with MHS vision, values and
principles
Closing the Gap – further increasing the number of Aboriginal employees within MHS and developing a
Closing the Gap Collaborative Committee who will drive the Closing the Gap plan for MHS.
Increasing the care and compassion towards the people we serve by working within a person centred
framework
Connecting all employees with MHS vision, values and principles.
Implementation of the clinical services and operational plans.
Improving mandatory training compliance and ensuring that we are reaching all KPI’s which in turn
reflects on the quality of service that we are delivering.
On behalf of the Mental Health Executive and Senior Leadership Team I would like to say thank you for making
this year a great year; thank you for your professionalism, your focus on outcomes for the people we serve and
your understanding and patience when at times things don’t go as planned.
This year we saw tremendous outcomes across the District and I credit this to your hard work, dedication and
motivation. I personally feel very privileged to be leading such a fantastic team, so thank you.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warm wishes for Christmas and the New Year to you and to
your family.

Awards for HNEMH
Featured in the CE News..
Training honour for Mental Health
I want to recognise also the efforts and success of our Mental Health Service which has been named as the
inaugural NSW prevocational training provider of the year by the Health Education and Training Institute
(HETI). The award recognises the work of a hospital, or in this case service, that has made a substantial
contribution to the education and support of junior doctors – including junior and resident medical officers.
HNE Mental Health is the only service in the state to train and support prevocational trainees and, as the HETI
survey team noted, is an outstanding example of an integrated service and training environment in which
trainees are provided with a very high standard of teaching, supervision and mentorship.
Congratulations must go to Director of Training Dr Harsimrat Sandhu and his team and indeed to all of our
mental health staff. Judges particularly commented on the integrated teaching and training regime, the
emphasis and resources placed on it throughout the service, and “the very obvious engagement and genuine
interest of all staff – clinical and administrative/support – to the training and support of trainees”.
Congratulations also go to Professor Brian Kelly for his recent HMRI Award for Research Excellence for 2014,
and Dr Catherine Hickie who has been awarded a Faculty of Health and Medicine Award for her outstanding
contribution to teaching and learning in the School of Medicine and Public Health.
