Overview of Ability Links NSW
• A new way to support people with disability, their families
and carers
• Purpose is to help people with disability aged 9 – 64 years
to access the community and mainstream services
• $27.9m (2013/14 figures) committed for 248 Ability Links
Coordinators (referred to as Linkers), including 27
Aboriginal identified positions
• Program commenced across NSW on 1 July 2014

Who can access Ability Links NSW?
• Ability Links seeks to support people who are not
traditionally known to the disability service system
• Anyone can contact their local Linker – the Linker does not
need proof of diagnosis or a referral
• No assessment or eligibility criteria
• Not time-limited

1. Work alongside
people with disability,
their families and
carers.
2. Assist individuals
to achieve their goals
3. Work alongside
mainstream services,
Aboriginal services
and community.
How does Ability Links NSW differ from
Case Management?
Aims to:

based first point of
contact in local
community to
improve access
and engagement;
- support and
encourage
participants to
reach their goals.

Commenced operations: 1 July 2013 (39 Linker positions)
• ALNSW (Aboriginal) – Hunter : Barkuma Neighbourhood Centre
Commenced operations: 1 January 2014 (4 Linker positions)

Ability Links NSW Evaluation Overview
• An evaluation of Ability Links NSW will be conducted over
the first three years of operation and will include engaging
with providers, people with disability, families and carers
• In November 2013 Urbis Pty Ltd was appointed to conduct
the evaluation
• Aim is to measure the impact of the operation of the Ability
Links NSW model

To date, The St Vincent de Paul Society has assisted over
1000 people and made over 35,000 community
connections throughout the Hunter area.
