ABS Elementary NEWSLETTER
December 2014
We have had a very productive first
quarter at ABS. Your child has acclimated
to his/her teachers, other students, and
subjects. As a division we have worked
tirelessly to support both academic
achievement and social emotional
learning. Both are being addressed as we
prepare your child for their academic
pursuits and life in general. We believe that
a strong mind is complemented with strong
character.
During the first quarter, we assessed the
students both formally and informally to
determine their academic strengths as well
as areas that need further strengthening
with various assessment instruments; such
as MAP, DIBELS, and Baseline. In addition
to classroom tests and quizzes, the
aforementioned assessments have
provided teachers with data to support
and spur on academic growth.
On the other front, we have been
supporting social emotional learning
throughout the division. Our theme of
“filling someone’s bucket” has encouraged
our students to consider how their actions
support our school community and how
kind words go a long way in developing
healthy positive relationships. In addition,
our character ed. assemblies, homeroom
times, and morning assemblies have also
supported in creating a stronger
community.
Although the school year has already begun,
an opportunity has presented its self for parents
and students. Reports cards were recently sent
home with MAP results for 2nd - 5th grades. Now
is a great time for reflection and setting goals
for rest of school year. Include your child in the
goal setting process. Share what he/she did
well over quarter 1, and what still needs
improvement. Whether it pertained to grades,
behavior, or attendance; you can set
manageable goals for success. Some great
goals to consider are reading on a daily basis,
practicing math facts and other strategies,
eating well, getting plenty of rest, and being
on time to school.
If you met with your child’s teachers on
November 20th that was a great start to
partner with the school and to discuss a plan
for success.
Let’s work together toward a year of growth
and success. Remember, it all starts with a
great plan.
