PASTOR’S COLUMN
A Blessed and Merry Christmas from
each of us on the Sacred Heart Staff.
Our prayers and wishes for all of your
families through this blessed season
and through the New Year!
As we wrap another year I’d like to share with you some of the
monumental things that have been happening at Sacred Heart and
that which we look forward to in the upcoming year! First, for all of
you who have not seen Sacred Heart’s Video, it’s a Diocesan
Blockbuster explaining what a Cathedral is in relation to the rest of
the Diocese, our history, and the beauty of Sacred Heart. Please
take a moment to view it on our parish website: www.rc.net/
davenport/shc. This video has been distributed to each of the
parishes in the Diocese with the hopes of creating a greater
awareness and appreciation for the Seat of the Diocese!
I am hopeful for a great year ahead for our parish. For the last two
years, we have been campaigning, mostly in the local community, for
the proposed gathering space, bathrooms, dining hall and meeting
rooms/classrooms to be added to Sacred Heart. Mostly from the
support of our own parish, we presently have a little over $3 million
pledged and, of that, almost $1 million collected. The estimated
cost for Phase II of our building project is $5.5 million. Diocesan
policy states that we must have collected $60% ($3.1 million) of
estimated cost before building. Throughout 2015 I hope to expand
our campaign in the greater Diocese seeking the support and help
for our Diocesan Cathedral! To help accomplish this, with Bishop
Amos’ endorsement and the permission of the Presbytery Council,
the Davenport Diocese will launch SACRED HEART SUNDAY, the 2nd
week in February, an annual event to recognize and create a greater
awareness of our Diocesan Home! A 2nd collection will be taken up
throughout the Diocese to help maintain this magnificent structure,
subsidize Diocesan events and support the Cathedral’s vision. It is
my prayer and hope that this annual weekend will help us in our
campaign and parish vision, as well as bring more of our Diocesan
Catholics to visit Sacred Heart!
Also, Sacred Heart is sponsoring its first Cathedral Sunday/
Valentine Steak Fundraising Event Saturday evening February 14th.
This $50 dinner will offer you a fabulous steak dinner, complete with
wine, beer, hors d’oeuvres, live music and a decorated parish hall
like you’ve never seen before! Limited tickets are printed for this
event, so get yours now and you’ll not only have a great time, but
share with your significant other the love of St. Valentine AND, of
course, support a great cause!! Tickets will be sold after Masses
through January or you may call the office (324-3257) to reserve
your own!
As I continue my 4th year here at Sacred Heart (where has the time
gone?) my prayer continues to be for the people of our parish, our
Bishop and our Diocese. I pray that the faith of our people will
continue to grow and flourish as we walk with Christ each day of our
lives and through the New Year. May

MAGGIE SUE’S DOGMATIC
THEOLOGY
I KNEW IT! That Pope Francis is the
AWESOMEST of them all! My Sheltie
ears really perked this past week when
all over the animal world, (and the
media too), how Pope Francis was
comforting a boy whose pet canine
friend had died. The Pope was quoted
as saying “One day we will see our animals again in the
eternity of Christ. Paradise is open to all of God’s
creatures!” The media went on to say that Pope
Francis, who took his papal name from the patron saint
of animals, St. Francis of Assisi, was only speaking
conversationally. But I like how he comforted the boy
and that’s what dogs do best: offer comfort, love and
companionship. I think dogs will be in heaven!
Speaking of animals, Partridges, and French Hens and
such – my Dad’s been working hard explaining the faith
through the 12 days of Christmas. Few people know
that the origin of this song was written in code to teach
the faithful at a time when it was outlawed to practice
the faith. Here’s his rundown:
1. The partridge in a pear
tree is Jesus.
2. The two turtledoves are
the Old and New
Testaments.
3. Three French hens stand
for faith, hope and love.
4. The four calling birds are
the four Gospels.
5. The five gold rings recall
the Hebrew Torah (Law), or
the Pentateuch, the first five
books of the Old Testament.
6. The six geese a-laying
stand for the six days of creation.
7. The seven swans a-swimming represent the
seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.
8. The eight maids a-milking are the eight
Beatitudes.
9. Nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the
Holy Spirit.
10. The ten lords a-leaping are the Ten
Commandments
11. Eleven pipers piping represent the eleven
faithful Apostles.
12. Twelve drummers drumming symbolize the
twelve points of doctrine in the Apostles Creed.
My Dad says that the most important things in life are to
KNOW the faith, LOVE the faith, LIVE the faith and
SHARE the faith – wouldn’t that be the coolest
Christmas present one can have? Gotta go and get
talking to those squirrels! Merry Christmas!

Through the mystery of the
Incarnation, God has revealed the
great depth of his love by having his
Word made flesh to dwell among us and offering his
life in expiation for our sins.
The Word was birthed into the world through Mary’s
“yes.” Christmas calls us to give our “yes” to giving to
those around us the gift that our world need the
most, that is the gift of the presence of Christ in you.
Imagine what the world would be like if we each
made the conscious decision to trust God and birth
the love of Christ into our marriage, homes, schools,
workplaces. God’s love and justice would be
experienced and more people would seek out the
Lord.
As you open and share gifts, consider how you can
share the gift of Christ with those around you.
Am I in haste to see the Lord, or is something holding
me back? Who needs the gift of you this week?
Consider bringing this to prayer.

Christmas season share the gift that really matters,

All Saints Cadette Girl Scout Troop 8414 will be sending care
packets to American Troops overseas this winter. They will be
collecting donations of items for the care packages
throughout the month of December. The girls would like to
send the packages to service people from our area. If you
know of a service person or a unit that would like to receive a
package, please contact Troop leader, Heidi Engel, at

donate a card or an item, there is a suggested list below and
there will be boxes by the school office, in the east entrance
to the Cathedral or you can contact Heidi

number of families this year and we greatly appreciate
