REFLECTIONS FOR YOUTH POISON One hot summer day Sammy, a young boy in the South, woke up early to go fishing. He stopped along his walk to the river to dig up some worms. After turning an old stump over, Sammy hit the jackpot with all the plump, squirming worms he would need. He headed down to the river. Sammy reached into the worm bucket, pulled out the biggest one, double hooked it, and dropped it into the water. He noticed a strange stinging sensation in his hand as he put the worm on the hook. BUT, before he could think about that, Sammy pulled in his first big catfish. Sammy was in the right spot but each time he put his hand into the worm bucket he felt a sting on his arm, but paid it no attention because the fishing was good! Sammy kept catching one fish after another but ignored the stinging in his hand. His hand began to feel numb and stiff but he had caught 8 large fish and wanted more! After awhile Sammy’s father came down to join him. Proudly Sammy held up his stringer of big catfish. He was pretty proud. As Sammy’s father approached he noticed his son’s arms was badly swollen to twice its size and really red. “Sammy,” his father asked, “what are you using for bait?” Sammy opened up his worm bucket and showed his father. His father turned pale as he looked into the bucket...he scooped Sammy up and headed for the hospital but Sammy was already dead. Sammy’s father discovered that his son had been fishing with baby rattlesnakes, not worms. Sammy’s deadly bait brought him a good morning of fishing but cost him his life. Had Sammy stopped fishing after the first sting, he could have been saved. But Sammy was having too much fun to bother with the pain and instead ignored it. Playing around with and not dealing with sin is just like using rattlesnakes for fishing bait. • • • Sin will take you further than you wanted to go! Sin will keep you longer than you want to stay! Sin will cost you more than you thought you would pay! WHAT ARE YOU FISHING WITH? WINDOW ON WORSHIP Today we are privileged to have a group of Unity Christian High School students leading us in worship. In baptism, we promised to receive them into Christ's church and to nurture and love them and to assist them to be Christ's faithful disciple(s). WELCOME Pastor Cal will present yet another “Bend in the Road” message tonight from Psalm 46 entitled “Putting God in Charge.” This is something hard to do and yet so necessary for us to do. When they make Profession of Faith, we welcome them to full participation in the life of the church, and to its responsibilities, its joys, and its sufferings. One of the ways youth can participate in the life of the church is by leading it in worship. It is a great joy to see the future of the church, vibrant and excited about worship.
