Our own Kentucky Wildcat!
Also known as "Mean Mary"
Mary Dee Brafford was born on
January 11, 1923, in Corbin, Kentucky.
After the birth of her three older
brothers, her father was determined to
have one of his children named after
him. Therefore, Mary was called Mary
“Dee” after her father. With three older
brothers, Mary Dee played a lot of
baseball, which she loves. She would
often umpire the baseball games in
the neighborhood.
Mary Dee obtained her two-year
teaching certificate from Cumberland
Junior College. She began teaching
grades 1-6th in Knox County,
Kentucky. She eventually finished her
four-year degree at Eastern Kentucky
in Richmond, KY.
As our own Wildcat, Mary Dee is very
proud of her Kentucky heritage. She
even has a hometown connection to
Col. Sanders of Kentucky Fried
Chicken. When she first met her
husband Ralph “Kenneth” Steely, he
was working for the Colonel at one of
his first restaurants. Kenneth was a
member of the United States Air Force,
and a Bombardier Navigator during
WWII. During their marriage, they
moved often with their two children,
Kirk and Martha. After Kenneth’s
retirement, they settled in New
Orleans. Mary Dee went back into the
class room to teach for 16 more years.
Mary Dee loved living in the Big Easy
where she was involved in numerous
Mardi Gras Parades and became an
avid New Orleans Saints fan.
