FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
‘The Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall
conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel’ (Isaiah
7:14). This well known affirmation by the prophet Isaiah
announces the coming of the Messiah into human history. It
already gives us a taste of the proximity of that marvelous,
stupendous day which will be the ‘dies natalis’ of Jesus. It was
foretold by the prophets and proclaimed throughout the whole of
Sacred Scriptures that He would be the One who would fulfill and
bring them to completion. Our God will be incarnated and born
due to the generous willingness of the ‘Virgin’ who, from the
very beginning of time, was chosen to be the Mother of the
Savior.
In all of these events we see the great mission that Mary
undertook as a privileged instrument in the hands of God. It is
thanks to her that God found His home amongst men, as she
became that first resting place of the Word: ‘Today O Mary you
became the book in which our rule is described. In you today is
written the wisdom of the Eternal Father…. O Mary, my sweetest
love, in you is written the Word, from whom we have life’s
doctrine. You are the table on which that doctrine rests. I see this
Word that is written in you, who is not without the holy desire of
the cross. Immediately that he was delivered to you, the desire of
dying for the health of men, for whom he was incarnated, was
grafted and placed in Him’ (St. Catherine of Siena, Prayers and
Elevations).
Wake up, therefore, because the birth of the Lord is
almost at hand, let us go to meet Him in His glory: to listen to
him, to love Him and to follow Him!

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN NEWS
How blessed we are to celebrate the Third Anniversary of our
new church. We are truly fortunate to have one of the most
magnificent churches in the diocese. We are proud to report that
we have paid back 82% of the parish debt. This is a wonderful
accomplishment for our parish. Bishop Ronald Gainer has
officially granted Holy Name of Jesus an extension to the Capital
Campaign for an additional two years. It is everyone’s hope that
we are successful in paying off the remaining $1.6 million debt in
that time frame. In order to do so, we need your help. If you are
continuing to fulfill your pledge or are fortunate to continue
giving beyond your pledge, please consider an annual gift this
holiday season. With your help, we hope to become a debt free
parish by our Fifth Anniversary.
SEVEN DEADLY SINS, SEVEN LIVELY VIRTUES - Please
join us for our next adult study, Father Robert Barron’s Seven
Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues. This engaging presentation
concerns the Seven Deadly Sins, those great spiritual blocks that
inhibit our flourishing in relationship with God and one another.
Based on Dante’s writings, the seven deadly sins correspond to
the seven stories of Dante’s Mt. Purgatory. Pride, envy, anger,
sloth, gluttony, avarice and lust are all presented as patterns of
dysfunction within us that lead to unhappiness. Father Barron
shows us how to counteract these seven sinful patterns through a
conscious process of opposition, which are the Seven Lively
Virtues. The Seven Lively Virtues offer antidotes to each sin and
help set us on the right path to healing and happiness. This 4week study will begin on Wednesday, January 7, at 6:30 p.m. in
the Former Church. To register or for more information, please
contact Ann Marie Segilia at 939-1469 or [email protected]
or Mary Ridder at 545-6819 or [email protected].
STANDING IN CHURCH - On rare occasions even our new
church can see all of the available seating used. However, it is not
unusual to see folks standing across the back of the church during
some Masses. I write to ask your consideration, especially for
families. To have your children stand throughout the entire Mass,
without access to missalettes, hymnals, or sheets to aid with the
new prayers means that your children will have little or no
opportunity to actively participate in Mass. It will not be
surprising later to find them eager to absent themselves from
Mass, since it means so little to them. What have you really
taught them about the great privilege we have to honor Our Lord
through the prayers of the Mass and to receive Him in Holy
Communion?

Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life
O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to
pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical
counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for
these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of
inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to
make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you.
Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and
daughters who, having found the pearl of great price,
treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns
with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for
ever and ever. Amen.

BISHOP MCDEVITT HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT TEST
- The Bishop McDevitt High School Placement Test (HSPT) is
scheduled for Saturday, January 10 or January 24 at 8:00 a.m. at
Bishop McDevitt High School (1 Crusader Way,
Harrisburg). Eighth grade students interested in attending Bishop
McDevitt must choose from either date. All incoming 8th graders
are required to take this test. It is a standardized, nationally
normed test. Using this type of assessment allows Bishop
McDevitt to see how 8th graders perform compared to their peers
as well as nationally. We are also able to provide parents with a
detailed performance profile specific to their child’s results. The
performance profile is a detailed portrait of your child’s strengths
and weaknesses. The test is not pass/fail. It will not keep a student
out of McDevitt if performance is low. On the contrary, it is used
to begin the process of understanding and gauging where each
child fits best within our high school curriculum. This test does
not measure minimal benchmarks, but rather the student’s
potential to learn, similar to the SAT. We understand the HSPT is
only one part of your child’s story when considering academic
placement. Please visit our website, www.bishopmcdevitt.org,
under “Admissions” for more information and the HSPT
Registration form. Registration forms for the January 10 testing
date are due no later than January 7. Registration forms for the
January 24 testing date are due no later than January 16. A $30
testing fee is required with the registration form. Please contact
Mrs. Jill Hanes, Director of Admissions, with any questions at
236-7973 ext. 2132 or [email protected].
ADULT EDUCATION COURSES OFFERED - Diocesan
Institute 2015 Winter/Spring Course listings are now available. If
