THE AUTUMN SHOW.
The total profit was £1,874.55 of which £1,500 will be divided with a £500 share going to St George and All Saints,
the Church Bells restoration fund and the Village Hall. The remaining sum will be set aside for the intended 2015
Show.
The Ivor Bourne Cup, for the best overall contribution to all the events of the Show, was awarded to Beaford Primary
School. They did a splendid job with their contribution of decorative bells for the Church Flower Festival, they
entered with enthusiasm into the Scarecrow competition, their entries on show day , as individuals and as school
groups, were of an exceedingly high standard. But the School Choir stole the show on the day, for which the
committee thank the children, their teachers and hope they will join in again in 2015.
There will be a meeting in The Globe Inn, Beaford, on the evening of 21st January 2015 to start planning for next
year’s show. Would be committee members and any others with ideas and suggestions for the event are welcome
to attend.
The 2015 Beaford calendar, featuring village scenes from the photographic competition, is now on sale for £5.00 at
Beaford Garage and The Globe Inn.

WOMENS INSTITUTE
The speaker, Mrs Wendy Porter, and members were welcomed to the November meeting by, the president, Mrs
Lorna Hutchings.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read, agreed and signed, followed by the treasurer‘s report on the
current finances. It was confirmed that the programme for 2015 had been finalised and would be distributed to
members at the December meeting. Details of future social events and courses were discussed.
The walking group had enjoyed a walk on the Tarka trail with a lunch at the Royal Hotel, Bideford.
Volunteers were called for to help set up the stall on the morning of the Christmas Fayre on 6th December.
The president then called on the speaker, Mrs Wendy Porter, who provided the necessary materials to make a
festive Christmas Bag. This was a most enjoyable and fun-filled afternoon with everyone pleased with their efforts.
At the end of the meeting the president thanked the speaker for such a pleasant and productive way to spend a few
hours. Everyone agreed that it had been a lovely afternoon.

ENJOY FEEDING THE BIRDS?
We seem to be in a hotspot at the moment for a serious wild bird disease known as Trichomoniasis. Greenfinches
are particularly vulnerable but chaffinches, goldfinches and bullfinches can succumb. You can easily spot the
spends a lot of time sitting on the feeder and is reluctant to fly off if approached. Healthy birds can appear fluffed
up during very cold weather but a sick bird is like this all the time. If you look closely you can often observe dirt
and seed husks adhering to the beak. This disease is passed to other birds using the same feeder, is very
contagious and fatal to the birds. It is estimated that the greenfinch population in the UK has recently been
reduced by a third due to Trichomoniasis.
To stop the disease spreading, keep your feeders clean and also the ground beneath them as much as possible. If
you want to clean your feeders, thoroughly immerse them in a 10% solution of household bleach in water. This
could be done once a month if the disease is present. It is important that as many people as possible, who feed the
birds, help to stop the disease spreading as it is easily passed from garden to garden. If you have sick birds present,
by far the best way to clear the disease is to remove all feeders for 3 weeks. This may seem hard but it will save a
lot of avian lives. Once feeding is stopped any disease present on the ground will not survive outside a bird for more
than 3 days.

DID YOU KNOW
An effective speed limit of 25 mph is to be applied for conventional tractorsModern tractors are designed to safely
travel at speeds of up to, or over 25 mph, but current regulations restrict their speed to 20 mph, lower than many
other EU countries. We are therefore unnecessarily restricting our farmers, adding time and cost on to their
operations.
Those tractors allowed to exceed 25 mph will continue to be subject to tighter design and regulatory requirements.
