Introduction
Diamond Dallas Page is no stranger to success. As a former professional
wrestler and WCW heavyweight champion, he is used to experiencing victory
in the spotlight. But when he developed his DDP Yoga fitness system for
his own rehabilitation, he had no idea how successful his program would
become in helping athletes and non-athletes alike. Boosted in popularity by
a viral video featuring the transformation of disabled Gulf War veteran Arthur
Boorman, demand for Page’s DDP Yoga program skyrocketed. However,
with this demand came increased pressure on the company’s website and its
underlying infrastructure.
When DDP Yoga was invited to participate in ABC’s The Shark Tank, the
company knew that the increased visibility from the show would spike
demand for DDP Yoga’s fitness system beyond its current capacity.
Challenge
While they didn’t accept the deal offered by the sharks on Shark Tank, Dallas
Page and his business partner Steve Yu knew that the “Shark Tank Effect,”
the massive traffic explosion a small business’ site sees from a Shark Tank
appearance, could have a tremendous impact on their business – and their
infrastructure.
They needed a solution that could help them maintain uptime during the
onslaught of website traffic during and immediately following the show as
well as keep pace with the elevated demand that has remained since the
appearance. As a small business dedicated to their customers’ success,
DDP Yoga could not afford to have the website unavailable because of
planned or unplanned downtime. In a hurry for a fast and simple solution,

Solution
Within 24 hours, ScaleArc and Rackspace architected and deployed
a solution that addressed the anticipated increase in web traffic. The
Rackspace team put together a web architecture with 25 8GB Rackspace
Performance Cloud Servers and a database architecture with four 8GB
Performance Cloud Servers and two 30GB Performance Cloud Servers.
ScaleArc provided its database load balancing software to ensure the
company’s MySQL database could handle the increased traffic flow. The
ScaleArc software inserts transparently between the database and web
applications creating an abstraction layer that enables an agile data tier. As
a result, the software automatically manages SQL traffic flows as needed to
ensure continuous availability of DDP Yoga’s website.

During and immediately following the Shark Tank airing, DDP Yoga saw its
site traffic balloon almost 1000 percent. By the day after the airing, traffic
had exceeded more than 500x the average to 3,000 percent. DDP Yoga also
enjoyed a major boost in sales – they grew roughly 2,000 percent to 20x
higher than average. A week after the show, sales were still up about 400
percent.
