ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University was
established in 1986 at historic town Patan, also famous
for Step well (Rani ni vav) and ‘Patola’. The
geographical jurisdiction of the North Gujarat
University encompasses five districts-Mehsana, Patan,
Banaskantha, Aravalli and Sabarkantha.
HNGU provide most of the modern infrastructure in
region of higher studies with all major Departments
having their own building and facilities. At present
HNGU have more than 270 affiliated colleges and more
than 15 departments functioning under it. HNGU
situated on the posh university road locality in Patan is
spread across approximately 290 acres of land and all
department connected by road. The NATIONAL
ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDIATION COUNCIL awarded B
grade with 2.55 CGPA.
species in one database system, which is web-based
and freely available for any researchers who are
interested in species identification.
The capacity of animal DNA barcoding to identify
species is an important advantage in the effort to
explore the Indian mega-diversity and documenting its
genetic information. DNA barcoding also holds great
promise to enable the forest product traceability, thus
the authorities can avoid illegally traded animals or
plants and their derivatives. With respect to animals
including fishes, DNA barcoding has been noted
capable to identify morphologically similar species, in
order to prevent the illegal trade of species protected
under the Convention on International Trade in
Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

ABOUT DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
Biotechnology is set to revolutionize human life and
the society. It is one among the most dynamic areas of
science and engineering today, which represents a
synthesis of evolving technologies that will propel the
industries towards sustainable development.
Department of Biotechnology established in 2004 2005, has a place of pride amongst department
affiliated to HNGU, Patan. Department occupied with
all basic facility in laboratory as well as in classrooms.
Department of biotechnology offer M. Sc. in
Biotechnology, M. Phil. and Ph.D. in Biotechnology
programme with lowest course fee in Gujarat. The
thrust area of research activity in department is DNA
barcoding of animals, plants and fungi, plant response
against salinity, plant and pathogen interaction, animal
biotechnology, proteomics etc.
ABOUT SEMINAR
DNA barcoding is a short sequence (<800 bp) DNA
taken from genome used for identifying species.
Species identification using molecular data is a new
concept which provides a fast, accurate and accessible
species identification system. The basic work of DNA
barcoding is to store the DNA sequences of identified


OBJECTIVES
Distribute basic knowledge and updated
information about animal DNA Barcoding
Provide a forum for discussion on the
implementation of animal DNA Barcoding
Stimulate the interest of university students in
DNA Barcoding especially in animal species.
HOW TO REACH PATAN
Patan is well connected by road from all major cities of
Gujarat. Nearest Airport is Ahmedabad Airport (110
km). Nearest Railway station is mahesana (50 km).
State transport bus (GSRTC) service is easily available
from Ahmedabad and Mehsana.
Who should participate?
