PASTOR’S COMMENTS….
This Fourth Sunday of Advent raises before
our eyes the promise of a Davidic Kingdom that
would never end. As God said to David: “I
will raise up your heir after you, sprung
from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. I will be a father to him, and he
shall be a son to me. Your house and your
kingdom shall endure forever before me;
your throne shall stand firm forever.”
This promise to David by God of
this kingdom set up so many hopes and expectation for the future. Their hopes, however, were quickly dashed when the Jewish
people lost their land and their position of
power and were driven into exile. Throughout their
many years of exile they did not lose hope in God’s
promise. As Jerusalem, with its Temple, was rebuilt, their expectation once again grew strong.
It was into this spirit of expectation that the
angel Gabriel spoke to a young virgin in Nazareth and
proclaimed: “Behold, you will conceive in your womb
and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will
be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and
the Lord God will give him the throne of David his
father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever
and of his kingdom there will be no end.” It took
Mary’s yes – “May it be done to me according to your
word” – to allow this promise made a thousand years
earlier to be set in motion toward its ultimate fulfillment.
Who could have ever imagined that when God
said, concerning the promised heir to David, “I will be
a father to him, and he shall be a son to me” that an
angel would say to Mary: “The Holy Spirit will come
upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be
called holy, the Son of God.”
This is the great mystery that we have been
invited to participate in as we both recall the historical
birth of the Savior and we allow the example of Mary
to inspire us to say our “Yes” to the divine invitation
to permit God’s Kingdom to come through each of us.
This week we celebrate the beautiful Nativity
of the Lord. There is so much that is familiar, warm,
and uplifting during this Season – the decorations, the
carols, the crèche, the Giving Tree, the exchange of
gifts, the reconnecting through cards, the family gatherings. It is also a time to give thanks for all the ways
that those around us give birth to Christ and his love
and goodness through their generosity and service. I
want to extend a thank you to all those who serve our
parish in so many seen and unseen ways. I
also want to thank all our parishioners for
their faithful presence at and support of our
parish, as well as for bringing the message
and presence of the “Word made flesh” to
our neighborhood. On behalf of our parish
staff – Deacon Richard, Chrissy, Eileen and
Peter – I wish all of you a blessed and joyous
Christmas Day and Season. May we all continue to become and live as the Body of
Christ for our families and our neighborhood!
