The hard work, sacrifices and study really paid off for you all. One of the pleasing aspects of the results is that students who received a score of 90 or above increased from 6.6% in 2013 to 9.1% in 2014. This is fantastic news. I am very proud of the efforts and achievements of all our students. Now you can all take a deep breath and start planning the next step towards your chosen careers. If you are at all concerned about your results and VTAC selections, please contact Ms Kurrle in Careers for advice. 1 PARENT BULLETIN 12th December 2014 Principal’s Report cont... Awards evenings We recently held our Junior School and Middle/Senior School Awards evenings, which were both a great success. Our guest speaker, Chris Dyer, ex-student of Gladstone Park and good mate of Cameron Baird, gave a heartfelt speech about his time at Gladstone Park. It was lovely to see Mr Lamb return to present the Robert Lamb Award for Contribution to the College to Aida Zepcan. Our inaugural Cameron Baird Memorial Award was presented by Warrant Officer Robert Drew to Nathan Barry. Nathan was very proud to accept this great honour. Many prestigious awards were presented to our students, but the highlight is always finding out who the Dux of each year level are. These are students who achieved the highest scores in their year level. Congratulations to the following Duces: Year 7 – Taylor McNeil Year 8 – Allison Rogers Year 9 – Jordan Brebner Year 10 – Okan Ozer Year 11 – Bianca Roberts For those of you who missed out on an award, I challenge you to do your best with an aim to achieving an award next year. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday break. Students firstly completed a walking tour of Lygon Street, which included visiting the iconic “Brunetti” pasticceria and “Piazza Italia” in Argyle Square. Next, students enjoyed a lunch at “La cacciatora” restaurant which serves “pizza a metro” (Pizza by the metre). Many students enjoyed “un gelato” after lunch from one of the “gelataria” on Lygon Street. A big thank you to Ms Morales, Ms Kowalyk, Ms Sellitti, Mr Tosi and Mr Balestra who supervised students on the excursion. 7 PARENT BULLETIN 12th December 2014 Year 8E Geography 8E Volcanologists! 8E students have been learning about the natural disasters as part of their Geography studies. Australia experiences a range of 'natural disasters' including bushfires, floods, severe storms, earthquakes and landslides. These events cause great financial hardship for individuals and communities, and can result in loss of life. Although, Australia is relatively safe from damage and destruction of major volcanoes, to understand the various types of volcanic landforms, 8E students worked in pairs to create paper mâché volcano models! The eruptions were conducted in their science class where students also had the opportunity to learn about acid-base reactions. These lessons have been messy but fun! For a holiday project, try building your own volcano at home! Ms Li 8 PARENT BULLETIN 12th December 2014 8E Volcanologists! What you will need? Volcano Cardboard (for the base) Chicken wire (to mould the volcano) Empty bottle (for the magma chamber) Masking tape Water, flour, salt (paper mâché glue) Newspaper (torn to strips) Paint Lava Bicarbonate soda Red and yellow food colouring White vinegar Directions Using the masking tape, secure the empty bottle to the centre of the cardboard base. Carefully, wearing gloves, use the chicken wire to mould the shape of the volcano around the bottle (leaving the top of the bottle open). Mix your paper mâché glue mixture – equal parts water and flour and a pinch of salt to prevent your volcano from going mouldy! Dip each strip of newspaper into the paper mâché glue and cover the chicken wire. Repeat this process until you have a thick shell. Let it dry overnight. Paint! Let it dry overnight. Working outside, fill the bottle half way with bicarbonate soda (you may need a funnel). Mix a few drops of food colouring with a cup of vinegar. Pour the vinegar in the volcano and watch it erupt! 9 PARENT BULLETIN 12th December 2014 Year 12 Career Agenda – 2014/15 Monday 22/12/14 VTAC Change of Preference close 2pm Monday 19/01/15 Round 1 VTAC offers online Holidays and Technology Gladstone Park Secondary College is an eSmart school. eSmart is a program run by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation that provides resources and knowledge to create a school culture that embraces the positives of the ever-changing cyber -world.
