The dreaded flu season! Here are a few tips to keep you healthy. Influenza is spread by respiratory droplets from close contact with infected persons or contact with contaminated surfaces or objects. Infection can occur when influenza viruses contact the eyes, mouth, or nose, and possibly through inhaling droplets from a sneeze or cough. Infected adults may be able to spread the virus to others about one day before they develop symptoms and up to five days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to spread the flu to someone else before you even know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Flu Symptons: Fever, Chills, Headache, Cough, Sore throat, muscle aches. Symptoms usually start about 14 days after being exposed and last 2-7 days. Influenza is usually treated with fever reducers, throat or cough drops, water, and plenty of rest. If the diagnosis is made at the very beginning of the illness, a doctor may prescribe antiviral medication. The best protection is to get a flu shot every year before the flu season starts. Since influenza viruses change over time, it is important to get a shot each year. Each year the vaccine is remade to include the types of flu virus expected to cause illness during that flu season. The vaccine begins to protect you within a few days after vaccination, but the vaccine is not fully effective until about 14 days after vaccination. Good respiratory hygiene is important to prevent the spread of ALL respiratory infections, including influenza. Use your elbow or upper arm, instead of your hands, or a tissue to cover your mouth and nose or when you cough or sneeze. Immediately throw used tissues into the wastebasket. To clean your hands after coughing or sneezing, wash with soap and water, or clean with alcohol-based hand cleaner if water is not available. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you get influenza, stay home from work, school, and social gatherings. This will help prevent others from catching your illness and gives your body the rest it needs to recover. Try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Many diseases often spread this way. For additional information on influenza, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Web site at:http://www.cdc.gov/flu/. January 2015 Hi-Yo, Silver! The call of “Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!” first echoed on Detroit’s WXYZ radio station on January 30, 1933. A mysterious masked cowboy known as the Lone Ranger went on to become one of the most famous and influential western heroes of the 20th century and beyond. WXYZ station owner George Trendle and writer Fran Striker co-developed the idea of The Lone Ranger, yet neither of them had any experience with cowboys or the Wild West. To them, this hardly mattered. After seeing the success of the movie The Mask of Zorro, they wanted to develop an American version of a masked swashbuckler. Furthermore, they wanted their hero to set an example of good morals and to stand for truth, justice, and freedom. The show was an instant success and eventually drew an audience of 20 million faithful listeners three times a week. The writers did not worry about historical accuracy. This was perhaps most evident in the character of Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s faithful Native American sidekick, who uttered simple phrases and groans. During early episodes, the Lone Ranger was often stuck talking to his horse, Silver. The writers realized they needed a second character, so they introduced Tonto on February 25, 1933. Like the Lone Ranger, Tonto was also a model of justice and truth, and often provided the brains of the duo. By the 1950s, The Lone Ranger had moved to film and television, and starred Clayton Moore as the masked hero. The western craze hit full stride, and a string of hit shows followed: The Roy Rogers Show, The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Maverick, and Rawhide. Some argue that the western declined with the Red Scare, the Space Race, and the Cold War. Yet others contend that westerns never went out of style. The Lone Ranger struck gold in 1933, and westerns have been treasured ever since. Customer Service Superstar Andrea Crosley has been chosen as the January 2015 Customer Service Superstar!
