Information sheet for visitors
In the following you will find information on the flu and how you can protect yourself against it.
Influenza (flu): viral disease; influenza A + B
Symptoms
 sudden, abrupt onset of the disease
 high fever (over 38° Celsius)
 muscle or limb pain, tiredness and exhaustion, headache,
dry cough
 possibly diarrhoea, vomiting
Treatment
Symptomatic treatment and bed rest often suffice. Antiviral therapy is available for high-risk
patients and in serious cases.
Sick people should avoid contact with other people during the acute stage of the disease.
Infection
Influenza viruses are transmitted by breathing, coughing or sneezing via droplets of saliva.
Transmission is also possible via contaminated surfaces or via hands.
Incubation period: 1 to 3 days
Duration of infectiousness: transmission is already possible before symptoms appear. Adults can
transmit influenza up to 5 days, children up to 7 days after the first symptoms appear.
Precautionary measures
Only vaccinated people should visit people suffering from the flu.
Visits to acutely ill people should be made only if protective measures are taken, the staff at the
hospital will show you the necessary measures.

 disposable medical gown
 hand hygiene/hand disinfection
Prevention: annual flu vaccination
Fundamental hygiene measures during the flu season: frequent ventilation, regular hand
washing
