A-MMS Lady Jets get season’s first win over St. Pat’s The Altoona-Midway Middle School Lady Jets basketball team hosted the St. Pats’ Saints Thursday, posting their first win of the season, 22-15. The Lady Jets led each quarter the entire game, shutting down the Saints’ defense. The Lady Jets were able to put many points on the board from the inside block. Michala Kinzle led the Jets with 11 points, followed by Anna Pierce with seven; and Abigale Reaves with four. The Lady Jets played well, closing out the 2014 semester on a high note and are looking forward to 2015 and the remainder of the season. The A-MMS got off to a slow start against the Saints, falling behind 31-11 by half, but their defense picked up the second half allowing only 12 points. The Jets fell to St. Pats by a score of 22-43. The boys will enjoy a short break during the Christmas break but will be back to work during the winter open gym sessions starting on Dec. 29. The first game saw the seventh-grade evenly matched. In the first half, the score was tied at the end of the first quarter and the ‘Jackets trailing by a point at the end of the second. Some defensive breakdowns and not screening out allowed the Wolves to build a fivepoint margin at the end of the third quarter, 26-21. In the final quarter, FMS caught fire, getting several easy baskets while holding Galesburg to two free throws defensively. The boys were able to pull away and take a 35-28 win. Leading rebounders were Grayson Coulter, Ty Ivy and Sheldon Shaw. Leading scorer was Cooper Odell with 13 points, followed by Coulter with eight points; Isaac Couch seven; Ivey, four; and Shaw, three. The seventh-grade boys are 2-2. The eighth-grade ‘Jackets slowly fell behind during the A WORD FROM THE WORD For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. — LUKE 2:11 Jesus came to be our savior. Most people don’t even know that they need saved. They think that the are alright just the way they are. I guess they don’t need Jesus. But for those who recognize that they are lost, and always have been, these are the greatest words in all of history. Fredonia committed 24 turnovers while the ‘Cats coughed up the ball 20 times. “Offensively, we finally got something going in the second half,” Casteel said. “We have struggled against pressure man defense but we may have turned the corner in this game. We got better movement in the second half and did a much better job of both setting and using screens. As a result, we started looking to score instead of looking to survive.” The ‘Jacket girls put up a good fight in the second half against the deep Burlington bench, trailing by just five total points, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome. “I thought the girls kept fighting back,” Casteel said. “They didn’t back off. I think that is the best thing that came out of this one. The early returns of Tri-Valley League teams show that there won’t be any easy games the rest of the way. Every night is going to be a battle.” Malorrie Kukovich and Dakota Corle combined for the bulk of Fredonia’s points, scoring 13 apiece. Wildcat Malory Wagner led all shooters with 17 points, the only Burlington player in double figures, but 11 players contributed to the score. As the season breaks for the holidays, Caney Valley’s Lady Bullpups top the TVL list with a 3-0 record. Cherryvale and Erie are tied at 4-1 while Humboldt is 4-2. Eureka comes in at .500 with a 3-3 early mark and Fredonia is 2-3 while Burlington is 2-4. Neodesha and Yates Center are both 1-4. TVL play begins at the end of January. Fredonia’s first game after the break will be Jan. 2 at home with visiting Cherryvale. A better third quarter defensively didn’t allow the Wolves to increase their lead but in the final quarter the Wolves held on to the margin to take a 40-24 win. James Wright, Jaden Schmidt and Bryar Hebb led the ‘Jackets in rebounding. Kory Chestnut paced FMS with seven points; Anthony Meloy, five; Schmidt four; and Isaac Jennings, Quentin DeBord, Wright and Hebb, two each. The eighth-grade boys are 1-3 at the Christmas break.
