Our Invisible Destination
Beloved Church, as I write these words, we are in the days before
Christmas…it is hard to write about the New Year of 2015 when we have
yet to arrive. So I turn to the poets.
One of my favorite contemporary poets is the late John O’Donohue
from Ireland. In his wonderful poem, At the End of the Year there are two
stanzas that I’d like to share with you.
…As this year draws to its end,
We give thanks for the gifts it brought
and how they became inlaid within
where neither time nor tide can touch them….
…We bless this year for all we learned,
for all we loved and lost
and for the quiet way it brought us
nearer to our invisible destination.
I think of all that 2014 must have inlaid within us all. What a full year it has
been...hospitals, births, deaths, new jobs, jobs ending, illness, healing, new
friends and families, new traditions, much mission work, The Nanette Todd
Kids Camp, financial challenges and financial blessings. This list goes on
and on. We are changed because of this past year. We stand in gratitude for
the grace and mercy that have steeped our days as we consciously move forward toward our “invisible destination”.
As we enter 2015, I invite you to walk in your faith more deeply. Take a
new study. Stretch your routines. Step out in faith as we all move toward
the “invisible destination” that calls us.
See you in church, Ellen
