Parish Website: sacredheartgi.org December 21, 2014 Page 3 CHRISTMAS Reading the opening verses of the Gospel of John from the Mass During the Day, it is clear that John holds the Incarna!on to be very significant. His Gospel does not begin with the birth story of Jesus. There is no men!on of Bethlehem, of Mary, of Shepherds, or the stable and manger. So, why do we read this Gospel for Christmas Day? The Bethlehem story is told in the readings during the Mass During the Night and the Mass at Dawn. But on Christmas Day, we reflect on the deeper meaning about the birth of a !ny, helpless, vulnerable baby called Jesus. Jesus is the Word of God. He is the Incarnate Logos or Word who reveals God the Father to us. The opening words of the Gospel are the same in the Old Testament Book of Genesis “In the beginning…” Genesis is speaking about the beginning of the created universe, but John’s Gospel goes back to the infinite God himself where we find the Word (Jesus) already exis!ng. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things came through him…” John describes Jesus as God’s crea!ve, lifegiving Word that now has come to earth in human form. “What he was (God), he remained and what he was not (human) he assumed” (From an early Church an!phon for morning prayer). “And the Word became flesh” (John 1:14) The Word took on human nature in all its fullness. He became like us in all things, except sin. And he lived among us. The Greek term literally means “he pitched his tent.” In the Old Testament God was believed to be present to his people in the Mee!ng Tent. The Word in his humanity is the new presence of God among us. Jesus Christ is truly the Son of God who, without ceasing to be God, became man. From the !me of the Apostles the Chris!an faith believes in the Incarna!on of God’s Son “who has come in the flesh” (1 John 4-2). Gregory of Nyssa, one of the great early Church Fathers (330-395 AD) wrote: Sick, our nature demanded to be healed; fallen, to be raised up; dead to rise again. We had lost the possession of the good; it was necessary for it to be given back to us. Closed in darkness, it was necessary to bring us light; cap!ves, we await a Savior; prisoners help; slaves, a liberator. Are these things minor or insignificant? Did they not move God to descend to human nature and visit it, since humanity was in so miserable state? Chris!ans never cease proclaiming anew the wonder of the Incarna!on. The Son of God assumed a human nature in order to accomplish our salva!on in it. The Son of God worked with human hands; he thought with a human mind. He acted with a human will. And with a human heart he loved. Born of the Virgin Mary, he has been truly made one of us, like to us in all things except sin (Gaudium et Spes, Document from Va!can II). May you experience many blessings of joy and peace during the Christmas season. Sr. Helen Therese, OSF The Sacred Heart Staff wishes all of you a Wonderful Christmas! With tiny light like heaven’s stars reflecting in the snow. The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away the tear, For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here. For I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring. For it is beyond description to hear an Angel sings. I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart. But I am not so far away, we are not really apart. So be happy for me dear ones, you know I hold you dear, And be glad I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above, I send you each a memory of my undying love. For all “love” is a gift, more precious than pure gold. It was always most important in the stories Jesus told. So please love and help each other as my Father said to do For I cannot count the blessings, or love He has for you. Please have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear, For I am spending Christmas, with Jesus Christ this year. I can’t tell you of the splendor or the peace here inside this place Can you just imagine Christmas with our Savior face to face. I’ll ask Him to lift your spirit as I tell him of your love. So then pray for one another as you lift your eyes above. Please let you heart be joyful and let your spirits sing. For I am spending Christmas in Heaven and I am walking with the King.
