Suitable for beef and dairy cattle where bloat is a risk To ensure a steady intake, place new replacement blocks before the old ones are finished. Cattle not accustomed to blocks should be trained onto blocks by pouring molasses on top of the block. BLOAT Legume bloat occurs when cattle consume highly digestible bloat prone legumes. The soluble leaf proteins in bloated legumes produce a very stable foam which prevents the opening of the valve which normally releases the gas, so gases build up in the rumen. Legume bloat can also occur with cattle consuming Lucerne hay, but is less likely to be acute. Burping of rumen gas occurs best when cattle that are down are sitting on their sternum. Alcohol ethoxylate 12A23 breaks down the stable foam allowing the rumen to burp the gas.
